You don't have the 33 LP of the Star Wars Christmas Special including such great hits as "What do you get a Wookie for Christmas (when he already has a comb)?"
You could try one of the many Live CD Linux distros before resorting to a nuke-and-pave. At least that way you'll have an idea if it is an OS/Driver issue...
I bought an external USB IDE cable with an AC power supply off of ebay for $22 including shipping.
It allows you to connect any IDE drive to a USB port (supports USB 1.1 and 2.0) and use it as an external. It also includes the adapter to use 2.5" (notebook) harddrives.
It's not nearly as pretty as a fancy external case, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper.
Here's one guy who's selling them without the 2.5" drive adapter. The guy I bought from doesn't seem to have any listed right now.
Word of warning: the one I bought stoppped working after about a week. I opened the blue end of the cable (IDE connector) that houses the circuit board and it was one of the ugliest by-hand soldering jobs I'd ever seen. The solder was dull and gray and there was some sort of salt build up on the entire board. Thankfully where I work we have an electronics lab and competent people who provided me with the proper equipment to clean it up and touch up the solder points. After that it has worked fine.
In many ways, it relates more to The Matrix than Star Wars. No, seriously, think about it.
Both stories revolve around a young, male geek/nerd.
In both stories the young man is "trapped" in a going-nowhere existence
In both stories the young man knows there is something bigger and more important out there waiting for him to discover it
In both stories an older man approaches him and tells him that he's more than he thinks he is and that he may be the key to saving the world/universe
Both movies feature (for their time) incredible special effects of a kind never seen before
The young male geek gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to not only live out his dreams but to save all of humanity I could probably go on, but that seems like enough for now.
You might want to consider Usenet. I signed up for an all-you-can-eat account with GigaNews and I can download movies from alt.binaries.movies.divx at my full 4MB/s bandwidth limit and I don't have to share anything.
Unless the MPAA/RIAA gets congress to pass a law requiring all Usenet servers to turn over their logs, there is almost zero risk of ever getting a nasty letter from your ISP.
I can queue up a half-dozen movies before I leave for work, or go to bed, and they'll be done by the time I come back to my PC.
The very first episode of C|Net Central had a feature on a company (Failure, Inc. IIRC) who created a video of what they believe happened at the O.J. crime scene. That video was shown to the jurors and they were still unable to convict him.
I'd say that having "super computer graphics" didn't do them any good in this situation.
I commend you for responding to my asshole response without acting like an asshole yourself. That's seems to be a very rare occurence on Slashdot. I respect and salute you even if I don't 100% agree with you!
As a Windows gamer and a part-time Linux user, I can see both sides of this discussion, however the Windows gamer side of me says "If I had to wait 60 more days for Doom 3 to hit store shelves instead of being released on my birthday (it was, really!), then I'd be really pissed off".
I thought that having to wait for Linux binaries was a pretty standard thing - I didn't think it warranted the use of all caps and the F-bomb.
Would it have been great to have Windows and Linux servers available at the same time? Hell yeah, it would!
Would it have been hilarious if the Linux version came out BEFORE the Windows version? I would have needed stitches from my sides splitting from laughing so hard.
Is anybody going to really go postal because they were forced to wait 60 days for Linux binaries to be available. Doubtful.
You mean like someone who TYPES IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE HE THINKS THAT NOT HAVING LINUX BINARIES JUSTIFIES HIS USING THE WORD FUCK?
You're right... that's pretty typical of most adults.
They are going to release binaries, just at a later date. It's not like 99% of the games out there that HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING INTENTION (notice my adult use of all caps and the F-bomb) of ever releasing a Linux version.
It's marked as Troll because the poster chose to convey his message like this "I QUIT PLAYING BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T RELEASED THE FUCKING LINUX BINARIES".
Even though it's probably 100% factual and non-inflamatory, its presented in such a way as to almost scream "TROLL!"
Note: I did not moderate the post, but if I had, this would be why...
I used to work part time for a local computer store (mostly for the employee discount at local computer shows) and one time I was wandering through the RMA area and saw an 8' long table covered with hard drives. They were stacked 3-4 deep and covered the table so completely you couldn't see the surface. I asked one of the techs and he told me that table was exclusively for RMA'ed Western Digital Caviar drives that were waiting to be returned to WD. I said "I thought we stopped carrying WD drives?" and the tech replied "and that table shows why"...
That was a few years ago and I have heard that since then WD has got their act together and that current WD drives don't have the same problems, but I haven't bought a WD drive to check that out.
I purchased a new 250GB Maxtor DiamondMax drive this weekend to supplement the Maxtor 80GB in my primary system that has run pretty much 24/7 without a drive failure for 2+ years (knock on wood)...
Don't forget a bayonet mount... all the truly evil criminals have bayonets on their assault rifles, so they were banned, too.
The only part of the assault weapons ban that could have had any real impact on gun crime was the limitation of size of clips/magazines that can be made or imported into the U.S. Now when someone goes schizo and buys a gun to start shooting everyone in sight, (s)he can only take out 10 people before he has to stop and reload - unless he's willing to spend the extra bucks to buy a pre-ban clip, and if you're going to commit cop-assisted-suicide, you might as well spend it all, right?
Everything else was about the "appearance" of the weapon and they banned everything that looked "scary" or "evil".
I'd say the makers of "low carb ice cream" and such are in for a far greater fall. IIRC, the atkins diet requires carb levels of fewer than 20 grams each day, and much of this "low carb" junk food exceeds that with only one or two servings. All things considered, they are false advertising more,...
That's just as sad as the stores that sell "sugar-free" bakery goods and candy that is "safe for diabetics". Instead of sugar they use an alcohol based sweetener that has almost as many carbohydrates - but it's not sugar... Diabetics who aren't well trained by their health care providers see the signs and think "Hey, I can eat as much sugar-free pineapple upside-down cake as I want and still live a long and healthy life!
Those companies shouldn't only be charged with false advertising but with intentional malice and (what's the phrase you always hear on Law & Order? oh yeah...) reckless indifference.
For those of you who are diabetics, know someone who is diabetic, or probably will be one day, say it with me "A carb is a carb is a carb. Doesn't matter if it's from sugar, french fries or 'sugar-free' pineapple upside-down cake."
Or you could download the hacked firmware that "protects" you from those evil 4x discs AND lets you burn at 2x on ALL media regardless of its intended speed. 200+ discs burnt so far with no problems on that firmware... don't have the link handy here at work, though...

But you can rob a store with a shotgun or a high-powered hunting rifle, both of which can be owned by a conviced felon.
A convicted felon is banned from owning a handgun for life in this country. That's a second ammendment right.
Why should voting be treated differently?

eMule is spyware free, so no worries there.
Woot! Thanks! I love this feature in UltraEdit! Slashdot needs more people like you!
Linkification doesn't do you any good if it's not a valid URL (i.e., it has a space in it). Other then that, it is one of my favorite extensions.

Or am I threatening national security by relating my knowledge of these VERY basic photography skills?
:-)
No, but you might have violated the DMCA for detailing a way to circumvent an electronic security system...

It was available on the PC as well. There was a Life and Death II on the PC that was all about neurosurgery, which as it turns out, is pretty tough...

along with Rick Berman's three hour apology speech for what he has done to Star Trek
Only 3 hours? He must talk really, really fast if he's going to fit it all into 3 hours...

Pioneer DVD burners that max out at less than 4x had problems with 4x media and could spin up too fast and damage the media or the drive.
A simple firmware fix from Pioneer corrected this problem.
