  1. See "herbal remedies" on Cyberchondria · · Score: 1

It's probably a fair bet that the majority of positive effects experienced by people using "herbal remedies" fall into this category.

Not like there's anything wrong with that- the power of talismans on the human psyche is very strong indeed and can't be discounted. It's when these things become more than talismans that they're dangerous.

  2. Very interesting on Canadian Recording Industry Goes After P2P Users · · Score: 1

Interesting. I imagine that the Canadian RIAA is targeting users with massive song collections, whom they consider the "kingpins" of the network. This is probably the right approach- as many analyses of the subject have shown, a disproportionately small group of users serves up most of the filespace available on any such network.

I'm more interested in small-worlds sort of stuff- it's less actionable (while there is likely to be a relative "kingpin" in each small sphere as well, he represents less influence) and probably better targeted (no one I know likes Britney or will ever have her stuff offered- so it is less obvious in general.)

  3. Dead on on Lawmakers Game The System · · Score: 1

In fact, I've watched MMOG makers make the same political comparisons and make the same dictatorial policy decisions over and over for years...

THe bottom line is that the dictatorial solution is always what wins out because it's easy. In a MMOG no one has any share in the game except the owners of the company that produced it. People keep saying "listen to the players", and the result of this is that the winner is the one who fakes the hardest while trying to put across an impression of being "democratic".

Hmm, there's a lot about politics that is this way. And people eat it up, too- look at Bush... and John Kerry.

A truly democratic system would be a weird, weird game. No one's tried it yet, though.

MMOG developers are more aptly cast in the position of deity than that of president.

  5. Tactics on Curse Your Way to Live Support · · Score: 1

    My procedure:

If it's a voice jail, I try to find the "if you know your party's extension..." part, and then hit 1234 or something. If that doesn't work I try another number. Once I get through to a random, real person, I then act as if I've got the wrong number and "would you please transfer me to the right department". Old social engineering tricks always work. Often times I end up with the supervisor of the support department I want to deal with, which is usually quite illuminating.

If it's one of those idiotic "language detection" menus (where they waste an hour telling you "If you want technical support, say "technical support") I scratch on the receiver microphone for about 20 seconds until the thing gives up and hands me to a real person. Then I try the above technique.

Most voice jails try very hard to keep you away from a real person (that's why we call 'em jails after all.) But with a little ingenuity you can bust through the bars every time.

  19. And when given the choice: on Perens on Patents · · Score: 1, Offtopic

    When given the choice between:

having a general purpose system that does 50% of what I need to do

having a general purpose system that does 100% of what I need to do

I am always going to pick the second. Linux does not have:

Illustrator (lack of this is HUGE, and don't tell me to use Sodipodi 'cause it ain't cuttin' it.)
Photoshop (don't tell me to use the GIMP, I've been having this argument with people for 6 years and it is not holding any more water.)

You also can't play Ultima Online on it (at least if you want to use UOAssist.)

Now, that isn't to say that Linux doesn't kick ass for certain specialized applications. 3d comes to mind- there are many many high quality 3d apps you can get for it, and most of them are things I would not mind using, (assuming someone else paid for them, ha ha.)

But it's not a platform for graphic or industrial designers- yet. And I've been saying that yet for years and years so who knows.

I will however agree that Linux would work for all of my non gamer non graphics professional friends who have Win98 PCs infested with porn spyware and trojans.

I was introduced to Autechre via an IRC acquaintance of mine. They're a band that's been experimenting with weird stuff in electronic music for about 12 years.

Go and check some of their stuff out. Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" is a true classic of the genre and a great personal favorite. Autechre's "Chiastic Slide" is another good one.

The UCC is the organization that hands out UPC barcodes.

  23. Dumb. on How Much Broadband Usage is Too Much? · · Score: 1

What if I have BT running, and the traffic *never leaves* my subnet, because my neighbor is getting the data from me?

That was effectively a *free* transfer, because it didn't go anywhere. It's the bandwidth that leaves your ISP that is expensive, not the bandwidth inside of it.

An example that might make more sense:

If the only link I have to the Internet is a shared 56k modem that I share with three other people, and I need a file, should I look to see if the users of the other machines have the file, or should I download the entire thing off the Internet?

If another user on my home network has a file, I'd be crazy to download it elsewhere. The same applies with ISPs. BitTorrent can take advantage of this, and ISPs should seriously look into helping this sort of thing out.
