Your completely right. What defines what "the press" is and what they're responsibilities are. Is Fox News "the press" even though a Florida judge ruled they are not beholden to tell the truth since they are a form of entertainment? News organizations have proven time and time again that they will act irresponsibly to scoop a story whether it be true or not to the point of destroying lives, they should be held accountable for their mistakes. But there is definately a down side to this, who is going to protect the little guy trying to out his/her boss who is breaking the law? What protections do you and the people helping you have if you need to expose an organized crime boss who has the law bought and paid for and wants your name so they can kill your family? Imagine if Woodward and Bernstein were forced to expose their source would Watergate ever have occured? It is important that we as average citizens are able to expose corruption in our society no matter at what level of society that corruption occurs. We could possibly institute some sort of code of ethics that a news organization would have to agree to follow (with extremely harsh penalties for breaking said code) in order for them to recieve protection. But the press should not be able to hide behind "freedom of the press" when they do not act resposibly and hurt people.

Never underestimate MS's understanding of the bribe, they will bribe the music companies to let them sell cheaper music with a promise to institute tiered pricing once they reach a certain marketshare. They will bribe their customers by giving them cheap music at first then changing the pricing model once the customers are "hooked" (the first one is free paradigm). They will bribe the hardware manufacturers to exclusively build parts for them. And I guarantee that after installing the first SP of 2007, iTunes will start behaving "badly".

Then people always talk about how they can drop the phone, or stop the conversation if a situation that requires their complete attention arises. Ever think that situation may not have risen if you hadn't been on the phone in the first place?

This one always gets me. So on top of having to determine, analyse and react to an emergency situation, they have to terminate the call they are on? I dont know about anyone else but most emergency situations I have been in, time has been a critical factor. So not only do you have the added time to the determination and analysis phase you also are adding time to to the reaction phase to terminate the call. The people that use this argument are living in a fantasy world, of course anyone who thinks they are a good driver while doing anything but driving are living in a fantasy world.

Futhermore no one forced Apple to adopt support for DRM

Your wrong, the RIAA told Apple that they must support DRM or they couldnt sell their music. Since Apple cannot legally promote and distribute their own bands (through agreements with Apple Music Inc) their choices became support DRM or give up on iTunes. The decision to allow conversion to non-DRM'd formats (the RIAA is still pissed about this) was made for their customers while still pacifying the RIAA so they could implement iTunes in a timely manner. I can play the DRM'd music I download off of iTunes on my iPod (the real reason iTunes exists), and I can rip my own cds to my iPod using Apples DRM format, what exactly is Apples economic gain by allowing users to convert files to non DRM'd formats? Yet it still costs them real money to support this feature.

I have to agree with you about the double standard. I cant remember where I heard this but it seems the media (and Americans in general) encourages irresponsible behavior and discourages responsible behavior. Two gay people try to legally wed and they are bashed, but it is ok for them to live in "sin". A woman tries to get an abortion in a clean, safe manner she is bashed, but its ok to go to a dirty back alley doctor. Show a naked breast in a scene with two people who love each other and get bashed, but leaving a blood soaked trail of terrorists is ok. Try to take the fight to the people that actually attacked us, get labeled unpatriotic, but starting a war with someone because they are easy to beat is ok. Try and give 50,000 people jobs and get sued by your stock holders, put 50,000 people out of work by outsourcing and give yourself a nice fat bonus. Americans priorities are so screwed up it almost boggles the mind.

We also cannot forget that many politicians see their own personal security to be equivalent to National Security. Even though I think journalists have been acting very irresponsibly lately (though it has more to do with laziness and not verifing sources), it can be very difficult to tell whether a story will violate national security or is just some senator trying to cover up his/her indescretions. With an administration that uses the media to further their own political agenda (outing field CIA agents for political reasons), we cannot put the entire blame on the media.
