If Geohot has broken the law (DMCA), then how and why does Sony (a private entity) have any right to seize his personal property? If anything, the US Government should be seizing his property as evidence that he committed a federal crime. Last I heard, plaintiffs cannot seize defendants' property in a civil lawsuit. 6. I love it and I hate it on Slashdot Launches Re-Design · · Score: 1

I love the new Look and Feel, it is very pleasing and soothing, and does not anger me in ways the old design did for no apparent reason. But I absolutely hate this new fixed-frame design. My laptop screen is 1280x800 and the links on the left go all the way to the bottom, so much in fact that I'm not sure if "storage" is the last link or not. I would like an option to disable this fixed area and just let the whole page scroll normally. Also, with the old slider on the left, it would float as I scrolled, and now it's all the way at the top. I don't want to have to scroll all the way back up when I'm balls-deep in some comments and suddenly want to readjust my threshold.

I have been on permanent Chrome boycott ever since I noticed that it totally hoses the URL association in Windows when you uninstall it. I don't know if this is a bug, or a "feature" to keep you on Chrome instead of IE, but I've seen several computers now where I've uninstalled Chrome and suddenly URL links in other applications simply result in an error, despite all my effort to repair/reconfigure IE and/or hack the registry to restore functionality. That, and it looks too post-modern for my tastes.

  17. How about using your Inbox for what it is? on GMail Introduces Priority Inbox · · Score: 1

It's called the "Inbox" for a reason. It should only be used for messages that have arrived and need your attention. Everything else should be filed accordingly. GMail makes mail organization stupidly easy. Just create labels and apply as many of them as you need to each message. Put a star or other flags on things that need follow-up. And when you're done with something, archive it. All these new GMail features are unnecessary. :(

If you've ever paid a speeding ticket rather than (successfully) contesting it in court, you are by definition a law-abiding criminal.

This is (at least in the US) incorrect. Speeding tickets are a civil infraction, which is a decriminalized offense. Therefore, you are by definition NOT a criminal when you pay for (and therefore plead guilty to) a speeding ticket. However, reckless driving (typically 20+ mph over the limit, among other actions) is considered a crime, as it is a misdemeanor.

But seriously, warn all your normie friends about this. My parents were surprised such a thing would be a scam, and my mom's sister even got popped for $90 by these people. Of course, after I told her about it and she tried to call them back, the number was "no longer in service".

Education about the scam is the only way to avoid it.

Our company does business in China and even has an office there. We have to constantly remind our employees that it is illegal to use VPN in China. Using SSH is also disallowed.

You could, however, setup a unencrypted SOCKS proxy on some random port.

    Here's how I'd do it:

    • setup a Linux server at home with basic Telnet access, this will give you unencrypted shell access
    • setup your router to forward several dozen ports to port 23 on the server, this will give you redundant paths back to your server
    • setup a SOCKS proxy on your server, but do not grant any access yet (except maybe for your internal network to test)
    • again, setup a few dozen redundant ports for the SOCKS proxy
    • once you're in China, console into your server and allow only the IP you're connected on
    • configure your browser (Firefox?) to use the SOCKS proxy
    • happy surfing!
