  1. Something similar on Google Letting Users Rank Search Results · · Score: 1

There is a site that does something just like this called Coolhomepages.com. It's not a search engine, but it has sites broken down into different categories (DHTML, Flash, Typographic, Retro, etc.) and visitors can rate the sites from 1 to 10 stars, or submit sites they feel deserving. A lot of the web designers I work with go to the site and look around for "inspiration."

Man, you sound really bitter. Not being friendly with the people in your office will hurt you more. If you come off as just a cold hearted bastard, who lives, breathes, and sleeps work, they're more likely to sabotage any chance you have at advancement or raise. What does a manager want more? A team that works well with each other, respects each other, and produces code/prodcuts/whatever to better the company, or a bunch of thoughtless individuals who only care how many zeros are in their salary?

Office relationships are fine, as long as they aren't on the same team. I've been at my job two years now, and there have been 3 office relationships of a romantic nature. The first two worked because for couple A, one was a Web developer and the other was in finance. For couple B, one was a secretary and the other a sys admin. It was the couple that were both in document management that split, and one ended up quiting because they spent all day at work together and then when home together, and once things went south, it just bombed. The other two couples are still together, and one of them just got engaged.

  5. Attitude Adjustment on Friendships in the IT Workplace? · · Score: 1

Here at my office we have regular (usually once or twice a week) 'attitude adjustment'. Generally, it consists of the people on our team going out to a bar, and bitching about customers. Whoever is in the worst mental shape gets all his/her drinks bought for them.

Once our boss heard us talking about going to a bar for 'AA' and thought we were a bunch of alcoholics who had fallen off the wagon.

  6. Re:Harry not cool in 7th grade... on Review: Harry Potter · · Score: 1

The thing to remember about 7th graders is that they are really starting to get into the whole "What will other people think of me?" mind-set. A lot of them were probably unwilling to say they wish to see it just because they feared ridicule. If you were to isolate each one, tell them you would not reveal their answers, and then asked them if they wished to see the Harry Potter flick, I'd think you would find a lot more of them would say yes.

The thing you have to remember about this movie is that is the first of 7 movies. Rowling says there will be 7 books, so there will almost definitely be 7 movies. They are developing things for the movies yet to follow, not just this film. That's probably the reason for the long start.

1 - PS2 is known as a more adult gaming platform. I just bought a PS2 and finding games for my 9 year old daughter is interesting. Maby MS can capitalize it if they are smart.

Generally, of the three main console offerings right now, Nintendo offers the most kid friendly titles, notably Pokemon. So perhaps that would be a better option for your daughter.

I wouldn't be surprised if either Sony or Microsoft buys out Nintendo for it's games and franchises. Despite lagging behind somewhat on the hardware, Nintendo, IMHO, has the biggest, most recognizable game franchises ever in Mario Bros., Zelda, Metroid, and Pokemon. Either of these companies would do well to step when Nintendo falters (I hope not - I grew up on the NES) and leverage their titles against the other system. That is what sells consoles: the games that are only available on one platform.

You're absolutely correct. Not to long ago, when I was in high school, my Advanced Biology teacher wanted to show us Outbreak so we could see what was true in the movie about viruses (which we were studying at the time) and what they had taken artistic license with. But first, since it was R rated, everyone had to have a signed permission slip. This was a class of 11th and 12th graders. Even the 17 and 18 year olds had to have a permission slip, even though they could go rent it themselves or go see it in the theater. Schools would be an absolute great place for this technology.

The best way, I feel, for a good fun game is for everyone NOT to have their own equipment. Just go to a field, rent equal markers and rigs, and then just go do whatever. If that is laying down a ton of paint for cover-fire, or sniping people trying to take your flag, it emphasizes tactics and skill over some 12 year old with rich parents and his fully tripped out marker firing 20 rounds a second. I played with my brothers and their friends for a while, but stopped after a few sessions when it came down to which team could spray the most paint before their barrels got clogged. Just totally lacking in fun.

Despite the extreme convience of taking my courses on-line, I feel as though I don't recieve as comprehensive instruction as I did in the classroom. These course materials, while certainly not identical, could certainly provide me with another point of view, and quite possibly giving me a better grasp of the material.

Gran Turismo 3 is the first game that was solely developed using PSX2 code. How long did they probably have the pre-reqs and all this information you need to develop that game? 25. The whole package on Storytelling in Computer Games · · Score: 1

The difference between a technically sound game and an instant classic is in the storytelling.

I have to disagree somewhat. What makes a game a classic is the whole package. Think of a game as a girl (I know its hard for some of you). First, you look for intelligence/good personality (story-telling). Ok, she's smart. But is she pretty (good graphics)? Yep. Ok. Is she good in bed (game play)? Damn straight. Ok. Any of these three traits are desirable, but wouldn't you rather have all three when picking a wife/girlfriend? Of course you would. Same with games. It's the games that have the best combination of storytelling, graphics, and gameplay that are the classics.
