was a UN with teeth. Violate the charter and we'll come after you. Much more effective than the current talking sessions, which no violator ever takes serious. Now *that* would improve the world.
and google would be nationalised in an eyeblink as soon as they realised that google has enough computing power to do simulation of nuclear weapons:) possibly in realtime !
you could of course always switch to a different license and continue distribution. The GPL is not the *only* license that you can distribute open source software under.
I'm beginning to feel uncomfortable with the amount of clout they have and their new 'commercial' outlook on things.
If - as someone remarked - google goes public that is not the same as google being owned by th e public. It simply means that there will be that much more pressure on them to make cash. Buying stock in an IPO is not to be equated with supporting that company, it simply gives them cash to pursue their business in return for a small piece of the pie.
It would be nice if there was a public - not for profit - alternative to google.
what matters to 'outsiders' is whether they have a *chance* of winning a court case, not whether they have any real ip.
Since the courts are known to be a version of vegas (where the amount of cash you can burn can stack the deck for or against you) this has (from an investors point of view) some merit.
The best indicator of how many investors believe that SCO has a chance is it's stock price.
Meanwhile the evil empire sits back and laughs, whatever the outcome for sco, win or lose they will win.

That's because research is usually either classified or not 'sexy'. The fact that you don't hear about it all the time is because if there is nothing to announce the researchers are happier researching than writing press releases ('sorry nothing yet').
Samba is probably one of the largest driving forces enabling people to migrate away from windows servers. It's a cornerstone of lots of offices that I have visited.
This pretty much formalizes the situation that already exists. Also, in other countries there is a large trend towards a fixed monthly salary, instead of an hourly wage. That's a knife that cuts both ways though, it's pretty hard to get overtime paid under such an agreement, unless your employer specifically orders you to come in after hours.
After reading all the fud from SCO, MS (check out that ad at the top of this page, it has the 'linux TCO is 10x higher than MS server 2003) I have decided to join the battle.

go and read:
Greg Bear
William Gibson (you already knew that)
Terry Pratchett (more humorous, but nice)
"the light of other days" (forgot the author)
there's some really good stuff in there.
A friend and I trade our 'best sf' books, fortunately fair use still allows that (but I'm beginning to wonder for how long). If the goons get their way fair use on other media could go out the window too, let's see:
This book is sold under the following EULA:
You may read this book *once*. Upon reading the last page of the book you agree to destroy it. You may not discuss the contents of this book in private or in public, nor shall you lend it to someone else or give it away, other than unopened and unread.:)

let's hope so.
One thing is sure though, the fud won't end with SCO's demise

If not that would be the first time that a trojan writer puts his real world address out for all to see.
In the windows world people don't even expect to be able to see the source code.
and sign up ! these people are doing good things.

Don't forget that in the US MS was convicted as well.
The fact that they are convicted twice won't change a thing until they actually *PAY* the fine.
I'd like one to get rid of some vermin around my house.
Time to beef up my tinfoil hat I guess !
It's amazing what ways governments find to waste money. This guy must be laughing all the way to the bank at the end of every month.
Probably the reasoning goes something like this:
If we start this when it happens it's too late, so lets start it now.
Also makes me wonder if the rest of the world is in on this. Shouldn't we elect this guy ??
vrml is a great tool for raytracing and the like, but it would not serve as a cad-cam file format.
are only good for small change...

I really needed that for all that spam...

Yes, it's war, and microsoft is not above recruiting the enemy's best lieutenants.
The lightning speed with which AOL makes new technology available to their users has always amazed me !

I'd happily contribute cash to a publicly funded and publicly run search engine.
Anyone game ?
Pity, that's the wrong time of the year to come out with this, it would have been a smash hit !
