It's strange that very few other games have tried this technique, as it seems to have worked very well.

It's not a game, but the Matrix did this. Neo only speaks a few dozen lines, all of them insubstantial (except for his final monologue).

As did Johnny Mnemonic, Speed and almost every other film where Keanu Reeves plays the central character... hey waitasec!

    1) Your calculations are off. 20 years * 365 d/y * 12 hours/day * 60 min/hr /2 million stones = 2.6 blocks/minutes. That's significantly longer than 20-30 seconds.

Think you'll find that 2.6 blocks/minute is about 23 seconds per block, which is what he said.

What you calculated was 2.6 minutes/block.

Although, given this is a stats thread, I am sure that I too will be proved wrong. Kinda like posting a speling Nazi post!

True. Of course, one might argue that while the Iraqis did have tanks, what they did not have was any kind of air force.

Just a point of info : I don't believe they lied to get their visas. The UK (and, I think, France) has a "Visa Waiver Program" with the USA. This states that you don't need a visa if you're travelling to the USA for non-business use for a period of up to 6 months.

So, yes, they should have got a working visa (a J-1?) but they didn't lie.. they just didn't think they needed one.

These are all Europeans, used to being able to travel anywhere in Europe and report on trade shows and what-have-you without restriction. Any EU citizen can work in any other country, it is part of the Free Trade agreement.

The UK journos might not have realised the differences. If you can go report on things in Germany or Spain, wouldn't you think you could do the same in the US?

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I realise how difficult it would be to get the correct visa. Under current US law, the only way for a non-citizen to get a permit to work is either to be sponsored by a US company (who has to prove that nobody in the USA can do that job) or marry someone. How would a journo for a foreign paper get such a visa?

(Disclaimer : The USA currently has over 40 different categories of visas. There might be a different one that applies).

police in many cities worldwide do video surviellence of major demonstrations/protests/etc - but as part of their own defense. Some protest groups, for whatever reason, are quick to say there was undue police force involved if they get arrested, deny things like resisting arrest, etc. The tapes are used to counter those arguments.

Think I'm off my rocker? Guess what - protest groups bring their own cameras to do their own surveillence of the police. It's used both ways to keep everyone (protesters and police) in check.

Seems to me that the difference is that the police can make those cameras "go away" fairly easily.

In the UK silence is basically an admission of guilt. You are not told "You have the right to remain silent", you are told "Anything you do not say now may later harm your defence" or something like that. IANAL - could someone better grounded in this give us a more accurate quote please?

"You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention now, anything you later rely on in court. Anything you do say will be given in evidence."

We lost the "Right to Silence" in the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. Under the new laws, although we are under no obligation to self-incriminate, the court can now make inferences as regards to silence under the following circumstances :

    1) Failure to mention a fact when questioned under caution before charge which is relied on in defence.

    2) Failure on being charged with an offence or informed of likely prosecution, to mention a fact which it would have been reasonable to mention at the time.

    3) Failure or refusal to account for objects, substances or marks found on your person, in or on your clothing or otherwise in your possession, in the place where you were arrested (if asked).

    4) Failure or refusal after your arrest to account for your presence at a place at or about the time the offence is alleged to have been committed (if asked)
