While I think this is a valid idea, I also think it is a bit strict. My problem is with a federal committee overseeing standard compliance. Remember a month ago the announcement that finally a C++ compiler existed that supported the entire language? There are hundreds of compilers and only one supports the full standard? Even my beloved Opera doesn't support every HTML standard perfectly (it's close, but not 100%).
I don't know what punishment I would prescribe (probably open the APIs), but I think 100% standard compliance isn't it. If we were to act along those lines, maybe part of the action could be that MS could not extend any standards.

I'll buy the Rambus claim, but what exactly would make Micron a monopoly? If Salon is correct and Micron is the only US based DRAM manufacturer, I guess by definition that's sort of a monopoly, but I've never seen Micron (well, Crucial) exploit that power in any way.
Think about it, DAs are given to people who prove themselves to be the weakest losing out letting the strongest survive. This guy put a lot of thought and care into this; he did not blindly build a rocket. If he dies it won't be because of stupidity, rather miscalculation--something we all make daily.
Actually, yes, the freedom of speech is the freedom to say such things. If the courts were to blacklist everytype of "terrorist" writings, where would it stop? How is this different from blacklisting Communism in the 50's and Herr McCarthy's banning of forms of thought? To say that freedom of speech only takes the curret fad of what is "good" does not mean it is freedom. It is subjectivism under which everyone is forced by law. The freedom of speech is all encroaching; it takes the "good" with the "bad" despite what people want to have censored.
Well, the site is currently/.ed, but I'll still throw in my $0.02.
What I am waiting for is for someone to rebuild or restart the Sierra Network/the Imagination Network (whichever nomenclature you preffer). Does anyone else remember this?
I remember TSN as having a nice little email feature (text only and only within TSN), a completely graphical interface, nice chatting, fairly customizable avatars, good games, and somehow the lag seemed nonexistant (and I was on a 2400 baud at the time).
Nothing yet has come close to it, and nothing yet has seemed to have the same magic.
I saw this after on/. after I got home from school and could have sworn I saw it earlier. I checked K5 (my main hideout), but it was neither in the queue nor on the front page. I was about to question my sanity.
By the way, Kuro5hin is Scoop based, Slashdot is Slashcode based.
I don't believe that it is simply technology and the arts fuseing, but rather that the arts are finding a new medium. For example, the grand art deco buildings from the 20's were "fused" with the technology of the time, but were artistic in the way they were structured.
I don't believe this is an evolution toward "information arts", but rather looking at things through the lens of techno-deity at the same thing done for years.
Ok, then a fairer comparison is to the United States. When attacked (Napter, WTO) the two respond harshly (courts, guns). Both appear to help ("artist's compensation", "international aide"), but are stabbing those who help ($2 royalties; stopping internation aide to afghanistan, sanctions). Next the countercurrents within their relms dislike the actions (/. and the anti-RIAA mantra; anarchists, anti-war people, Chomskyites, et al with their mantra). Lastly those institutionalized in those mindsets try and quiet those countercurrents (corporate media, businesspeople; the majority of America).
It will have integrated Ibutton support for security and authentification, maybe even built into the BIOS.
Let me, as an iButton user, tell you about some issues. First of all, I know you are speaking hopefully, but there currently are no Linux drivers for it, and the Windows ones I have yet to get to work under NT bases systems. That is not to say that it is a bad device, but from what I have heard (I'm connected very closely with one of the people holding the patent on the iButton) those issues are not going to be resolved soon. Before the Maxim buyout, they were, but not as recently are the issues being looked at.
Now, not only do I have crapily modified cars running down main street fridays and saturdays, but now I also have to deal with these jerks interruptin my flight!? I don't want to see a rocket with a 4' muffler, it's not cool. I don't care if your rocket has a Vtec engine. I want to fly safely from point A to point B, much as I would like to drive from point A to point B without having your terrestial counterpats fly past me at 100+ mph.
Or for the geek girls:
"Sure I'm Jenny and my number is http://86.75.3.09
Except I'm in my doorm room and my roommate's taking a quick nap.

Does anyone have more solid information?

So rip a DivX to DivX ;-)? My brain hurts.
Disclaimer: I have now been up 36 hours, if this is not funny, darn.

Whelp, I guess now we get to see how many people really meant that C++++ in their geek code.
My god, that was funny. Thank you for making me laugh before sleeping.
yeah, I remember on my old scientific in Algebra 2 constantly laughing at 5138008. Yeah, I wasn't too mature then.
I mean, look, what credit did Zhenan Bao get besides holding that damn model?
Geez, I thought the XBOX controler was huge, but this is, this is fucking huge
