your old hardware starting to seem sluggish? run Linux!
Good Idea!
There should be a "simple" Linux that is designed for home users to use to turn an old PC into a fileserver.
I'm thinking something that will install Knoppix style, load a simple config wizard that will setup DHCP, Samba in NT emulation mode, etc. Such a thing is very doable with linux, we should make it one click to setup (Byte me, Amazon!)
Then, in the future, if the user wants to, he can begin fiddling with things directly.
I'm talking put-the-CD-in and then type two or three things, everything else autodetected or defaults.
As to tapes, I'd like to recommend Tandberg's SLR 100 tape drive utilizing the QIC tapes. They are very reliable (after 7 years of OEM with IBM, they had about a 1% failure rate). As the QIC is a cassette the tape never has to be unwound out of the cartrigde as it does in DLT and other formats.
They store 50 GB native (also available are smaller sizes).
- Any site that serves a Flash ad, gets blocked.. (or will, as soon as I figure out how to do that with Mozilla)
Flash Block, when combined with AdBlock, will do everything you want and need. (Block the flash, then use the right click context menu to block that server.
To bad there is no way for users to share adblock config files (or at least I haven't found one).

There was a black guy who lived next door to the house we rented. He drove this absolute beater of an old ulgy green car. All the "rich" people around there looked down at him as if he were a bum. It was always quite fun to watch their reaction when they learned he owned 2 blocks of downtown LA real estate!
Admit it. With the exception of Apache, Samba is the number one reason that Linux (and BSD, too!) has been able to invade the datacenters of companies the world over.
Without Samba, Linux et al would be in a much less pretty position.
Perhaps we should call it Samba/GNU/Linux?:)
Kudos to the Samba Team, Tridge, and all Samba developers/testers/users!
No, there's something really wrong with mine. If I load my 17,000 song playlist, it still will only play the songs that I've completed playing previously. To me, it looks like some "play my favorite more often" setting gone wrong.
I've been using iTunes, but it's shuffle doesn't seem to work right. Out of a 200 song playlist, it keeps playing the same 25 or so songs. This is driving me nuts.
Am I missing something? I really do like shuffle, and I don't want to have to go back to winamp.
The online docs have some fixes to the documentation, but there are a few chapters that are in the book that are not available online.
Recommended. (And if you're lucky, you might be able to get a signature from JHT who is gallivanting around the countryside.....)

You mind refreshing my mind on that one?
I've got a headache.

Ah, well. Winamp (and xmms) here I come again.

SLR forever!
I love the Tandberg SLR tape drives. Nothing beats a quarter inch of aluminum plating.
True, true. I should have said switch. I'm using a netgear Switch, and it seems to work well.
