Asking a bunch of strangers on an IT-centric website like Slashdot gets you nothing if you really just want to learn to cook, for instance. But here's my advice:

1.Get a job for 6-12 months doing something you like. This step can be avoided if you have a trust fund or money already saved up. Unless this happens to be your dream job, PLAN TO QUIT in 6-12 MONTHS!

    2. Take the money and go outside your comfort zone. Travel outside the US for a few months, preferably in a country that doesn't have English as a primary language. Stay at hostels. Meet people. Experience life. Don't jump right back into the daily grind of the academic world. There's plenty of daily grind waiting for you when you start working full-time.

    3. Use the time you've set aside between high school graduation and starting college to figure out what it is that you enjoy. That should narrow your focus enough to start targeting universities and disciplines.

    4. Once you know what you want, go get it. Obsession is 9/10's of the law. You won't get to do it right away, so plan on holding a few crappy jobs on the way, so don't stress.

Sounds like a great idea until you add the police link-up. What place does law enforcement have in "checking attendance"? Whatever happened to just reading out thier names in class? How many truant officers will get auto-dispatched if the kids are late? Will Little Johnny graduate with a criminal record as well as a diploma?

If we had these in my school when i was a kid, we'd still skip classes, and just have someone else carry whatever the tag is imbedded in. The classrooms would be more than half-empty and the records would show 100% attendance.

And the results would probably be held up as a successful demonstration of RFID use by some politico: "Attendance was 100% after we installed the system!".

Have no fear though, kids will trash the system. Imagine a backpack of RFID-enabled ID cards coming into a school, getting tossed out a window, coming in and getting scanned again, a spilt Coke in the reader, etc.

md is fun when you're bored. I also set up a 4 device RAID 5 on a single drive with 4 partitions to win a bet with a friend who said "you can't do raid 5 on one drive". I got 2 cases of beer out of it and he's still pissed. Chuck that at your favorite MSCE and watch him twitch.
