Hareware isn't a profitable business unless you are Cisco, 3Com, HP, Sun, or Compaq.
You may be wrong. I spoke with Linksys engineer resently, and he told me that they are doing rather well, revenues are up and they don't lay people off. (Linksys is a private company, so their complete financials are not available). They target consumer market and thus have not been hit by downturn.
You had to look at SATA specs before complaining.
They describe a single large connector, supplying both data and power to the drive. It is up to motherboard manufactures to use it.
11Mbps is a "marketing number". The protocol has a lot of overhead- data that is transmitted for servicing the connection. When it comes to speed 802.11B is moving your data (payload), it is about 3-4 MBps, shared between two directions.
Be prepared to return the laptop for full refund
This laptop (P-1000) is the smallest on US market and has a touchsceen. I like it and don't want to return it
Be sure you have re-partitioned the hard drive before you return it. Ask them to demonstrate the OS recovery for you.
They told me that they will replace HD under warranty in this case. As for OS backups, they recommended to buy a full version of DriveImage for this purpose. It will allow to backup the recovery partition to other media. Not only this method sucks, but I have to pay for additional software!
Also be sure to call the Microsoft Piracy Hotline and carefully explain that you got a new laptop without the Media. Accuse the seller of stealing your recovery CD's.
I did this. MS agreed, but didn't take any action. Fujitsu said "It is our policy"
I bought a Fujitsu laptop earlier this year, and it didn't come with XP media at all. Not even a recovery disk! They only provide a recovery partition on a hard drive, effectivly stealing more then 1GB of space. I spent a lot of time on a phone with them, discussing various scenarios involving HD failure and upgrade, but to no avail. I even called Microsoft, and they confirmed that if I paid for the license, I am intiteld to the media. But Fujitsu simply said "No CD for you. It is our policy". Really, what can you do when a corporation just tells you to get lost? Nothing. Same with the refunds. They simply will not do it.
I think it is time to realize that lawyers are humans like you and me. Some are assholes and some are hard-working honest people.
I agree with this statement. 98% of sleazy lawyers make the whole profession look bad!
Verizon has a fuel cell backup system for a whole Central Office, this is 1.4MW!
UTC Fuel Cells announced the sale of seven PC25TM fuel cell power plants to Verizon to provide primary power for a critical call-routing center on Long Island, New York.
The seven units, which each produce 200 kilowatts of electricity and 900,000 Btus of usable heat, will form the largest fuel cell installation in the world, surpassing the PC25 installation at the Connecticut Juvenile Training Center in Middletown, Conn.
Verizon will install the units at a 332,000 square-foot facility in Garden City that delivers local phone service to some 40,000 Verizon customers on a 24-hour basis. The facility is also home to more than 1,000 employees who handle various functions, including answering customer calls.
The fuel cells, which together will generate 1.4 megawatts of electricity, will provide primary electrical power for the facility. Verizon also plans to install four natural gas powered generators to operate in parallel with the fuel cells as a hybrid system that can generate up to 4.4 megawatts of electrical power. The generators will serve as backup power, along with the electrical grid and batteries.
Last year, UTC Fuel Cells installed six units at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School in Middletown. The units form a 1.2-megawatt microgrid to provide power to buildings on the campus. This is currently the largest fuel cell installation in the world.
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen, or hydrogen-rich fuel, and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water. Fuel cells operate without combustion, making them almost pollution free. While a traditional generating system produces as much as 25 pounds of pollutants to generate 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the PC25 power plant produces less than an ounce.
UTC Fuel Cells has manufactured the PC25 power plant since 1991 and delivered more than 245 to customers in 19 countries on five continents. Those power plants have together accumulated nearly 5 million hours of operation.

If you have to ask such a simple question, may be your users DO know more then IT department.
I worked with deaf people for a while and they were (and I am sure still are) disappointed that cell phones are not compatible with TTY devices. How difficult is this to do?
This morning I got a spam via Windows Messenger service for a first time ever. It popped up on a computer almost never going out on the Net and sitting behind a NAT router. I disabled the service, but I hate starting a new round of spam fight. The spam was about Psychic phone service.
While admitting to downloading some redily avalble music, I mostly looked for some more obscure europian bands from 70s and 80s. They are long out of print, and there is no hope for new CDs. Now, thanks to RIAA, those musicians will be forgoten forever.
Betamax and Betacam formats have little in common. They share the shape of the cassette, but tape are different. Recording speed and layout is different too. Whatever it is now, Beta is doing just fine in broadcast industry. The major types are:
Betacam (Obsolete)
Betacam SP (Probably the most popular analog pro video format)
Digital Betacam (Excellent quality, very slight compression)
Betacam SX (Compressed Digital, Cheaper than above)
All formats, except for the original Betacam support not only Betamax style cassette, but also a large one with 3x recording time.
"If I don't have a long distance service with any phone company, I have to pay for the privilage of not depending on them."
I am not sure what original poster means by this. I used to have a landline phone with no long distance provider, and I am pretty sure I didn't pay a dime to AT&T or anyone else.
Microsoft Automap. It is GPS compatible and maps can be exported to the PocketPC. This product is not sold in US, you will have to find a dealer in UK or go to your favorite P2P network. I have Streets and Trips, which is a similar product for US with US map, and it is better then online services. It was unable to find a street address for a hotel in Washington DC located next door to the Microsoft's DC office, but this is an another story...
And for IE users, Nutshell toolbar does Dictionary.com search (and other popular sites too).
Why should I vote for him? Did he invented Internet?

A featherweight OS for my paperweight PC!
Is LCD on a MP3 Player a big news item?
Is Slashdot trying a new ad format?
Wireless hard drive may help, but wireless battery is what we need! :)
Phone works on 900 and 1800 MHz, USA uses 1900. Most of you, guys, will see it only on pictures!

I don't remember hearing about Beta IMX. Is it a new thing? I've been out of TV business for few years.

I am trying to imagine a show where things like Tampax are advertised
The plane is called "Spirit of Butts Farm". Is it powered by farts?
For those who didn't read the artile:
Only prerecorded VHS tapes will be discontinued, not the blank ones or VCRs.
