I must applaud your attitude here, I do agree with it - at least in principle. What happened to the Columbia was a freak accident and is very unlikely to happen again. However, the US public, the US congress and most other reasonable people are never going to let it go to chance without at least some contingency plans should this million-to-one chance happen a third time (think: Challenger).
It looks like it was a damaged tile that broke off. I am NOT going to believe this for definite until the NASA investigation proves it but assuming that is what happened then NASA need to figure out away to fix the tile in orbit, implement the plan ASAP and get those shuttles back where they belong. So, if I was NASA here's what I would be doing right now:
1. Figuring out how to fix the shuttle body whilst in Orbit, since I know 99% of my upcoming missions are to the ISS I know that I can utilise that if the worst does happen.
2. Putting more sensors on the shuttle, implementing better monitoring of the shuttle during launch (those grainy images just don't cut it) and orbit.
3. Lobbying the heck out of congress to get more funding so we can build a better, safer, less costly shuttle.
The longer we wait to put the shuttles back into orbit, the harder it will become. The US government would just love us to mothball the manned space program entirely, which would be a great shame.
From what I've seen in MAME, the best way to make money in Japan is build a fairly basic Mahjong simulator that has lots of naked women in it. This is just an observation.
Maybe Microsoft should take that into consideration!
Our local Wal-Mart supercenter has an excellent arcade, constantly being updated and very reasonable prices (for an arcade, at least). Cruisin' USA is 50c, the new Nascar sit-down is $1.
The local Simon Mall also has an excellent arcade, it's not being killed by the prices though but by the little brats that keep vandalising the machines:(
I wonder how long it will take MAME to have an emulator for the X-Box? arcade machine?:-)
Remember those horrible CUB monitors that Acorn supplied with BBC and the early Archimedes range in the 80's? I was once blown several feet backwards from the desk just by accidentally touching the metal surround.
The cases for these monitors where completely metal, which had the effect of making them fantastic conductors of static electricity.
You buy a stack of the discs and burn songs onto them at the music store, then they only let you play them x number of times, a la SD. Or maybe you buy music CDs with the music already in the ROM part, but the R/W part is updated each time you play it.
That would only work if:
1. You had to use software to play the songs and, 2. You where playing it on a CD-RW
It's technically difficult and expensive. Also, with current technology CD-RW's are only good for a finite number of rewrites.
Either way, I bet the RIAA is already researching it!:)
Remember them, I still have a HUGE pile of them (all overwritten of course). Not to mention all the other ISP's that spammed me over the years. Those things are probably collectors items now.
I expect and anticipate (but not necessarily hope) that AOL will use this Technology, as will plenty of other companies. If the CDR-ROM manufactures have any business sense they'll bundle free CDR-ROM's with their writers that have advertising/free trials for other companies - especially ISP's. The resulting revenue will be very profitable for the manufacture.
Maybe I shouldn't be telling the Slashdot community this! *quickly jumping on bandwagaon*
When you turn 19 you will, for some really stupid reason, decide that long hair is cool and looks good on you.
It doesn't. Your passport photo is an embarassment that you will live with for 10 years.
No official announcement on Dolly's website

