there are still many problems with palms in this category. the nvfs issues with the new treo 650 and palm life drive device attest to this. it is non-trivial to move a palm app to run fully on an SD.
Yes, you can run many apps from the SD card, but it's sure not all of them and it's sure not assumed to work.
The quality is great. We splurged with new speakers at the same time so we just can't get over the difference from the old gear (Yamaha/Sony/Pioneer/etc).
One of the enhancement requests via the Users Forum is for seamless play. With the soft upgrades, it should be a future improvement.
They have already did a patch for things like additional format support, Rhapsody support, etc.
I'm thrilled to see this post and admittingly biased. I've had 4 ZonePlayers and 2 Controllers for a few months now and can't recommend them enough. I've plugged them into a B&W Speakers and they just rock.
Why is Sonos great? (in no particular order)
1. No need to put your MP3s on it's HD. You store them where you want and simply mount a drive 2. A remote anyone can use with no training. My previous hacked together PocketPC device accessing internal website via 802 was a disaster. 3. Use traditional audiophile grade gear (amps with sonos as preamp) and input devices (DVD, tape deck, LP, etc) as inputs to Sonos. Nothing beats an LP streamed all over the house 4. Play multiple zones "in Sync" (all playing the same thing in time) or each zone plays what it wants 5. It just works. Well. Hugely high Wife Acceptance Factor (WAF). 6. Software upgrades (flashable ROM) to hardware. I've never got an upgrade to my old, black rack audio gear. 7. water-resistant remote 8. Desktop client, if you can't find a remote, use your laptop 9. we just listen to more music. 10. whole home networking without running wires (here in Boston, old home networking can be tough) 11. programable interface 12. active developers community
What I don't love about Sonos: 1. Cost 2. No support for real/MS/quicktime, only shoutcast. For now, hoping for an upgrade
That's really it. The wife and I just love it. I can't recommend it enough.
Feel free to post questions about the devices if you like and I'll try to answer.
How can you possibly say Hardly anyone can touch type? That's crazy. Further, there is no way a mini-keyboard can possibly keep up with a full sized keyboard. I have had all of the mini keyboard (RIM, Treo, T/C, Palm add on one, HP PPC, etc) and used them all extensively. I've even considered myself reasonably fast on them but there is no way in hell they could keep up with my typing on a normal keyboard. You must be really slow on a keyboard. I can type on a normal keyboard faster then I can think. The mini keyboards will never be as fast as a full sized.
That said, they are still beter then graffiti for many users.
Can someone mod this parent down. The final comments on Space Travel are ridiculous. Of course we didn't go into space 50 years after the revolution, that was the early 1800s you dipshit. Let me guess, it took you less time after colonial rule to get the Internet. shock! How about HDTV, how long after colonial rule did it take you to get that, damn you beat us again.
How about this for a measure wise guy. How long where you ruled by a colonial power? What took you so long? Come up, pull it together, and get rid of those damn brits. What are you, a slacker?
the catch with points though, is that you are going to use a credit card anyway, why not get points as well? i've gotten a ton of free stuff from Amex over the years, including 2 full sets of calphalon cookware, 7 nights in Hawaii free, just flew to Peru for free, all from amex. it's an incentive to use a particular card.
When I read this question my first response was the same, MBA. However, I assumed the slashdot crowd would be it's usual, tech-obsessed, bunch-of-teenage, know-it-alls, you-don't-need-a-degree-just-linux-experience. I'm glad to see so many agree with the wisdown of this comment. An MBA paired with a technical degree is a great choice. Hopefully this is a sign slashdot is growing up and leaving goatse, natalie portman, and grits behind.
One summer I did landscaping. It sucked. The particular work we were doing was damn, damn hard. Half way thru the summer, I literaly would have to soak my hands in hot water every morning to get them to move, at all. I told my boss I quit and told him way. The next summer my buddy worked for him and I was remembered, and laughed at, as "the guy who quit for his hands".:-) Its all good though.
It really hurt, not being laughed at but my hands, they really hurt.
I recently left a job where I was a member of the founding team of the company. I had been there for four years and the company was moving in a different strategic direction. However, I knew that as soon as my resume hit the street my boss would hear about it. He had been good to me over the years and I felt I owed it to them to be up front and be the one to tell them. Not them hear it from someone else. Plus, I had tons of connections in the field I was staying in. Many at small companies and many at large, so I knew I would have good options for a place to land. Which I did, with a great company who I'm thrilled to be with. Moral of the story, sometimes its the right thing to do.
