I have to ask what Yorkshire is really like. I'm from Teh USA, so I've never been there. But all I hear about is that they're a very backwards region, in basically every way possible. I've even heard some people go so far as to say that Yorkshire is resonsible for a lot of the decay in the United Kingdom today. Are those claims true, or are they just overgeneralizations based on the actions of a select few individuals?

As a good number of regular slashdot readers are no doubt aware, full source code to Linux, Apache, etc. is available to anyone and they are more secure than their counterparts for this reason.

But Cisco hasn't opened up their source. As far as we know only Cisco and the bad guys have this code. Cisco might not have all the bases covered when it comes to reviewing their code. It's possible that they had their code audited, but who knows?

Of course, you can go to an IBM reseller and get a year old solution for about 25% of the original cost for a machine. Why mess around when you're building a server. Ostensibly a company will be using this to either make money directly or support the making of money in some other area of the business, so why mess around?

  25. everything is open to negotiation on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

It doesn't hurt to attempt negotiation. When I started talking to the company that I work for now I noticed a clause that I didn't care for. They wanted EVERY thing I did while being employed by the company to be their property. Naturally, that just didn't sit well with me. So I asked if it would be reasonable for the contract to be changed to treat projects I worked on during my own time using my own resources and wasn't work-related as my own and to keep stuff I work on expressly for work using company resources to be property of the company. They agreed to this and it's in my contract now. I'll probably pay the company if I need to use any of their resources to insulate myself from any conflicts with this. I'll see how it goes. Just remember that negotiation is always an option. They might just respect you for it.
