Are you hoping someday when you tell someone what a jerk he/she is for driving such a wasteful vehicle that person will say, "Wow, you're right! I'll go right out and trade this in for a Prius!" instead of "Mind your own f___ing business!"
Exactly! Sooner or later it will become socially repugnant to own an SUV.
8000 pounds of SUV in the hands of a soccer mom who couldn't even drive a minivan straight is a fatal accident waiting to happen. Sure, the soccer mom might be ok, but the 4 teenagers in a Civic? No, you don't have any "right" to drive a big ass vehicle when it has the potential to kill.
That Dual Xeon rig being driven by some script kiddie doesnt have the potential to kill you and your family in a split second. Driving an SUV is indicative of a total lack of disregard for your fellow motorists, and in the case of men, indicative of a small prick.
Yea, some people need big trucks/SUVs. Big rig drivers have to have a commercial drivers license, which require much more trainging and testing than a regular drivers license. I wouldn't mind SUVs so much if the fuckwits driving them actually had the requisite skill (and weren't yakking on their cell phones).
And actually, the REAL solution is a speed limit based on kinetic energy. If all the fucking H2s around here could only go 45 miles an hour and had to stay in the right hand lane I would care a lot less - as I zip by on my motorcycle at 120 =D
There is not one car in the world that will require higher octane gas because of timing.
Modern engines have a knock sensor, and can retard the timing on the fly to reduce detonation
Adjusting the timing affects when the pressure peak occurs. Advancing the timing (making the spark happen earlier before top dead center) too much can certainly cause knocking, which can often be resolved by running higher octane gas. Many chip or ECU upgrades adjust the timing, and because of this have a requirement of higher octane gas.
Informative my nuts, get your story straight.

Heh. I do computer work for a local German bar/restaurant. Heaven I tell you!
I used to laugh at the thought that Micros had an NT version available (we used the higher end UNIX version at my employeratthetime). Now I revel in it!
Yes, the Repubs and Democrats are both wh0res to corporate interests. At least the interests the Dems wh0re for don't have a clear financial interest in dragging us into uneccessary wars.
If you really think that Bush has your interests at heart then you're a gay-hating asshole, and as such, I hope you enjoy burning in hell with your other hate-spewing cohorts.
And Bush and Congress are both Republican controlled. It isn't like Bush came up with this idea. It is a talking point that was concieved by a comittee. The goals of Bush and the GOP are one and the same.
There is a lot he could do if he was more than a figurehead. ignore the man behind the curtain
At least in the IT sector, MCSE's who hate computers just spread their hate around. I'm one of the 1 in 7 who loves IT and loves computers, as is my coworker, and it never ceases to amaze me how many of our guests tell us personally that we do a great job. Far better than their IT departments, at least.
It isn't a "sin", but it is a bad career move, and makes everyone else think of "Nick Burns" when they think of their company's computer guy.
When you can build me a small form factor PC that can drive an HDTV and surround sound system, all for under $200USD, then you can make such a claim =)
While I agree about the developer thing to an extent (farking EA, why no Live support?), they have some solid games that just wouldn't be possible on any other console.
I had a WD 120GB die on me, and I'm positive it was the controller board (pulled the board off and it looked like a burnt trace to a flash chip). I swapped boards with a friend who ordered the exact same drive the exact same day, same rev number, same model number, same build date. Didn't work.
Then again, I've gotten an older laptop drive to work again by swapping boards. But the anecdotal evidence suggests your parent poster was correct about newer drives. I'd add that I did all of the above in the lab at my employer, on an anti static work mat, with an anti static wrist strap.
Yes, there are no ads if you subscribe. I understand your gripes (I only allow through cookies explicitly), but this article is worth a read.
Drifting OT, Salon usually runs deals where if you subscribe you get a free magazine subscription or two also. I got a year of Wired free, for example, and 6 months of Mother Jones free when I signed up a friend. Good stuff!
Just a sidenote, Vonage may or may not have a POP in your area code. The area I live in has 2 area codes, and when I moved to Vonage I had to take a number in the newer of the two area codes. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.
I've been fairly impressed with Vonage's service, but the quality is similar to a cellphone... It sounds good, but you can tell there is a fair amount of latency. Sure beats paying my local telco monopoly, though. =)
I had the same problem with two Oxford 911 based Firewire enclosures. Terribly frustrating, though I only lost a few files to it... But I found when I put a 120GB WD 7200RPM "special edition" drive in it, the problems went away. Runs terribly hot though.
Plenty of us are young enough to just be feeling the effects of globalization. Plenty of us are young enough that we're only now politically aware.
And while globalization has "helped" America (some say Wal-mart's rampant outsourcing was a large part of the late 90s boom), the long term ramifications are only now being looked at. Who will buy the cheap DVD players and Nike's when noone has a job?
Those bombs Clinton lobbed into Iraq kept him disarmed, and finished the job Bush 1 started. A better question: What good did Dubya do? He's gotten us tangled up in a war we can't win, and is getting our soldiers killed every day. It makes me sound like a heartless bastard - that's just the Republican in me coming out - but how exactly did Saddam present a threat to the United States? He didn't. And while I agree the Iraq is better off without him (until some rabid religious zealots come to power), we'd go broke trying to remove every despot from power.
And yes, many corporate scandels happened under Clinton. That problems stems from the lack of ethics present in business today, and the general believe in this country that a company is only beholden to its shareholders. However, you can't deny that this administration is taking unprecedented measures on behalf of its corporate sponsors (gutting the Clean Air Act, energy policy shaped by energy industry leaders, current mad cow fiasco).
Bush is a bad Republican, period. As you said, he spends money like a drunken sailor, and obviously only has interest in what benefits his campaign donors. How one could excoriate Clinton in this light is ridiculous, as the OP pointed out...
Does it matter if you/they aren't the only ISP/gas station in town if you all have to buy from the same supplier? And what happens when that supplier opens their own gas station, and sells gas at a loss just to put everyone else out of business? I see the broadband market as a similar situation.
At the risk of going off on a political tirade, I was simply saying that since telecom is a utility, and one that has been subsidized greatly by taxpayers, it needs to be regulated in a manner that is beneficial to all.
parent seemed to think that those of us who want to use the "high-speed" access we've been sold to its fullest are just selfish idiots with no idea of the cost of bandwidth. I'd disagree. So... uh... there.. *raspberry*
1. Buy Xbox 2. Install $5 flash chip with hacked bios 3. Load XBox Media Player/Center, pointed to SMB/CIFS share 4. Profit?
If you want an open box that can stream just about any format you throw at it, you can't beat a hacked Xbox. It takes work, but these days that is the only way around the upcoming DRM nightmare.
And my Xbox has a remote, just like any other appliance. Most people can figure it out without any prompting from me. Huzzah!

SUVs have a much higher center of gravity and much more weight. Think before you open your mouth, fucktard.

Man, and reading further down it looks like I'm not the only one...
Then you've never stripped a live telephone wire with your teeth when you were a kid.
I assure you you're wrong about the voltage. Cisco has 48VDC options on much of their equipment for a reason.