My wife and I were talking about this and she noted beyond ST, most of our other favorites shows were on HBO. HBO picking up ST would be the best thing that could happen. They could really push the episodes beyond where UPN could ever imagine. Really cutting edge stuff. I know its a dream and not going to happen but imagine how innovative they could be....
Actually, I have bought a car across state lines and it was tax free. My wife (at the time girlfriend) lived in NH, and was going to school in IN. She bought a car in IN and since she lived in NH, she didn't pay sales tax on it. Ever. The IN dealer didn't collect sales tax as she was from a different state and NH doesn't have sales tax. It rocked!
The Panera buy my office has a fireplace section with couches and stuffed chairs expressly to encourage people to lounge all day. I've had coworkers have meetings there and not order anything at all. On Saturday nights they have live music after that continues after people have stopped ordering food. I've seen the same people in there when I bought coffee in the AM and lunch in the PM.
While I completely agree GTA played no part in this. I do have a question.
What kind of Police Station/Officers let a criminal they just arrested have access to a gun! I would think this would be one of those things they think through. Isn't this something covered in Police 101. When arresting individual, don't allow easy access to your freaking gun! He is a 18 year old kid. You are three trained police officers. Even if he got the gun, you have to think he is nervous and scared yet was able to get off at least three fatal shots. What were these cops doing?
I like Tivo, actually I love my Tivo. That said, I worry about Tivos business stability. A couple other points though.
1. Frequently the slashdot community will say get MythTV, get this, get that instead. Before I got my Tivo I priced out Myth based boxes and Windows Media Player boxes and they were all orders of magnitude more expensive.
2. The home media player option. Frequently, the response is "why not just plug in your PC to your stereo to view JPGs or play MP3s". That assumes your computer is close to your TV and Stereo. For some this may be the case. For many others though their TV and Stereo are in a position where they can't simply plug in my computer (or more accurately my wife has forbid me from snaking cables all over the house)
3. TivoToGo: Yes the download speed is shockingly slow. This is hardly a massive issue though. You can queue up a number of transfers and go on to something else.
At the end of the day, the Tivo interface is what wins. It is simple and clean. Anyone can use it. Couple that with no having to build a Myth system myself and it's a winner for me. Yes, you could save a few bucks here and there buy doing more yourself but to me, my time is worth more then hacking together yet another system.
I've been tracking sonos for a while and noticed a few comments today about how expensive it is. I just don't feel $1200 for a music distribution system, a remote and two amps is all that much. I guess it all comes down to the quality of the amps. And that is my ?. Are these Sony/Pioneer (not picking on those, I have gear from both so no flame intended) or is this audiophile grade gear (ala B&O/Carver/etc).
Does anyone who has used the Sonos (beta testers) have an opinion on quality of amps?
Finally, I have a general ?. I want to use a Sonos ZP for source but want to power 4 sets (8 total) speakers on my first floor from it. Any suggestions on supplemental amps to do that?
Not bitching, just saying it goes quick. I agree, all self imposed, at the same time, pretty reasonable and standard. It is my choice, and I'm fine with it, just saying how cash goes quicker then you might think.
Try moving to a real city (NY, San Fran, Chicago, Boston, etc), have a wife (which means wedding and ring) and kids (oh my), stop living like a teenager, buy a house, 401k and roth, couple cars, some decent vacations, some brokerage fun and bamm! you are spending that kind of cash and then a whole lot more. it goes quick.
I would try the latest version of the tivo desktop. I had 1.2 and that caused all kinds of problems. 1.3 and 1.4 helped. i just downloaded 2.0 so i can't comment on it yet.

I don't get this? What is he suppose to remove? fsck isn't a typo, it's File system check. I'm confused...

Thanks for the initial post though and the great pointer.

Context Setting: I'm a big fan of Tivo.
I would like to see:
Music Playback control thru 802 enabled palm or pocketpcs!
Ability to play music with TV turned off
Use Tivo as web brower
You are right. My bad earlier. Thanks.
I posted this in a sub-thread but thought I would call it out to a larger group.
A must read, especially for this group, is "Make it So, Leadership Principals of Jean Luc Picard" by Wess Roberts and Bill Ross.
Even better was the second book by this author and a MUST READ FOR THIS CROWD. "Leadership principals of Jean Luc Picard".

One, the Treo is made by PalmOne, formerly Handspring. Two, Sony is out of the Palm business. Keep up or don't post.
