    I agree. I find IM much less distracting than the phone for simple conversations. It interupts the flow of my work a lot less. It can get a little annoying when too many people start sending you unimportant messages at once. However, it is also easier to ignore IMs than the phone when you do not want to be disturbed ;)

    What needs to happen is to get a large business software company (read: Microsoft) to integrate IM into their next Office suite.

    Microsoft has a service on Exchange that allows you to run a private instant messaging system. You use the same client as MSN messenger. Maybe they will make it a little more prominent in the next version of Office/Outlook?

    Does anyone remember the days when a VHS movie cost $65+? I love DVDs, this is the perfect example of how competition lowers prices.

    Movies on VHS dropped down to the $20 - $25 price range long before DVD was widely available. Yes, VHS seems to have dropped in price slightly since DVD has become more mainstream, but not that drasticly.

    Should local programmers come up with something really useful that runs under Windows, Microsoft is likely to just steal the idea (as they've done so often in the past).

    What is to stop Microsoft (or anyone else for that matter) from "stealing" and idea for software that doesn't run on Windows? Why would it matter what platform the software runs on if all they are doing is "stealing" the idea?

    Nothing says that big business has the right to have their message heard. They can say it, but I don't have to listen.

    While this is true, and I agree with you, advertisers may come to the conclusion that television advertising is no longer effective. If that happens we will have to pay for all the channels, like we do today for channels like HBO, Showtime, etc. I don't know what the solution is, but I do know that I wouldn't pay for most of the channels that I watch for free now.

    He's not talking about the energy needed to make hydrogen burn, I believe he is referring to the idea that the most common process of producing hydrogen, separating it from the oxygen in water molecules, uses electricity. The amount of energy the resulting hydrogen can produce ends up being less than the amount expended to produce it in the first place.

    OK, just to keep the silliness going...
    If Hurd = 0, then the result is 0, not undefined since Gnu / Gnu * 0 = 0. The '/' and '*' operators have the same order of precedence, so they are evaluated from left to right.

    That's not "slamming". Slamming is when a telephone company switches your long distance provider without your permission.

    According to the FCC website, slamming is prohibited by FCC rules already.
    "Slamming," or switching a consumer's telephone carrier without his or her knowledge or consent, is prohibited by the FCC's rules. The Commission enforces these rules by investigating individual complaints and patterns of slamming practices and punishes those who slam.
    So, I don't think this has any impact on slamming.

    I'm not sure about Microsoft, but at many companies being a vice president is no big deal. It's about the same as a manager at other companies.

    I'm not sure which Toshiba model it was that I was using a while back, but in order to get it to boot from the CD, you had to run a utility in Windows to switch the boot order. Maybe that's what you need to do to get yours to boot off of the CD?

    you can use the .m3u format

    m3u isn't really a format. It is just the file extension for a text file with a list of mp3 files in it separated by CRLF on windows and LF on UNIX. It is a playlist file.

    The specific instance that she is referring to in the article sounds as though someone put cameras into the home of another person, and then watched them from somewhere else. That's different than you putting cameras in your own home. Although, I don't know how the bill handles that situation exactly.

    Yes, you can - you just have to have a sign out front informing any visitors that they're being watched. If they don't like it, they shouldn't enter.

    Not true, you don't need a sign if you are taping in your house, as long as it is not for "lewd and lascivious" purposes. Read the article.

    Do you really think you are not being taped when you enter an adult shop? Why would it be any different than walking into a drugstore or convenience store, etc. Most stores have security cameras of some sort.

    From the CNN article:

    The bill would not apply to security cameras in private places such as department store dressing rooms...


    So, it still would be legal to tape people in dressing rooms, as long as it is not for "lewd or lascivious purposes".
