And who the hell wants to browse the web on a 14.4 modem?

I did for a long time when I was an impoverished student and couldn't afford a faster modem (cue violins).

Actually, it wasn't all that bad unless the site had a lot of java or flash in it.

  2. Re:Revolutionary on Commodore BBSes Return using the Internet. · · Score: 3, Insightful

You really need to look into this more, a 33Mhz system with a 14.4 modem actually has a lot of uses. It'd make a decent (but very low bandwith) home firewall, for one.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's not useful!

Take a look at this picture and the cat. Now look at your desktop PC and imagine a cat standing next to it. The nanode really is that small.

I have to yell at my cat at least half a dozen times a day for using my either PC or keyboard as a launch pad (the PC is located next to the table with his food dish). If I got one of these, he'd start using it as a toy, that'd be even more annoying...!

Microsoft may be a monstrosity who write crap software, but they have got excellent marketing skills and are largely responsible (but by no means exclusively) for the number of home PC's being sold today.

As a Christian, I found the whole movie hilarious - it's good to laugh at yourselves every once in a while. Nothing offensive about that movie at all if you ask me. Didn't stop my parents having a fit when they found out I'd seen it though :)

I wonder if the re-release will generate the same controvesy this time around as it did in the 1970's. Somehow I doubt we'll need to have the organised bus trips to other towns to see the movies cause your local theatre has banned it.

  6. Re:Wide-format, taking long enough! on Fifty Years of Color Television · · Score: 4, Interesting

Wide format is slowly coming along, about 40% of the shows I watch are broadcast in widescreen right now. My biggest beef at the moment is the number of broadcasters who slap a watermark right in the middle of the black lines thus confusing my TV so it can't stretch the image properly. Yes, I can use one of the manual presets but then it chops off the edges.

My Phillips TV does a really good job of automatically stretching the screen when it detects widescreen.

The remaining 30% (and getting larger as time goes on it seems) is dealing with more and more paperwork, meetings and the occasional user who is not only stupid (*all* users are stupid) but argumentative as well.

So, 70% of the time I'm happy.

By contrast, a few years ago I spent 12 months in a complete career switch working for a steel company. Lots of dirty outdoor work and coming hope with little bits of steel imbedded in my arms. I actually really enjoyed it and lost my pale geeky look for a while :-) However, the pay wasn't very good and working outside in the pouring rain isn't much fun either. I'm happier back in the IT industry but it was a great experience.

It was so fast it was over in the time it took me to look down to pop another taste piece of chicken breast (sweet irony, eh?) on my fork. They show far worse things on MTV, every single day but no one complained. Go figure.

OK so it was wrong, she shouldn't have shown her boob (waldrobe malfunction my ass, attention grabbing idea more like) on national TV during a family show but please, get over it!

My personal opinion is that the US should follow the UK rule, have censorship until 9 pm and then tone it down. It's the parents responsibility to limit what children watch at a time when those that are young and impressional should be asleep anyway.

You can simulate that on earth too, wait for the ISS to fly over your house, point your camera at it and leave the shutter open for a few minutes.

I had this problem up until 2.6.1 - major skipping with anything audio related. After 2.6.2 everything works great. It may just be your audio driver hasn't been updated for 2.6 yet so your best bet for now is to use the old OSS drivers and wait for the ALSA driver to get updated. That's what fixed it for me.

    1. Fish and Chips, actually the best part of this are the chips - REAL potatoes deep fried in lard! The fish (cod or haddock usually) is also deep fried in batter. Most Fish and Chip shops server sausages, hamburgers and, for the very very brave, some have snickers bars deep fried in batter.

    2. Roast dinners. Go to a local tavern on Sunday, enjoy some of the best roast meat you've ever had. Make sure you try the Yorkshire Pudding.

    3. Toad in the Hole. Yorkshire pudding with sausages. The Americans have something similar but only about half as good called "pigs in the blanket".

    4. Cornish Pasties. Minced beef with vegetables (and spices if you're lucky) wrapped in flaky pastry. Yum!

Curry is becoming well known as the True National Dish of England, even though it's not technically truly English (who cares, anyway?). The Indian food you eat in England is the best in the world.

Case in point, which has been getting a lot of coverage in FL recently. A man was shot and killed by police because they thought he was a fugitive, it turns out he wasn't the man they where after - he was a law abiding citizen. Reason he was shot: he ran from the police when they tried to pull him over, when they finally caught up to him he reached for something in his pocket that the office thought was a gun (turned out it wasn'). I'm sorry the guy's dead, but if he'd just stopped and showed his ID he'd have been sent on his way and two families lives wouldn't be ruined.
