this has been an issue I (we all) have been fighting for a while. I recently saw an interesting system called sonos (www.sonos.com). It's an amp with built in mp3 decoder and wifi/wired connections. It comes with an ipod-with-screen based remote. You can connect them together and use one as a standard RCA input (for things like a tuner, dvd, etc) and all other amps share that central source. All amps play mp3s and stream web radio. This does not come out until later this year.
For now, I'm using Tivo home media and not really loving it.
the definition from the book. thats great. thats the difference between a course and real life. companies want to convince customers what they need and that they need a lot of it.
i was working for a large, large consumer goods company where one of their VPs said to me, "there is food we produce to eat and food we produce to sell" while looking at a can of mini-franks (cocktail franks).
The newer version (1.1) has improved this quite a bit. It's still not as nice as iTunes, but it's much better then 1.0. You might check it out at tivo.com.
I'm sitting here reading these replies and thinking how sad it is. Every school is different but I can tell you there are still many schools out there where crime is very rare. My freshmen year I went with security at the top of my mind. I had a security cable and full cabinet for my pc, a secure box for other gear, etc. My roommate and hallmates turned out to be my best friends in the world. A few weeks after moving in, all that security seemed more then a bit lame and bite-in-the-ass. By my senior year we lived in a house with no locks on the door, hell, people coming in and out at all hours, huge parties, the works all with a number of PCs, a unix (real unix not linux) box, laptops, nice stereo gear, and more and never had a single thing stolen. Use your head but still trust your neighbors. And most importantly, enjoy these four years (strike that, make it 5 or 6), works is nice but a lot less fun then college....
I'm a bit torn by this but overall this is a good thing. I have had many, many Sony PDAs over the years. I used an NX70V for a long time and really enjoyed it. However, as a developer, the Sony devices were a royal pain in the ass. The UI was painful to deal with. Their OS4 devices were a disaster, again, from the independent developer POV. They did move the ball forward though. They will be missed.
What do people think about Quicksilver? I am just finishing it and am very disappointed. I loved cryptonomicon but am struggling thru quicksilver. Why bring back waterhouse and the shaftoes, can't we think of new characters? And the story is dragging by. Long passages on life in feudal europe, the french, the english, the dutch, it's dull. What do other people think though?
What dogs do you people run into? Where are wild dogs still roaming free? I was a paper boy for years. The easiest way to deal with a dog is slowly back away while saying NO with a firm voice.
I have ran in downtown NYC, Boston, Toronto, rural Indiana, Penn, and Charlotte and never run into these packs of wild dogs attacking runners like mad.
I couldn't agree more. Add in a mortgage, wife and kids and you aren't going anywhere. it's the trap of middle/upper class. You lock yourself into a lifestyle that requires you continue to spend more and more time in the office and enjoy it less and less.
I got my first X10 gear thru the Firecracker promotion. I later (and continue to) buy tons of other home automation gear. I convinced three other friends to buy the Firecracker units, each still use them actively today. I would call that a successful ad campagin.
I'm sorry to hear you did not get your Firecracker unit. I would though encourage you to try another X10 product. I sure don't work for X10, but must admit I have had a lot of luck over the years with their gear and encourage you to check it out.
It works great with Misterhouse (www.misterhouse.com).
NetNews was a common term used to refer to Usenet for years. You can find a good reference at http://livinginternet.com/?u/ui.htm. (Select the NetNews link)
A simple google search turned up tons of info on the history of NetNews/Usenet. As my grandmother use to say "Please use your eyes instead of using your mouth."
I posted this story a bit ago, but it's relevant yet again. A while ago I added the Home Media option to my Tivo. It connects to my Linux box via 802.11b. So I'm streaming an MP3 from my linux box one day to my tivo->stereo and the Mrs. puts something in the microwave. The music stops. The microwave counts down, 3...2...1 and the music starts. Very cool. Clearly the microwave has been interfering for years with my web connection, but the latency and design of the web allow for intermittent connections and thus I don't normally realize the microwave is killing my connection. But you sure do when an MP3 cuts out. Very cool.
Officially, the WinCE platform still lives. MS branched the PPC platform from the WinCE platform but continue to use WinCE. Many of the embedded devices (car radios, etc) use WinCE. FYI.
I use to work at a brokerage firm, a big one, and they do exactly that. Record each and every call that comes in. All of them. And the real kicker is they use the recorded calls all the time. They have to go back to the calls to find out exactly what was said and when.
You're kidding about that right? I type IP addresses constantly. In a large network, invariably, some machines names aren't resolving correctly. Work for a large company with many, many types of machines (think 3-4 flavors of unix, macs, pcs, mainframes, some vaxes still floating around, boat loads of AS/400s, etc) and you'll be typing IP addresses in your sleep.
I saw a few posts about cordless phone interference and 802.11 and wanted to add a recent experience. I recently added the MP3 capapbility to my Tivo and was streaming MP3s off my shared drive (linux of course) via 802.11b. Works great. (The Tivo MP3 play functionality sucks but thats a different story). So i'm listening to the music just fine and my wife puts dinner in the microwave. Now we have all heard about microwaves interfering with 802 before but i have never had a problem before. So as soon as she turns on the microwave, the music cuts out. The microwave counts down 3...2...1 and queue the music. While I have run the microwave for years while surfing the web and checking email, I have never noticed the problem. The statelessness of web surfing masks the interference of the microwave. The MP3 streaming highlights the issues of microwave interference. The moral of this story, don't count on 802 for network connectivity.
so does anyone have a link to show how to extract files from a tivo. I have looked around some and not been able to find a program to let me extract the files in a format that is useable. Thanks.
that is crazy logic. MS has 90% of the market, do they only make correct decisions in any category?

ahh, I thought it was DIPSHIT
The article says "2,500 wholesalers in the United States. Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania between them have 3,200 wholesalers and distributors."
2500 wholesalers in US
3200 Wholesales and distributors in WV, PA an ohio
it's the distributors that is the larger number.
my bad...

not to mention, 8 inch floppies were long gone before 2400 baud modems came out. hell, my 300 baud modem came out after my 8 inch floppy was gone.
we have covered this in the past. it's not bayonet whatever whatever and it's not bolt nut connector, etc.
it's actually Bayonet Neill Concelman. check out http://www.marvac.com/funpages/rf_information.htm
