You just finished Book One in a trilogy. It's only 9:30pm, you can read for another hour or so before bedtime. If you are reading on a an e-reader, you can be reading Book Two in about 90 seconds. If not, well, good luck finding a bookstore open at 9:30pm.
Do you know music artists? I am one, and I know a lot of them. I don't know any who think they "automatically deserve to be paid for producing their music". Most are thrilled when they can make a living from their music, but none expect to. Most musicians I know make WAY more money from shows and t-shirt sales than from CD or MP3 sales.
In fact, many, like myself, give the music away for free (I license it under the Creative Commons) in order to get more fans, so to have more people at shows and sell more merch.
he said "your OS options are ancient XP Home or the horrible under-performer Windows 7 Starter."
you said "I am running Windows 7 Professional on an Acer Aspire One, and it runs beautifully. No under-performing here at all."
but he was referring to Windows 7 Starter as a under-performer, not Professional.
So then I thought you were making the point that Windows 7 Professional WAS available, not just XP or 7 Starter, but then you said "that model is no longer available"
ProTools runs on 10.6 now. (but only ProTools 8. I assume he has an older version)
But couldn't he wipe drive and install 10.5 from an install disk? My "10.6" macbook pro came with 10.5 installed and a 10.6 disk in the box.
Someone who runs ProTools on a Mac can harldy complain about lock in - both Apple and Digidesign are masters of lock in. "You WILL use the hardware my companay sells, and only that hardware!"

Vimeo kicks youtube's butt for audio/video quality and ease of use. They just require you to have actually made the content you are uploading, no TV show rips, etc. I think think this is a great policy.
Do you seriously think that GM is struggling because they are making products no one wants?
Well, I can only speak for myself. I live in the USA, I've bought 4 cars in my lifetime (1 used, 3 new): 1 Toyota, 1 Honda, 2 Volkswagon.
GM certainly has no products that *I* want. And neither does Ford or any other American car company.
Give me a nice car at a nice price with good gas mileage and good reliability. American car companies cannot seem to do all of those things in the same car. Why can Honda seem to do all 4 in almost every car?
I loved those John Christopher books when I was a kid.
That was the first thing I thought about when I saw this story.
Thanks for the wiki link. I had no idea there was a TV show and a comic book.

It's still the parent's responsibility.

I was in grade school in the early 80's. I went to a good public school. My parents were both teachers and chose to live in that neighborhood because of the school district. Even then, the gifted program was just OK. My parents had me in several after-school classes and activities to bolster the schools shortcomings.
It still comes down to parents doing actual parenting. If you've got a gifted child, you have to know they are only going to get so much from their school.
I was lucky. My parents knew what they were doing. They let me explore my interests without pushing. They had me in a creative writing class. They got me into science competitions. The best thing they did was buy a computer for the house. This was a TRS-80 in 1982. It was a stretch for the household budget, but messing with that taught me more than anything else.
Please don't start mining Bitcoin. You will not turn a profit. It's hard work. It's no fun. Don't do it.
(the difficulty is high enough, we don't need another influx of miners)
Bitcoin is the PERFECT Slashdot topic:
Open Source
Peer to peer
Cryptography
Computer Hardware
Libertarian
THAT'S why it shows up so much. What's not to like?
I seriously LOLed
To me, the HUGE advantage of an e-reader is this:

it was 1996. He had Wifi built into his laptop? Even if what you say was the case, he STILL couldn't get onto the alien network. Worst scene ever.
WHoosh!
Anyone who does pro or semi-pro level audio or video production uses it. I use it to connect to my video camera and my audio interface.
Most of your time in the game involves long periods of waiting
sounds like a great game.
You can start by supporting my band, all our stuff is CC licensed. Take a listen, rock / punk : http://theexperiments.com/
Thanks, and enjoy!
I assume it's from "Pirate Radio". They are "pirate" because they don't have a license or permit to be a real ISP.

Get my music for free at http://theexperiments.com/
Making music is a labor of love, and anyone who does it expecting to get rich is an idiot.
Dude, you are awesome. You just made my day.
These morons want to prevent ME from releasing MY OWN SONGS under the Creative Commons?
It's idiot moves like this that led to do exactly that. Here: http://theexperiments.com/ All my band's music for free under the Creative Commons.
They can pry the Creative Commons from my cold dead fingers.
You prove his point.

So you're just agreeing with him then?
This is now my preferred browser on the iPad.
But if one of the kids mouths off ONE MORE TIME, father microbe is turning that asteroid car right around, and they are. GOING. HOME.
No carrier subsidy = $571 (Amazon.com). THAT's why no one has it.
Half of me thinks this is just them screaming "LOOK WE DON'T HAVE A PAYWALL ANYMORE". That is, assuming they actually don't.
Did you even read the summary? Forget the article, I know you didn't read that. Just the summary. The guy does not not work for Salon.com any more.
"..interesting retrospective by Scott Rosenberg, former managing editor of Salon.com"
It's not "them". It's just some guy that used to work there.

Art is crap and art that makes a statement is double crap.
Are the games fun? Then I will play them. Not fun? Then I won't.
Recently, literal art crap got loose and took down some power lines. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1047578/Giant-inflatable-dog-mess-breaks-free-moorings-brings-power-line.html
Once again, /. is right there, breaking news, reprinting from Digg 3 weeks late.
Seriously, this is a month old. I gave him $10 back in July.
This got fixed recently, after user complaints:
