That's definitely part of the "shine wearing off" that I was alluding to, when you realize that everything you'd paid so much money for is so tightly controlled that you feel like you never really own or have control over the stuff you buy. But you're right, it's ultimately this kind of control that consumers are going to reject in the long run.

  4. This is why on Poll Shows That 75% Prefer Printed Books To eBooks · · Score: 1, Insightful

I always get a good chuckle out of those that insist gaming will go all-digital and never look back. It's a fad, plain and simple. People hopped on the e-book bandwagon because it was cool, hip, and trendy to whip out your Kindle in the coffee shop or on the train, but now that people have gotten to see all the downsides of having books but not really having books the shine has worn off and they're back to buying hardcopies.

The same will happen with games. Once the shine of digital-only gaming (especially in the console arena) wears off and people realized they're getting screwed by not having a disc the trend will reverse itself and those companies that refuse to offer games on disc will ultimately suffer.

Someone accidentally or purposefully takes down your cloud server, and then there's not a damned thing you can do about it but wait until the problem is solved by the people who run those servers. Which, depending upon the situation, could be weeks, months, or even never.

Doesn't sound like a very smart idea to me. Using the cloud as an additional backup measure seems perfectly reasonable. Using it as your primary solution? Nope, pretty damned stupid.

  8. Yup, and we all said it on day one. on Microsoft's Surface RT Was Doomed From Day One · · Score: 1

Microsoft screwed the pooch on this and we all knew it from the day it was announced. They come to the tablet party with their own proprietary OS and app store 2 years AFTER the two dominant players in this arena have already obliterated all their competition. Strike 1.

And hey, let's call it Windows RT and make it look like it's running the PC version of Windows and is fully compatible so we can trick people into buying it and hope they're not so thoroughly disgusted by the ruse that they return it. Yeah, well that strategy surely had no flaws. Strike 2.

The third nail in the coffin: price. Let's charge a premium price for a deceptive device that has a fraction of the usability of competing tablets. Aaaand strike 3, you're OUT!

Honestly, a better way to go would have been to make these Android tablets with a Windows 8 launcher/shell. So you get the benefits of promoting your brand, the interface of your new PC OS, and some genuinely innovative hardware features, but without actually deceiving people and delivering an overpriced tablet that has no ecosystem to support it.

But since when in recent memory has Microsoft ever done the smart thing? They just keep proving over and over again in the last 5 years they are COMPLETELY CLUELESS. So none of this should come as a shock to anyone.

Just think, how many times have you seen a morbidly obese person and felt disgusted? Admit it, all the time. And studies have shown that morbidly obese people are actually disgusted by themselves. I'm telling you, it's genetic. Our brains are just wired that way.

If you think about it it makes sense too. Throughout most of the course of human history food has always been scarce and a valuable commodity. Someone who was morbidly obese meant they were clearly getting a disproportionate amount of food than other people, meaning they were a hindrance to a community. Not only could they not physically contribute, but they were consuming far more than their fair share of food. Very easy to see why such people would be shunned, despised and disgusted.
