Yes I agree. Infact I think Paramount shouldn't have thrown or given away the whole set, but donated it to the Smithsonian. Star Trek is one thing that inspires many people to do things for equal rights, space exploration, and a whole host of other things. I think it's a crime that most of whats left is a single chair if they pitched the whole set or gave it away.
I'd like to be able to go to a museum and show any kids I have in the future that chair. They'll look at me like I'm crazy because of the latest Star Trek that looks super real, but it's nice to say, "This is where it all began."
George Lucas pimps out Jarjar who somehow got reprogrammed to sound like the hooker from Full Metal Jacket. (Not enough beers in the world for that one)
I see all the super stars driving around in a puke green 77 Chevy Malabu Classic 4 door with a hug dent in the right rear and a rusted out trunk. (My first dream car)
Life Styles of the Rich and Famous features this months cardboard mansion. (.COM era workers vacation home)
Instead of seeing how record braking the box office numbers were, I see instead no lines at the theatres and huge traffic jams on the internet.
The Episode 2 cast is working a McDonalds to make ends meat. (Something really scares me thinking about Samual L Jackson asking me if I would like fries with that after watching parts Pulp Fiction and Shaft.)
Didn't see AtoC or Spiderman. Don't really want to support an industry that wants to stomp on me through lobbying the government with my movie ticket money to take away fair use rights.
It's amazing how much disk space I recovered after uninstalling diablo, starcraft and everything else including other companies titles affiliated with Blizzards parent company after reading about bnetd getting the boot from Blizzard. Battlenet sux and this would have been a very welcome alternative. Warcraft 3? Not on my hard drives.
We may polute the planet so bad by then that this stuff will be the next Jolt Cola in 10,000 years. We're just setting up the next soda barron for that time period.
Ignoring hunting season, isn't carrier pigeon still the safest way to get the web for windows? Thats how I get my packets to my computer daily when I browse.
Interesting article, however if computers were to ever become that opressive I'd be like the guy who went to Gateway to fix his computer with a sledge hammer. The same would go for the CD player and any other electronic device that fits that view of the future.
They won't get my money with terms like that. The RIAA and MPAA havn't gotten a dime from me since the DMCA was enacted, I can do it. Can you?
Personally I like my games with less realism. I play them to avoid reality at times and let out pent up frustrations. I just think too much realism is wrong for games. There may come a time when certain people won't be able to tell VR from RL.
To clarify my references to realism it's not the phyiscs or fact that people have actual hair. My concerns would be simulating real life events in a game. If there are people like this in the world. Then there's definatly a need to take a step back and say are we doing too much to get realism if people act like this over fantasy games? Personally I'm a fan of games like Quake and Doom. Realism isn't what makes a game fun for me. It's the ability to make me come back to it again and again and not many game companies can do that like iD has.
Realism is good, but there may be some things that need looked out for in order to have it for games because of the less then stable members of society.
I heard the main characters were followed around by a cute little fairy named Cbdtpa who casts protection pixi dust on all the good little electronic devices. It was also rumored that this fairy locked up the infomus Packet Fairy and put new locks on her magic packets.:)
I personally find it less interesting because of advertisements. Banner ads and popups are the #1 reason to disable java script, uninstall macromedia's flash plugins, and use a browser like Lynx. I'm waiting to turn on my web browser one day and find a rerun of Hogan's Hero's playing. God I loved that show, SHHHHUUUUULLLTTZZZ!:)
I think it's great that Hubble is all fixed up. I also agree w/one poster about keeping it going till there is a better replacement. Look at the other probes and stuff we've launched that are still working today. Pioneer 10, Galileo, etc. I think it's only natural that we should keep Hubble flying as long as we can safely.
Regular service missions should extend it's life a little longer, especially since it's already had a heart transplant.
As far as NASA goes I think cleaning up wasted spending is important but not at the cost of exploration. Lord knows there might be a microbe or something on Mars that could cure cancer, aids, or some other nasty Earthly disease and it's just sitting up there waiting for us to get it. Or something could wipe out the entire population of Earth. We don't know though till we go there.
I also saw another comment that said the Chinese could go for Mars. Imagine that, reminds me of the day when the USSR was making a shot for the moon but America beat them to it. Perhaps it will take another challenging country to get America going again and we may ask ourselves afterward why we didn't take the initiative to begin with after finding something amazing.
If you really are concerned about what garbage like the SSSCA is going to do to you you need to do the following.
1. Stop supporting companies and media giants who support this kind abuse towards end users of their products. This means forgeting about the next coolest movie that comes out, the next coolest cd, dvd, etc. The more you buy from them the more they'll take YOUR MONEY and walk all over YOU!
2. Write your state senators and congressmen. Tell them you will stop buying products of the entertainment industry and technology industry if garbage like the SSSCA gets passed through. BACK UP YOUR STATEMENTS WITH ACTION!
3. If you have the money to do so, support organizations like the EFF or other companies or groups who fight this kind of crap off and look out for the general publics interests.
4. When they finally wise up, buy the products and give them positive reinforcement. Don't pirate software, don't pirate music or movies. Pay for it. And while they are still pushing laws like the SSSCA don't pirate their crap either. That just gives them a reason to go on.
Now that I've ranted and raved there are two more things I'd like to say.
1. This needs to get out in the general publics eye. It needs to be in printed papers and media outlets. I know that could be a challenge but it needs to be done.
2. The reality of my ranting above is that a lot of the people who read it probebly won't care. They will still buy their movies, cds, dvd; let the entertainment industry walk all over them, and when it's all said and done fair use will be shot to hell.
Thank you for letting me excersize my right to speak.
