Well, did you see any signs when Microsoft started a browser war against the de facto standard Netscape browser back in the old days? I mean, who would have believed back then that Microsoft would be able to beat Netscape in browser war?
or that google was going to defeat yahoo in the search engine war.
Bandwidth is capped now. Realistically, I haven't been able to get 100k/s downstream for a long, long time (from sites with very generous bandwidth).
Their service is very flaky. Very often, I can't ping past the firewall
Their customer support stinks. Talk to two different reps, and you will get different answers about what the problem is, what they have already done, and what they are doing
They want to charge more for the existing flaky service, and charge less for a reduced version
I'm glad that I'm moving out of the area and don't have to deal with them again. If I was still here, I'd switch to DSL.
Not all religions believe in a soul (in the manner you have described). Many monistic religions believe in a universal soul which all creatures have (eg. advaitic hinduism). Some don't believe in a soul at all (zen buddhism).
So, although this might disprove western religion (which it won't), it won't be able to touch the philosophy of eastern religions, which have been around for a much longer time.

ummmm. c# is nothing but a wrapper around.NET. So are vb7, vc7, and every other component in visual studio.NET.
Also, it would be to MS's benefit to fork as soon as possible, so no-one has a chance to change their license from GPL to "GPL minus MS" or "GPL with a fully Open Source disto."
"GPL minus MS" is not GPL. Should MS fork Linux and add all of the features you want, great. Applaud them. When is the last time Linux said no to companies willing to pay developers to work on Linux?
Just because a company is called Microsoft does not mean that the company cannot contribute to Linux. The more, the merrier.
And the nice thing about the linux community is that it will be difficult (albeit not impossible) for microsoft to pay (and be willing to pay) for as many developer hours as there are volunteers willing to spend, simply to fork all the existing GPL code out there.

The sequence (raw data) can be downloaded. Researchers are free to use the data, and publish papers based on the raw data. Commercial users must license the data for commercial use.
Yes, it would be good if the data were in the public domain. However, it is available to researchers, and nature has agreed to keep a copy of the data in escrow because of the particular situation

All the censorware really has to do is read through each page and look at each picture before putting it on screen to figure out whether it is porn or not. It takes some skill to know the difference between an artistic nude and a XXX pix
No two human beings can agree on what's artistic and whats porn. The word "offensive" is a very personal word. Different people find different things offensive.....its a matter of culture, upbringing, and taste. This is why these kinds of software will _always_ be a poor replacement for the parent who wishes to shield his children.
afaik, us coders don't have artistic talents of any kind. getting them to program an artistic recognition ai is a waste of time. The last time people tried to be artistic, we ended up with the "paperclip";-)
If you read the article, you would have noticed that the unices were compared for file-sharing, web serving etc. This article was comparing distros for the server market. These corporations are going to want liability for their product, and enterprise level support, which debian does not provide at this time. But If i were a corporation, I'd go with a contract from LinuxCare anyway, so this wouldn't matter.

You are a dumbass. A GPL'ed program can be redistributed anywhere, anyhow. Therefore, slashdot is becoming a haven for free, GPL-software. OH NO! We all know GPL is a virus./. needs a virus scanner!!!
IMO, DNS should be depreceated in favour of new, more intelligent protocols. Just like linux, these should be adopted by the open-source community because it is technically superior and simply makes more sense (tm). Adopt them, and the rest of the world will follow.
As has been pointed out numerous times, this is bigger than normal symbolic links.
However, most systems have a decent number of i/o related tasks.Everytime a block is written/changed, blocks are compared and symlinks are made? This has got to be nothing but bloat.
It looks like this is only at the os level. i.e. you can't manually make symlinks
I can understand 10% in saved space, but more than that? The space required for the implementation of this scheme itself has to be substantial.
I must admit that is some cool research material, tho.
Maybe we should have a central site, where we can mention which patches (kernel/user space) should be applied to get the most out of insert_your_hardware_here. I would rather see people running Redhat than Redhat_clone. Support the vendors that do the work!
Also, you'd expect there would be a lag time for bug fixes et al in these distros.
I'd rather see these people maintain a good HOWTO on optimizing a linux distribution for their hardware. This way, people running debian or slackware can get the benifits of these kinds of hardwares too.
NSI is one of the worst companies that i have ever seen. They are handed a commodity, and they abuse it, and their customers. The gentlemen who wanted races.com was a guaranteed customer. They botched it.
Now that there are alternative registrars, people should start boycotting them.....wait a minute. They don't care about their customers. This probably wouldn't bother them.
I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely left holes like this into the sytem to show that there should only be one company incharge of the system....but i think they are effectively proving that such a company should not be them.

Harry Potter is not targetted towards the tech-savvy geek audience. 5 year old kids don't know how to pirate dvd's.
"somebody will surely travel..."
"this could only be successful for so long..."
This is as pitiful as papers that include the words "it is trivial to prove" and those that don't use double inclusion.
When 3 experts in a field spend a day _trying_ to prove something "trivial" and conclude that it's probably wrong, we have a problem.
I'm glad that I'm moving out of the area and don't have to deal with them again. If I was still here, I'd switch to DSL.
Your bias really shows.
whister and blackcomb are the names of mountain peaks in BC (near the redmond campus). longhorn is the name of a pub between whistler and blackcomb :-)

I wasn't commenting about this particular release. There are most certainly a lot of goodies there.
pilot
And why, pray tell, is that?
A good, stable release with new features is good, but these days Linux releases are a few too many, a few too often.
I keep using that Debian "unstable" distribution. It was called Hamm, Slink, Potato and then Woody. Stop the politiking. Make up yer minds already :-)
pilot
stable -> extremely stable. As stable as VA servers
unstable -> bleeding edge packages
Just like new kernel series, it'll need some time, and people playing with it to get all the kinks worked out.