Goodbye, Dolly

· Score: 1
It's interesting to note, that although most of the major news sites have picked up on this, no announcement has been put on the "official" site. That's just not right.
I wonder if Dolly ever knew how important she was? I wonder what her view on all the excitement she generated would be?
I waited almost 18 months for my adjustment interview that approved me for a green card. I'm still waiting for that precious piece of plastic a whole 12 months later which means I will be visting my local field office soon and queuing for hours on end just to get another "temporary evidence of lawful residence" stamp in my passport.
When I got my drivers license it took me less than an hour and my license was printed in 10 minutes. It's the same technology.
Rather than wasting time on this pointless new system the INS should be spending money on getting itself organised, and chasing down illegal immigrants.
See footnote, I never said that you where guaranteed a better job with a college degree I said it helps. Companies are much more likely to hire someone with a college degree than without, regardless of experience. It's sad, but true.
I must applaud this school, and Red Hat for their efforts. I wish they did this 9 years ago when I was at school! I know of several schools in my area offering MCSE and Cisco certifications as well.
I hope that the school is encouraging the kids to use this new knowlege as a jumpstart into college. Kids: $30,000 a year may sound like a lot when you're living with your parents but it's nothing once you have a mortgage and hungry mouths to feed! With a college degree you can command a much higher salary [1].
A college placement is much easier to come by if you can say you obtained Linux certs in school and it'll give you a huge advantage over the other students.
In writing this comment I have had one thought though. When are High Schools going to start teaching kids how to read, write and do arithmetic? I know plenty of people WITH high school dipolmas who can't spell, can barely read and need a calculator for basic arithmetic.
[1] I'm also hoping that by the time current high school students graduate college the economical climate will have improved and jobs will become available for them.
According to our son's pediatrician it's the babies natural reaction if he has some milk stuck in his throat. If hiccuping fails, they'll sneeze. If that fails, well... you'd better have a change of clothes handy.:)
He's very cute when he has hiccups, his eyes go wide with every hiccup and he just looks around wondering what caused that funny noise.
Star Trek has sucked terribly since they got rid of Deep Space Nine - it was the best Star Trek because... wait for it... it had ORIGINAL PLOTS!
ST: Enterprise is just a complete waste of time and will be axed very soon because it just plain sucks.
I think people are just bored with Star Trek, it's turned into one big soap opera. Bring back the TNG crew or restart DSN (difficult I know), figure out some original plots, for gods sake reanimate Data and the ratings will go back up.
Because it works. 233's have been around for almost 10 years now and are a proven technology. You don't trust multi-billion dollar spacecraft to brand new components. Anyway, for what they are using it for a P233 with 128Mb is actually a little overpowered.
Please bear in mind that the computers that control the shuttle use technology from the 70's and 80's.
A large flat headed screwdriver will defeat pretty much any lock in my building, and in most other offices too, without causing any damage to the door or the lock itself (no, I'm not telling the kiddies how - you should be able to figure it out for yourself. Why should I need to mess with trying to forge a master key?
Anyone trying to store anything valuable behind a door that uses a regular lock in this day and age is a fool.
My wife owns a Honda Civic, it's the bog standard 4 cylinder DX model. It's fuel effecient, it keeps my family safe and it gets my lovely wife where she needs to go. 22K miles so far and it's not had any major problems. So far as I'm concerned it's just a nice family car.
Every single day we will be driving and see some other moron in a Civic with those ludicrous big mufflers and a silly looking spoiler. Pet hate of mine. Yes.
So, what's the deal with Civics? Really easy to modify or just fashionable amongst the kid racers of the world?
Kids with big mufflers pretending to be drag racers aside (they usually Darwinize themselves within a few months, or simply grow out of it) I've seen some really impressive Civic mods, like the one in the article. I'd be interested to hear comments from those mature Civic owners.
Kids with big mufflers and silly spoilers need not reply.
My earliest memory is lying in my pram (stroller) aged about 6 months and being pushed around our neighbourhood by my mother. I have snapshots of memories from my first 6 months but that is my first vivid memory.
My son remembers his time spent in intensive care (first 3 weeks of his life), or at least can associate certain faces with his time there (if he sees one of the Doctors who treated him he starts to cry, expecting a needle). I'm also convinced he has nightmares about it. He is only 2 months old so it is probably mostly just instinct. It will be interesting to see if he remembers in a few years.
This Morrison guy is clearly bonkers. Who would make a film out of disintegrating film stock? It's like filming a compost heap.
On the other hand, in the same way everyone (go on, admit it) slows down to take a look at a major road accident you just can't resist seeing how bad it really is.
I, for one will be tuning into Sundance when it airs - just for the pure morbid curiousity.
Having to enable pop-up adds in Mozilla is a big pain for those websites that refuse to load unless I do so. Fortunately, it is only a very small number of web site thus far.
Yes, I recognise this is how web sites make their money but a discreet advert in the corner of your site is much better than slamming a window in front of your site.
..Is to just freakin put the Atlantis into space.

Too much hassle, it expires in 6 years and I'll be a citizen of a different country (hopefully) by then so why bother?
