Free speech doesn't apply, that's correct. Digg shouldn't try to ever claim that it does then. That's the issue. If they were open about ruling with an iron fist and reserving the right to censor whenever, that's fine. Just I get the feeling (I don't digg) that he/they claimed to be about the user, letting them decide whats news and whats not and then opting to censor a story that ended up being the biggest news of the day.

Everyone keeps mentioning this. The thing that seems to be forgotten is the FOSS movement isn't being paid a salary by a single source. If the FOSS "Inc" started paying whatever Google pays to their employees, how long would FOSS Inc stay in business? Would they have the cash reserve and revenue that Google and MS have? This is at the core of what Balmer is hinting at. How long can Google continue hiring at the rate they do while relying one 1 or 2 products and the rest of them "failing" and still be in the financial condition that they are in?

That is argubly find and dandy. I think the 'issue' is, thats not what MS said. What they said was the people in question stole copyright code to do it.

People would still hate them, but at least MS was upfront about its fishing expedition.

Also believe it or not, people can make money and not screw over everyone in the process. Google comes as close to this as a comnpany of their size can at the moment. That's why people love them. They aren't about firing large amounts of staff just to make quarterly expectations.

People love comapnies that treat them right. There are people who love companies based on how they treat others. Google has done a decent job managing both sides of the PR spectrum.

I think CC has a bit of bargaining power. I don't see MPAA pulling all DVDs from the CC shelves to 'prove a point'. I hope CC fights this, should be good times.

There is something inherently wrong with a design of an OS when you're asking the user to be strong willed and willing to make sacrafices (in this case happiness) in the name of the OS. I have a great idea: how about you show your friends a great alternative to the program they want to use in windows or make their system run firefox as smooth in linux as it does Windows. If you can't manage this task, you need to step down from your high horse and accept that all your friends aren't willing to make the sacrifices that you are in the name of supporting Linux. Sheeple will admit their flaws, will the zealots?
