Now this is news for nerds and stuff that matters! We've been reading about this for years now and everytime the technology gets better and better, but when will we get it? I hope it's really soon. But it's very good to hear that they're making progress and that it's getting closer. I'm still worried about the framerate though using organic displays.
>Funny thing, isn't it? (originally found on heise.de)" No, it's not. Sounds like any DDOS attack. most modern firewalls and routers can filter and detect this for you. As soon as it sees something that looks like this it can block and reroute. Not rocket science.
.I've heard (rumors) that linux distros aren't *that* laptop friendly. I'm sure it depends on your hardware, but I've got a Dell CPx P3 650 which is way over a year old. The poor thing really needs a new battery and it only lasts about 20 minutes in Windows under normal load. When I boot into Mandrake 9.0 however , it can run for at least an hour or a tad longer sometimes - under a much higher load (because I can do more). I'm just damn exited about FreeBSD5 with sparc64 support. I've just downloaded and as soon as I get the change I'm gonna try it out on a bored machine in the server room.
I was wondering when that will happen. Especially with all the delays in getting 3G up and running and with the high costs of getting normal mobile telephony switches to do higher bandwidth through all kinds of tweaks and compression, it just makes sense to use a tried and tested technology. They could mountstrong wifi antennas on each current basestation and use that for multimedia phones. That will also solve the problem of a manager sending a 101x80 res video clip of his new porsche to his mother and thereby congesting all voice traffic on that cell. I think this should be researched further and implemented.
Ericsson handsets is only a small part of their business. That is also the only area where they partnered with Sony. Ericsson provides mobile and fixed-line infrastructure, switches, base stations , routers, Billing systems, Pre-paid Solutions, ADSL/SHDSL/xDSL Broadband, MMS, GPRS, HSCSD and LOTS more...
Actually that sounds more like a move that MS would make. 0 devided by 0 = 0 by definition. In fact, the correct number is infinite. The closer you get to zero, the bigger the answer.
As much as I agree with most of the pervious comments being jokes, I still have my sense of humor left. Or maybe it's just because I hardly use it. Anyway. I am also interested to know how kernel config will be treated in the future. IMHO that's one of the strongest points and as more and more modules become available for the latest hardware, we still need to support the old, forgotten hardware of yester-year. You must be joking about the HURD remark! Another thing: I like reiserfs, but I really like the way ext3 performs. So far it looks like Linus is still on the right track and I trust his judgement. Now they should just PLEASE name it 2.6 and not 3.0! That will spoil everything.
Yeah , Congratulations and salutations to all you guys and all the staff that kept it real through the years. Now I hope that you guys can find a way to make a lot of money.Maybe you already do! Anyway, even here on the shit-side of earth in South Africa,/. is the only site that I check >20 a day, at night and on weekends and (almost) always enjoy. Good stuff!
I've been a Mandrake fan for a long time now and even defended it bravely against other distro's , but 8.2 really dissapointed me. I felt like the whole distro treated me like a newbie trying out GNU/Linux for the very first time. That pissed me off and I went back to FreeBSD and then back to Mandrake 8.0 after I needed to run some customized perl stuff. Now, I'm ready to try an update again, but I'm too damned scared that 9.0 might suck even harder! I won't easily change to another distro (tried most of them),but I'd hate to listen to another buddy looking over my shoulder at the install saying"Hey dude, that really sucks! What's that Linux for dummies?" and not having to say " Oooohh, shit, you're right man! What happened to Mandrake?" Let's try it and see anyway. I'd like to think of myself as a power user with 8 yrs exp in most *nixes and not some script kiddie that wants to play games in X.
Very interesting to note that tel companies are staring to adapt it. It's just funny that not a lot of small to medium companies are not following the same route. I mean, Linux on the desktop will be easier to adopt for companies that does not have a lot of people to train on it and where the cost of deploying a couple of Windows desktops can take a big chunk out of the budget. It would be easier to maintain if the sys admins run Linux on the servers anyway. But since I'm working for a big tel co that wastes a lot of money on anything...I'm just waiting for the announcement that Linux can be used as a reliable platform for GSM call switching. Now that would make a difference.
Just ran it on MS windows XP. Itr came to $0.39 Damn! Does that mean that I've been * coughing* paying too much?

Pfft, How many times I wished that I could just get the source code for a windows app and compile it myself and know for sure it's gonna work on my platform. If you're looking for a Next -> Complete install -> Finish , stick with Win. It doesn't show you exactly what it's doing. I prefer compiling my own from source. -- Linux/Unix/*ix is user-friendly! It's just picky about the friends it chooses --
Damn! And I just upgraded my 8086 to a 20Mb drive and CGA instead of Herculus Monochrome. Can't wait to upgrade my Ram from 512k to 640k. I heard that's more than enough for anyone... Hmm, I wonder if the next FF and DOOM 5 will require a Cray?
I get so frustrated of reading about cool new things like this that will really make it feel like we passed the year 2000. Most of the time it just gets hyped and then it fades away. Just think back to when you were small. We all thought that we will have flying cars and holographic tv's etc. Companies try so hard to come up with brilliant ideas but it's either too expensive or they get a slap on the wrist from someone else that claim it was their idea. The last cool thing that really made a difference was cellphones. At the moment the economy is still in a slump worldwide and everyone is just waiting for the next "big" thing . It might be 3G in Telecoms, or whatever, but I think something like this is a step in the right direction. If it works so well, why not throw our old 2D Tv's out the window and switch the whole world over to 3D TV? Especially with CPU power doubling every 18 months, I'm sure it would just be some time and a lot of sales (at competing prices) before everyone would get one. That would drive the price evern lower and open up new markets. I really hope this takes off.
Yeah, despite the fact that it's an excellent piece of technology, there's still some things(like PDA's) that does a better job at being a PDA. If you want a laptop, get a proper laptop. Hmm, I'm sure a lot of people will think differently... Nevermind. I'm just jealous because I can't afford one yet...
While we're at it, let's attack cartoons as well. Don't look at I am Weasel as a sort of funny entertainment anymore, rather think of how many medical and physics rules are broken. Pfftt. Movies are there for escapism... Just like drugs. Hey why not judge the physics of my last bad trip where a truck was floating 4 feet above the ground?
From what I've heard the story is like this: When you experience excessive G-forces, moments of weightlessness and stuff like that , you brain analyses all the weird signals and come to a conclusion: You've been poisoned! It the tries to fix it by either making you vomit out the "evil poison" or adjusting your body to cope with all the weird input signals. And when you're back on the ground, your brain in still adjusting to make up for the wild ride, so every step is a warning that some bad fall is gonna come next and sh*t like that. So... We have a neural network that learn from past experiences and tries to adapt / supress / analyse future possible scenarios. Deal with it.
You bastards! You used my laptop screen to display your news on. I'll sure you for every unit of electricity wasted. Oh, wait.. there's more. I think you even used my CPU cycles to generate a nice page from YOUR html code. I'll get you for that too!!! PS: I'll settle out of court for $1, ok?

Another new input device.
Why not just stick my mouse to my hand with superglue?

Oh, yeah and "shiny disks". Man! That justifies the price. No use putting it on those dull disks.

For fsck sake. If I have to read about this 1 more time, I'm gonna screamjet.

Oh, And I thought Bluetooth was something entirely different. Silly me. Hey, buster! Watch what you're saying or I'll knock your phone out!
Yeah, I believe Cray is gonna sell a lot more High-end systems this year... with Final Fantasy XI being released and all.
