    I would have bought a NetMD player without hesitation if it had played MP3s and if one could transfer files without reencoding. Even if Ipods had been as cheap.

    So is Sony giving up on MD? Or am I finally going to get my MP3 MD player? (Make it with a screen the size of current HD Mp3 players, or Rio's MP3 CD players, and I'll buy two.)

    Japan is in roughly the same position as the US with respect to China, and they are more interested in English for business than anyone except maybe the Koreans.

    The only reason you should brush up on your Japanese (besides WANTING to, 'cause while it may not get bigger it ain't going away) is that it will help you learn Chinese.

    Were you in the absolute lowest level math class? (I TAed for what was pretty close)

    Men dominate the top end of the distribution for many measurements...and the bottom. Women tend more towards the middle.

    It's the lot of maledom to be both the best and worst of just about everything.

    Whether the decline in job offers to women under his benevolent rule is wrong depends on how things were before it.

    And who cares if the reasons are biological or social? In every school I ever went to, about 80 percent of the best math students were boys. If women chose to slack off in math, that's their damn choice. Isn't that what women are supposed to want? Women in general can't really come out looking good if you look at this issue. Because either it's their fault, or it's their genes' fault.

    If I'm sounding a little mysoginistic it's because I don't think anyone should be humoring delusions...mass or individual.

    Remember all those giant EA genesis carts? Remember how all the games sucked? They lacked any style, visually...unless chunky and ugly is a style. The choppily animated EA logo was a sure sign of a forgettable experience ahead. At best.

    In addition, the FTC said the advertisements did not include the required "opt-out" link to be removed from the e-mail list. As a result, thousands of people continued to receive the messages without their consent.

    I think they mean they lacked the required "yes, I'm reading your spam"-opt-in link.

    I don't know what's more frustrating, the obstinance of spammers or the ignorance of lawmakers.

    I just went looking at some screenshots. I remember now. The awful design. I didn't have an eye for it at the time, but it DOES obviously do a technically better 3D environment than Doom did. It DOESN'T look as good, though.

    Doom was slick. It was cool. You were fighting demons from hell (most of whom looked right enough), and it damn well looked like that's what you should have been fighting.

    Marathon looks like you should be playing as Ronald McDonald, hunting down Hamburglar.

    It's not that the article exists....I figure that's about as far as you could go with getting into minutae about Star Trek without it being overkill (but it does go farther)...having articles on major players in the Star Trek universe, sure. They take it much farther, though. And they write as though it were all real.

    But as far as what you're talking about, there ARE things which take it too far. Like a separate article for every unit type in Starcraft. (those might have been consolidated by now, but there used to be).

    Everything2 is not without it's uses. Due to the apparently much less strict standards they hold things to (or don't), there are some damn funny articles there that would never survive on Wikipedia.

    Something that pisses me off about arcane articles is when they just need ONE DAMN WORD to be defined in order to be understood by someone with no specific background in the field. It's one thing to write a whole article as though you were writing for a damn journal. You haven't TRAGICALLY wasted effort by failing to elucidate ONE piece of information upon which the clarity of the whole article rests...you haven't come so close to writing the perfect wikipedia article that your failure is amplified by your near-success.

    GAH.

    Oh, yeah, and then when there's no response to requests for clarification. that's even better.