He did some fantastic work. Couldn't get enough of Bugs and the gang as a kid and even now as an adult.:) I wish his famly peace and would like to say thank you for all the wonderful memories he's given me as a kid.
I've implemented a simple solution to this problem. For more then a year now I havn't gone to any movies, bought any CD's, rented any movies, or even purchased a DVD player yet in my life. I agree it's quite a boring solution for most people, but atleast my dollars ain't going in to an industry that is stamping on rights of the people who support it with their hard earned dollars.
I don't think the majority of the world will follow my solution, but it's one that would work if more people took the time to think where their dollars are going. If you want to stop the insanity, then stop giving them the money to get laws like the DMCA and such in to enforcement.
People, stop making this bed if you don't want to sleep in it. I'm sure there are enough people out there who don't like what the entertainment industry is doing that could hurt their income by boycotting their products.
I found those logo's to be particularly anoying when i was watching Star Trek. When I first saw them I though it was some special effect for a spacial destortion. Then I saw what it really was and wish they could fire a phaser at it.
I've since given up on TV after watching endless hours of comercials and little the little breaks of content between them. If people wanna make money these days do me a favor and go out to your street corner and sell lemon aid and save my sanity. I'd be more likely to get the lemon aid then watch a TV or Web advertisement.
Scene: After the Archer and Tucker watch the new Vulcan science officer leave the room in disgust of the dog. Al appears.
Al: SAM! SAM! Ziggy says there's a 50% of improving your relationship with her and having dinner and a night cap!
Archer: Hows that Al?
Al: Ziggy says that in order for you to have (hand jesture)"Breakfast" with her the next morning. You need to beam the dog off the ship.
Archer: Well the transporters arn't 100%, but that will improve my relationship?
Al: Yeah, you improve the relationship and then you leap out!
Archer: Is that before or after breakfast when I leap out?
Al: I dunno.
Archer: DAMN! Do I chance it? (Eye's up the dog)
Al: Ziggy says there is a 0.1x10^(-30 billion)% chance if the dog stays.
Tucker (Concerned about why Captain Archer appears to be talking to a bulkhead): You ok Captain?
Dog (Eyes up Al's leg): Woof!
Somebody clone Gene Roddenberry so we can have Star Trek with more meaning to go with the T&A.
The Vulcan reminds me of 7 of 9 w/out the implants. The ship looks good, but too Next Generation'ish and needs to be set to atleast ST original or earlier from the artwork thats been out there, to late for that now though.
Right now I'm so sick of terrorists and people who think they are doing the country right by pushing an agenda of draconian laws that I just want to turn around and walk away. I won't because I love my country and I believe that people are innocent until proven guilty and should be treated as such.
Stuff like this really sickens me, watching people play on other peoples fears and realities to get what they want and think would be best for them. In a sense it makes them as radical as the religeous wack-o's that cause all the problems.
I want a safer and better America, but I also want a free America. I don't want over zelous religeon or government involvement. I think if America puts its foot down on the terrorists and not America's citizens we'd have better results.
This means catching and punishing those resposible to the fullest extent of law. In this case I think it'd even warrent their heads on a platter concidering all the innocent people they killed.
If others of their kind see we are just as serious if not more so then mabey they'll think of a more peaceful way of settling their issues. Otherwise we should make them fully understand what their fate will be when we catch them.
If we restrict people and take away their freedom to communicate and do things peacefully we put them in a prison. This I believe will give the Terrorists what they want, to take away a lot of the freedoms American's enjoy. Based on some of the laws and changes to law I hear being tossed around, I think they may have won.
Thats my opinion, I speak it freely here from the USA because I believe I could always do so. I will continue to do so until the day they put me six feet below ground. Sorry for the long post, I had to get it out of my system even if nobody listens or cares.
Um... this sounds crazy. I have a better idea then spending billions on weapons that kill people and save the environment. I have a better idea.
How about thousands on terminals and network cables so there can be one big LAN fest for the war? Imagine the US vs. China in an all out death match in Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, or Counter Strike? Thats environmentally friendly, saves millions and billions of dollars, and anyone can be a soldier of tomorrow! Hell I'd sign up if wars were fought that way, then I'd buy a beer for the guys I was frag'n for my country!:)
Oh well, I'll have to settle for reality, which in my view is more stupid then what I mentioned above.
I'm running a Dell inspiron 8000 myself... Great for Diablo 2 and such. *What a reason to buy a laptop*
Anyhow I like it a lot. P3 700, 192 megs of mem, burner, 2 batteries, big screen, 20 gig drive, and a 32 meg ati graphics card.
I do have some problems though. The pointer stick in the middle has got to go. That thing is a total waste, especially after as it gets older and ya tilt the laptop and it grabs the pointer on the screen because it's not working right. Nasty problem, Dell's solution is not to have a bios switch to turn off the pointer stick, but Windows software to turn it off *Sucks big time.*
So if anyone knows of a Linux utility that can kill pointer sticks on laptops, especially ones like mine, let me know. I have a copy of Mandrake 8 that's itching to get on their.
*And keep a small windows partition for Diablo 2* *Waves cash at Loki to have a diablo 2 port to linux* God I'm a sad case.:)
The real skill is the player who can do it with a blaster or knife depending on the FPS. In diablos case I'd say it'd be the person who can take a normal Wirts Leg which is like 2-8 damage and beat the game in hell mode with it and a cheap suit of armor with no special items! Thats not saying I did that. Athough I've done the FPS blaster/knife thing.:)

Who needs legislation like the DMCA or the SSSCA when you have movies like this to kill piracy?
I'm willing to bet if we told George W there was oil on Mars. He'd be the first one to slap an Ion drive on an oil rig and launch it up.
