I just use a self-powered USB hub connected to my KVM so I can share all my USB devices with all my computers. Although of course only the currently switched comp can use them.
As for FW, I only need it for the Mini, and I have my new external drivebay connected to it, and my iPod chained off of that.
Interestingly, when I turn the drivebay off, the iPod will still charge but it won't be seen by the Mac.
I wonder how long it'll be until somebody offers a replacement case for the Mini thats big enough to accommodate a desktop size hard drive and maybe even an optical drive too (so you can utilize cheaper and faster, albeit noisier, 3.5" and 5.25" drives.) It won't be as mini as the Mini itself, but it might be cool! Heck, if they make it roomy enough, maybe it could fit the Mini's power brick inside too.
I just bought a Mini 9 days ago, and wanted an external firewire drive too. None of the locally available stores sold bare FW enclosures, and their prices on pre-installed ones were ridiculous.
I was able to pick up a bare 250 GB, 7200 RPM, 8 MB cache Maxtor drive for $107.50 (clearance at Staples) and then had to order a bare enclosure at Newegg ($31). Saved a bundle going that route, although the bay admittedly doesn't look as cool as this one.
Too bad they specifically say they don't sell them without hard drives installed.
Does this mean I can finally get rid of my dialtone service altogether??? Or does it just mean I don't have to have Verizon for dialtone, but I still need to have a local carrier?
Also, I have DSL through a CLEC (GWI.net), does anyone know if they count too?
I've been wanting to drop dialtone for a long long time and go with cellular instead for phone service. As it is, I can't justify paying $30/mo or so for Verizon landline plus the same again for cell.
Does it do anything for the hard drive parking noises? I've owned 2 iBooks and currently an Al PB G4 15", and they all make periodic clicking noises when the hard drive parks itself (I assume thats what its doing anyway.) It only does it when the machine is relatively idle, but it can be annoying when reading a webpage or playing solitaire for instance when it makes the noise twice every minute or so.
On my first iBook there was a little app called APM Tuner that let you adjust the drive's power down time out. It worked, but that app is discontinued apparently and I can't find it anywhere. Probably wouldn't work with Panther (or Tiger) anyway.
Oh, and BTW, my PB also makes those squealing sounds when there's heavy Ethernet usage.
Yes...and you could do the same thing with Windows Xyz as well.
The point being that it goes against the EULA to install 1 copy of the OS on more than 1 machine. Apple's "family pack" has a special EULA that specifically allows installing on up to 5 machines.
Is there any software mechanism that prevents you from taking 1 copy and putting it on a bazillion machines? No. But they're operating on the assumption that people will follow the Honor Code.
I for one much prefer Apple's policy to Microsoft's.
(Although I much prefer [insert commercial or otherwise linux distribution name here] even better, but I digress...)
This made me think. Why not download illegally, but since you're concerned about the director (or actor or whomever) not getting enough money, paypal him $10 or some such amount.
How the heck would they find that out? Flash a 1 frame picture of a penis during a Disney movie (ala Fight Club) and count how many people seem disturbed?
I second this. For the entire 3rd season, I couldn't get UPN because I had switched to DirecTV and they didn't offer local channels for me until May/June 2004 when the season finale had already aired. So for that time I had to bittorrent it too. Its a shame that suprnova and lokitorrent are gone now, those were my favorites for this sort of thing.
Now, if Hollywood began offering pay-to-download episodes, I'd jump on that as long as the fee wasn't too much and the DRM wasn't so intrusive (you know they'd have DRM..)
It'd be great if you could burn it to VCD and watch on your TV and then pass the disc on to someone else.
I wonder if they might come out with a model thats slightly larger to accomodate a TV Tuner (HDTV?), LCD/LED/VFD and IR receiver, and maybe even a 3.5" HD that'd be more suitable for video than the 2.5" notebook-size drive it uses now.
I wish this was done a long long time ago. I've always hated the 2^10 bullcrap for *bytes. It doesn't make sense anyway as a computer doesn't really care if something is exactly some multiple of 1024 to be the next big unit. It only cares about bytes. The kilo/mega/giga/etc. is only for human readability anyway, so why not make it simpler for us mortals who can't figure how many bytes are in a gigabyte without using a calculator.
...but if the financial institutions that own my loans (car, student, credit card) suddenly "forgot" about them...well...I'd like that! Reminds me of Fight Club.
This month I built a SN95G5 Shuttle (Athlon 64, Nforce3 Ultra chipset [AGP 8X not PCIex]) and I threw in a Geforce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3. Works just fine on the PSU thats included (250W I think?)
Interesting that bit about British nationality (I'm American). One thing that I wondered about was the last part about revoking citizenship "These powers cannot be exercised, however, if the subject would be rendered stateless as a result, and a right of appeal exists."
