We only have a production environment to develop code, and use an interpreted language, so it's as simple as editing a file and sending a few HUP commands.
Except the lower layers typically aren't your problem, or require much "design". You buy 10G equipment from a reputable vendor, and you dont worry about it. What IS important is layer 3 and layer 4 stuff - that's where people fail all the time. "can you make a DNS entry for a webserver on a different port?" "its easier if you just use the 169.254 subnet" etc.
Because it has "space" in the story, it seems interesting, but really, considering the amount of space junk out there and the now-familiar processes and procedures to avoid it, this is mostly boring stuff.
A picture of a flowering tree, with the sky as a background? There's no context - you only know its a tree because you know it's a tree. Grainy picture of predator drone footage? Too blurry to even know what it is... unless you know what it is. This needs to be far more universal, something like the Voyager record. The one decent picture was the one of the moon, although the moon won't be in the same place in 5B years.
These pictures are from some Freshman Art 101 class, something a kid with an old SLR and some cheap B&W film might produce as some kind of "insightful" class project.
Why does it have to be a Raspberry? Why do you have to control it in C? Is it because people don't teach or know how to do it the old school way anymore? Is the effect somehow less if you DONT have a fancy OLED display?
THIS is why I cancelled my "MAKE" subscription - too much sizzle and not enough steak.
Try all the popular games, you're likely to get 1 hit - and that's all you need.
Who do you think built the computers your kid is learning to write HTML on, or in all likelihood, doing his creative writing on?
Man I hate America these days.
Why does it have to help the consumer?
And so did Linus Torvalds. How is this anything to claims superiority for?
Then start living that way - dont whine about how the business-controlled government fails to act - why would it?

Cardninal Rule: Don't fuck up.
It's worked mostly well for years now.
None of what you wrote has any meaning to the vast majority of PC and Apple users.
The only winning move is not to play.
Is Facebook relevant anymore? It is starting to have that Myspace-like stink about it.

This "submission" is simply a lift from the actual article.
If I wanted an RSS feed aggregator, I'd use a feed aggregator. Has Slashdot completely checked out at this point?

Acting like Bruce Perens is relevant only reinforces the stereotype that he is.
So you took biology, and made it into a series of quest arcs? Of course you're getting adoption from nerds.
If you call it "living abroad" and are all into smart phones, then you really belong over there.

What exactly does Facebook _do_ ?
Hackathon? Booksprint?
When did mundane events and tasks become faddish?
Wow, ask what Steam for Linux is, and you get trollmodded down to oblivion. Fanboi much?
386-16, 4MB of RAM
I win !
Is Steam a game? An app-store? A chat server? What does this DO for me, will it resolve stupid 3d acceleration bugs? Patch my free or non-free kernel?
Is this the new Facebook? A brief summary would be nice in the ... summary.
Where is this recent wave of Sinophelia coming from? Why would you want to go to that cesspool of human rights abuses?
Translation: "Hi I want to do a number of things, but am unwilling to accept the cost and consequences of my choices. How can I avoid responsibility?"
Rolling Stone is right up there with the NYT. The liberal version of Fox News.
