I had the same feeling... until I bought a new game console. Now I don't need to make a choice since it's already been made for me; now I don't have to go out and buy a player for either format.

I think the whole "war" is moot now anyways, since so many companies have already decided on backing one or both formats. So many movies/tv-series out already, and so many more on the way (for both formats)... I don't foresee either backing down now or ever.

Seriously? So there was never any rush of any kind to get an iPhone? More than 2/3rds of my family and friends' cellphones are actually figments of their imagination?

Probably the most successful power phone, though, is still the RIM BlackBerry...
Not sure about this statistic, but I actually know more people that have Treos than Blackberrys.

And let's not overlook both the power of the Mac mystique and the loyalty of BlackBerry users. Google has no such mavens.
Whoa, wha, huh?? Worship the Goog, my friend.

The best example of this lack of magnetism was Orkut, the social business network developed by the company to compete with both Friendster and LinkedIn. It never caught on in the U.S. It did become successful in Brazil and, apparently, only in Brazil. Nobody even noticed that it came and went.
Actually, I was on Orkut as soon as it became available and loved it... until the Brazilians overtook it. A few months later, once all of the boards became spammed with Brazilian Portugese (despite some baords even being listed as "English Only"), all the Americans left.

  7. Right here on Cheap New GeForce 8800 GT Challenges $400 Cards · · Score: 1

I just bought an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB PCI-E last week. Despite what the OP says, it only cost me $263.99, not $400... and that was at a store. If I had patience and ordered it online, I'm sure I could have spent even less.

The REASON I got it? (1) I haven't bought a new desktop in almost 8 years and I needed a new machine that I wouldn't have to worry about breaking down for another 8 - 10 years to come. (2) I've never actually had a graphics card in any of the machines I've built before and, from my research (and other places), this one seemed the best bang for my buck. (3) I have no intention of getting a Wii or 360 or whatever; plus the fact that the current games I want to play and apps I want to use can't be used on a gaming console anyways.

You say my "cutting edge premium card is going to look overpriced and behind the curve tomorrow"; I say the same about your gaming console.

    Puts things into perspective

I wonder if any of us (that is, humans) will be around to see the destruction, or if anyone alive then will ever know what they looked like today?

The "pillars" that the article is referring to are not massive solid structures that will, all of a sudden, crumble one day; they are gargantuan clouds of "space stuff" (stars, protostars, gases, etc...). Like clouds in our atmosphere, they are continuously, slowly and gradually changing. Wondering if humans 1,000 years from now are going to remember what it looked like to us now is as silly as wondering if the other kids on my 3rd grade field trip remember that cloud that looked like Bugs Bunny's head.

The only press that it might get 1,000 years from now would be from some historian that found this article in his archives and decides to fill a column with pointless reminiscing of "how naive we used to be". It would be today's equivalent of going back to articles written in the 1980's about predictions of "how great life and technology will be 20 years from now" and just pointing out that the author was incredibly off.

If you want perspective, just ponder the sheer SIZE of the Eagle Nebula compared to the size of our planet (which is, for now, the only thing our human civilization can affect directly). We are no more than a speck of sand on the beach dude.