What's so bad about being stateless? Hell, sometimes I wish I didn't have to be anyone's vassal...excuse me "citizen".
If a private individual or organization somehow managed to go to uncontested territory, like, say the Moon, and set up a colony there, could they declare themselves Moonians (Lunatics?:-) and renounce any citizenship to Earth countries?
One thing I was wondering though, is since its an image produced by a projector, how exactly does it produce "black"? In a CRT, LCD or a rear projection TV, the screen itself is quite dark, and when projecting "black" it simply doesn't send any light to the pixels that are black.
But since with this thing the display is transparent glass, what will black look like? Will it just be transparent so you'd see whatever you have behind the glass?
I saw the pictures from the website, they're low quality and do seem to be retouched or maybe faked. Lots of advertisements for other displays are faked ("simulated") so why not this?
Am I the only one rolling eyes over this? I just can't get excited about new consoles. I currently own all the current consoles, and feel guilty as I hardly use them now.
About the only things that could seem like a major upgrade to me would be improved resolution by requiring an HDTV (not likely to happen), and cheap but effective VR gear like in Sci-Fi (really not likely to happen anytime soon.)
I mean, come on, all the current game systems have many of the same games on them now with little to distinguish them visually and aurally.
Same goes for PC games, really. All FPSers follow the exact same formula, and dispite all the graphical glory possible with Geforce 6800 Ultras and Athlon64 FXs and their ilk, they all boil down to trying to imagine yourself in a virtual world when all you see and experience is coming from the monitor in front of you and the speakers nearby.
Why isn't there true VR yet? A FPSer that utilized immersive, full-body experience would be amazing!
Instead, we just get new super-marketed hype machines that push more polygons than the last models so the eye-candy is sweeter, but otherwise they're the same old thing all over.
I will admit I enjoy many of the games available for the current systems and they weren't possible before them, but I think the real next generation should be a VR gaming system.
(Yes I know the Virtual-Boy was a flop, but that was Nintendo's mistake in releasing "VR" too early on too inadaquate hardware)
I, too, would really like this to be genuine. However, my brain-implanted bogus detector started screaming bloodly murder while I was reading that article.
How legit is Red Nova anyway? I've read some stuff there before, but I'd like to know if its all pseudo-science or not.
The article mentioned several "reputable scientists"...of course, I have no idea if these folks named are real or not. I've never heard of any them, but then again I'm not a scientist. I do read laymen's science magazines like Scientific American, New Scientist, and Discover religiously, though, in addition to books written by scientists who have either published in those magazines or were mentioned favorably.
This article marks the first time I've seen anything like this passed off as a real scientific news story, and not part of science fiction. I'm skeptical as all hell about it.
But, if it is true, I would really love to believe it.
One thing I've always wanted was to be able to plug a second mouse in for your other hand. If you think about it, a mouse is a projection of your hand in cyberspace (I hate the word, but it fits).
With 2 mice, imagine the interface. It'd be easier to manipulate windows for one thing, and in 3D games, the "pointers" would be hands. So instead of running over items to pick them up, as in every game in existence, you had to use your hands to do it. Right now, its awkward to do that. But it would be easier I think with virtual hands.
Also, it'd be pretty neat if you had to do things like reload weapons manually, instead of hitting 'R' and the game runs an animation doing it for you. It would certainly make firefights more exhilarating and difficult!
As for magic, same idea, you could use them for hand waving.

I was able to watch the first 1:44 of the clip from the host site, and then it just died. Neither of the caches given above work for me either.
Torrent! Torrent! Torrent!
Also, does anyone know how come mirrordot.org doesn't always mirror the links given in slashdot articles?
Hmm, yes they couldn't control the plane, but they could still threaten the hibernating passengers if the terrorists don't have their demands met.

I think you meant to say
crappy popular shit like Survivor and American Idol = Great speed! HDTV quality!!
Educational shows, documentaries, GOOD sci-fi/drama with good plots and stories without pandering to the masses and LCD = Shitty speed and quality

I was playing around with Worldwind and saw the same thing. Actually, they appear to be the exact same images.
So I guess Google's using the same source as Worldwind.

Of course that's entirely speculation/wish list.

Just a thought.
Your URL is pretty messed up there! It takes you to microsoft.com for some reason.
Try this instead http://www.atarilynx.com/pages/apb.shtml
I never owned a Lynx but wanted one so bad...when was that? 1990?
And I thought the creator of GTA was Rock Star Games? http://www.rockstargames.com/
I don't see any mention of them.
