  17. I will get a UNIX workstation soon. on Do You Get a UNIX Workstation at Work? · · Score: 1

I've asked myself the same question recently. Since all of my development is for linux and solaris should my workstation be Unix as well?

I believe yes, but not because of linux zeoletry but mostly because of my style of development.

@ work I spend all my time using PUTTY/Exceed/XEmacs and screen sessions.

It just seams that Windows just gets in the way of getting my work done and it will be more stable in my case to run my consoles and some of Xapps natively.

Sooner or later during the day and for whatever reason (crashes, memory... etc...), I have to reboot my workstation and restart all of my xapps. This means that my work is interrupted and I have to restart my work. Hopefully, I've saved my work before it happens.

Exceed is a great application but I hate it when XEmacs crashes or when one xapp stalls all of them stalls.
I also loathe the way windows groups all of my Exceed applications into one column making it harder for me to switch between Xapps.

IMHO, putty stinks but it's way better than using xterm under Exceed only because windows will group my putty sessions seperately from Exceed!

  20. Linux Sys admins actually update their machines. on Windows Servers Beat Linux Servers · · Score: 2, Insightful

    This is just pure FUD.

Uptime is something I see as completely meaningless, the longer the uptime just means the longer the machine wasn't rebooted that's all. Why would a sys admin reboot? After a major update or a new kernel or even after serious patches.
In the world of linux, there's constant improvements, enhancements and security patches in the kernel and in the server software. I think the gap is more to do with Linux Sys admins being more active in maintaining their boxes compared to the windows sys admins.

If windows 2K/2003 servers do have longer uptimes than that to me is just scary, it means those sys admins aren't applying security patches regularly.

    My 2 cents.

I agree with a lot of posts here with regards to polishing your resume.

I don't know the nature of your application or which field your employer is in so I can't make a good comment on your situation.

Your development staff is quite small 5 (FTEs) so a rewrite will be very difficult to do and maintain your existing app at the same time.

Unfortunately, I get this sinking feeling in my stomach when I read that your IT director is looking at an offshore to assist in the migration to Java.

Does this mean that you're going to be offshored someday? Or does it mean that he does recognizes the high costs of the rewrite?

It's silly to think that just rewriting your existing application in another language is going to solve all your problems instantly.
If you're going to rewrite, atleast keep it in house and retain your intellectual property within the company and keep your staff up to date with its own software products.

What I believe might happen is that the rewrite will be assisted by this offshore company by people who don't understand the business concepts as well as your staff does and it may end up being a buggier mess than the original.

Better to hire some experienced Java programmers with a strong C++ background to help with this rewrite.

    Goodluck.

CPAN is great and its what keeps Perl relevant and it works well for the Perl community. All these java libraries bundled with the JDK should be more modular with a lean core distro and then the rest can be organized and installed as modules.

And like everything CPAN all these modules will be peer reviewed by other Java developers in the open source and corporate worlds.

I've been using computers since my Tandy 1000 SL, which used DOS 3.0 and some desktop software called Desk Mate. I was not a GUI guy, I did everything in the command line. Believe it or not I never touched Windows 3.1 and jumped straight to Windows 95 when I bought my first Pentium 100 Mhz.

I first thought windows was so freaken awesome until I realized for the first time, my machine is getting slow.. I'll tell you something, during my DOS days I've never seen my computer as slow. Back then, I was functional, I could do everything on that old tandy machine, my homework, qbasic programming, bbsing etc, play shitty games etc.. If i needed to do repetitive work I would write quick batch scripts and I was no real programmer back then.

Since windows came along, each and every release from the Microsoft Corporation demanded a stronger machine and more dependancy on using my mouse. I don't know why we bother having a keyboard anymore. Just make a virtual keyboard instead and add a second mouse for my other hand. Maybe I'll get more out windows that way.

    So what's my point?

Aren't computers supposed to be more productive today than yesterday?

I used to be able to dish out 50 page research papers in less time but now I spend more time formatting my document using my mouse and waiting for my software to do actually do the action. My machine is getting too slow again! To help things I can't type long papers and have to cut it up, because the software I'm using is getting too heavy.
Why on earth on we always forced to upgrade? Software is supposed to get better not worse.

So screw that, I'm not touching Vista just like I didn't touch windows 3.1. I've made the switch completely to Linux now. I can do my work using just my keyboard, type documentation using latex, write scripts like I used to with batch files, i can stay in my console all the time again. On top of that I'm still using a Pentium III with just 500 Megs of Ram and its fast enough!

    Vista can kiss my ass!
