Find me a push over like that with a PhD in any scientific field and I'll give you a nickel.
I know a whole lot of beta-scientists who couldn't care less about computers. I even know some who love Word, and have written their Ph.D. thesis in it 'because it's the best tool for the job.'
I myself have written my thesis in WordPerfect since I didn't like the way Word crashed on me every 5 minutes (this was in 1998), and the way Word handles pictures and formulas. Had I known LaTeX better then I would have used that because although it's a bit harder to use than WordPerfect, it pruduces files that I most probably still can read and use after 10 years.
I studied chemistry, moved to micromechanics, and now I suddenly find myself doing 'nanotechnology', because I spend my time making submicrometer-sized structures for a living. For 'nanophotonics', no less! And we make structures that should work in the infrared (typical wavelengths around 1.5 um)! So a better term would be microphotonics. Suddenly every branch of science has the phrase 'nano' slapped to it. What the hell is the difference between nanoglue and normal glue? Hell, I even heard the term 'nanochemistry' once! Is there any other chemistry? I mean, hyping technology to get more money from the suits for research is unfortunately necessary, but this whole nano thing is getting more and more ridiculous.
I'm in the same position. I only use Windows to play (adventure) games. Last weekend I decided to buy myself a 24" iMac once the new ones are out. That already was a pretty good deal, but with the new Parallels it suddenly is a lot more attractive. You get a screen that costs around 1000,- and around it you have a computer with WiFi, bluetooth, a reasonably good videocard, nice harddrive, good sound and beautiful exterior for 1200,-! The harddrive is big enough to put OSX, Linux and Windows on it, and with Parallels 3.0 I won't even have to reboot the computer to play my games! What more do I want?
And the topic gives us a nice insight in the mind of our [insert appropriate overlord here]. (S)He/it must have thought: "What do I hate? I know: cold! I shiver even thinking of it. And menthol! Yuch, that must be the foulest substance on the planet. Let's give the sentient being in development a sensor that can detect both cold and menthol then!"
That's funny, I have a MBP (typing on it right now) and I don't like the keyboard much. And the screen. It more than makes up for those with the OS and everything else though. I'm very happy with the machine.
I have never come across a laptop with a good keyboard. Portability of a laptop comes at a high price. You lose a good screen, good keyboard, good video card... the list goes on. If you want an ergonomic computer, buy a desktop.
That is a beautiful laptop. And apart from the Macs, there aren't many beautiful laptops out there IMO. If I were Intel I would lose the screen on the outside. Though it raises the WOW factor a whole lot, it's not practical when traveling, especially if you carry the laptop around like it's a purse as shown on the first picture.
I was always surprised how bad the colours on my MBP look compared to the same colours on my 19" CRT. Now I know why they look so bad. Here is a better article about this case. Both articles don't mention iBooks and Powerbooks. Do they use 'normal' screens? I had an iBook once and I always thought the iBook had a (much) better screen than the MBP.
Yes, if the medical technologies and treatments we have today were developed earlier they could have saved people who are now dead. Isn't that obvious??!
O yes, that one. Although I like barebones phones, this one is a bit too bare for me. I'll wait for the next model. Hopefully that one has bluetooth and a bit better screen. I don't care about mp3, colors and a camera, but I like to be able to read SMS's without troubles, and that is mainly where the Motorola F3 falls short.
I've never even seen a device with black and white e-paper in it, and now they smugly announce the colour version. Why aren't the B&W e-paper devices more popular? Does it have to do with the fact that they don't work very well, or that they are extremely expensive?
Wow man you must be at least as old as me to post that!

I am a tiny bit confused by your story. Mind you, not a nano-bit! A tiny bit. And Amused too, by the way :)

Yep, I stumble across those often too on my MacBook Pro. The only way to get rid of them seems to be rebooting.
Offtopic: nice blog ender-!

OK you got me there, but the reason why they should lose the screen are unchanged. It will get damaged during travelling.

Looks like it. I posted this one in a comment here. That's plagiarism, that is! Oh well, I got a +4 Interesting ;-)
What is it with all the name-calling on /. lately? We're sliding towards the Digg-level here... Please moderate your language people!
Speaking of Disney and copyrights, I found a nice movie about copyrights made from small parts of Disney cartoons on BoingBoing, here.
Virtual reality? At age 4 people don't even know there is a real reality! Get real! ;)

It's the same in OSX but for some strange reason nobody seems to care about that, although it's just as annoying.
Darn, I even read the fine article but the 'of the same sex' part didn't register. Thanks.
Do women with more than average testosterone levels also like angry faces?
Why not create a company just for this?

That scares me no end. I can't imagine that technology having no bad side-effects. No way I'm going to let them use that on me.
