  1. May Days on Broadway Musicians Replaced With Synthesizers · · Score: 1

Music has been getting murdered since about 1890 when things like record players, radio and the microphone started killing off big bands, orchestras and neighborhood bands. Tin Pan Alley was killed off and was the supplier of sheet music for America. Families no longer played music on most porches and the piano became more and more rare in living rooms.
Now we are seeing something even worse. And there will be repercussions. School bands already suffer and you can bet that kids will not want to learn instruments when machines displace pro players. And who will be left standing to build pro quality instruments when sales are killed off by robots-computers that can play any tune as well. Right now it is painful and expensive to purchase a pro quality tuba, or other brass horn. People spend many thousands to acquire a pro quality clarinet or flute. If sales volumes fall off these instruments will go through the roof in price. And those that make CDs or DVDs or allow their music to be on TV are certain to have it duplicated by these new devices so the recording industry is pretty much out of luck as well.
But the worst part is the social aspect being destroyed. Communities and families were often held tightly together by the creation of music. What replaces that? I already own computer programs that will create, play and print good music from all of the instruments in combination. That means I need no one to produce tunes. It is a sad state of affairs.

  2. Estimates on UK Government Rejects Calls To Upgrade From IE6 · · Score: 1

It is very difficult to put potential losses into a dollar amount from a breach is software. One can bet that IE6 will be breached from time to time. And to me it is not an issue of austerity as use of commercial software is wasteful. Why not use Linux systems with inherently greater security as well as the fact that the Linux community has free software that would avoid the initial costs and updates for free as well?
When it come to saving money governments are without a clue.

  3. Hold On! on What's Wrong With the American University System · · Score: 1

Colleges spend money on football simply because they make huge profits by so doing. Football is a cash cow. There are monies directly earned as well as more indirect routes such as keeping loyal alumni who donate large sums to the school and attracting new students to a degree that higher rates can exist for admissions.
If I had a complaint it would be with some of the new age junk where people are promoted and graduated without regard to their proven learning.
As for teachers obsessed with publishing that flows from administrations pushing them to publish. Again that relates to colleges needs in fund raising which is simply a proof that society and government are not supporting education properly. It would be a far better policy to offer free schooling for all but make it difficult enough to only allow the best minds to get through the courses.

  4. Same Old Story on High-Frequency Programmers Revolt Over Pay · · Score: 2, Insightful

Many years ago I created fancy condenser units. I could easily create four or five a day and they sold for 5K each. I was payed about $10. per hour and creating $25,000 in product each day.
My point being that our economic system is slanted in such a way that those that actually create are often not paid much at all whereas those that create nothing often are very well paid. That attitude is beginning to trigger some real negatives. The car mechanic or tradesman now often has little conscience and is likely to cheat and do poor work to whatever degree he can get away with it while charging huge rates for his efforts.

  5. Money! on Tennessee Town Releases Red Light Camera Stats · · Score: 1

Actually stop light cams could make traffic safer but they will be abused as long as cities can make money by using them. If the public insists that such such ticket issued causes a small loss to the city then enforcement will mean something other than a fraudulent way to tax the public.
Anyone who thinks these cams should not be used only need visit a city where drivers get so frustrated by congestion that a light can turn red four or five times and thousands of cars run the light bumper to bumper and refuse to allow the other lanes to use the road at all. I've seen this in Ft. Lauderdale and it is usually about 4:30 in the afternoon when people are leaving work.

  6. Stupid Courts on UK Courts Rule Nintendo DS R4 Cards Illegal · · Score: 0, Flamebait

The idea that an item as legitimate uses is not a defense is as stupid as a ruling could get. I use a knife to cut my food. Knives are used in murders. Therefore knives must be held to be illegal even though they have legitimate uses.
This is about the most blatant form of corruption a court can display. It is a political posture. They are in effect saying that big business must have power over smaller businesses and individuals which is an absurd and evil conservative posture.
The remedy is to make and distribute these items in great excess making certain that piracy increases every time such a position is taken by the state.

  7. Bad Idea on Microsoft Should Dump Middlemen, Build Own Phones · · Score: 1

Microsoft is not a hardware company.Phones are complex and highly competitive due to market size. Chances are that Microsoft would not be able to build a competitive phone on the first offering and the cost of setting up a fabrication facility would be a dreadful loss. And then there is the worst of all problems. In order to build a decent phone it would probably need to be Linux based and that would amount to a very degrading admission on their part. (I just had to add that last sentence.)

  8. Re:What if he shot the cop? on Facing 16 Years In Prison For Videotaping Police · · Score: 1

Gestapo anyone? The very idea that any person could ever be arrested for filming in a public place is absurd and fills me with terror. It also scares the hell out of me that any cop could be idiot enough to draw down on someone before showing a badge or making certain that the target knew that he was a cop. That cop is very lucky to be alive. And he is so stupid that he needs to never be allowed access to weapons again.
For folks with a gun carry permit the law frowns on displaying a weapon. If that pistol comes out the trigger gets pulled. In other words my state does not allow a person to display a gun to fend off an attacker. But we are allowed to shoot an attacker. So if you see an unidentified person pointing a gun at you and you are skilled enough you shoot them. Dumb cop!

  9. Freedom on Interview With the Man Behind WikiLeaks · · Score: 1

The notion of a democracy is that each person should have a chunk of freedom. Freedom and a government with secrets can not exist. Democracy is ruined by secrets. How should I pick a candidate to vote for? Candidate A declares that the military needs a larger budget. Candidate B declares that the military has too much power and their budget must be reduced. Since I can not know what the military is up to or how much research is being funded by the military compared with installing conventional weapons etc.. just how do I vote? In essence I have no reason to vote when I can not know what is going on.
I salute the brave folks at WikiLeaks and hope that they prosper and expand their efforts to stop this curtain of blindness that governments are addicted to putting in the publics eye.

  10. Maybe I'm Old on Your Online Education Experience? · · Score: 1

It has been quite a few years since I was in college but for my generation there was no such thing as being allowed to skip a course simply because one already knew the material. I am aware that things have changed quite a bit and perhaps some very liberal colleges allow skipping of courses for qualified students but when that is allowed accreditation becomes shaky.
I can recall asking to be allowed to take a final exam on the first day of a course and it was forbidden. But I did have certain professors who simply allowed me to go to the library and do as I wished and they simply asked whether I wanted an A or a B for each semester. They were cheating in allowing me that privilege.
I suspect that with your online courses you could move ahead at your own pace. If so simply cram and run the gauntlet and get the credits quickly. I suspect that it boils down to spending money for something that you dislike.
Also, in the past collaboration between students was actually frowned upon. One did one's work privately and submitted it for grading. The social part of college distilled down to catching girls for most of us.
If you decide to go for a conventional form of education make certain that you are not fooled. Not only must the school be accredited but the department must be fully accredited and often the department is not. That devalues your degree severely. Then make certain that the accrediting body is the exact one that accredits the big state universities in your region. Do not fall for the rotten, private college, nonsense accreditation bodies.

  11. Don't Forget on The End of Forgetting · · Score: 1

I see no reason not to remember all things. And as for people with bad incidents in their past that is just fine. After all if everyones' bad moments are recorded others may also notice that one person has a lot less bad moments than others. Or a seemingly shocking nude photo becomes meaningless when almost all of the teachers have nude photos on the net.
Instead of the notion of allowing people to escape from their past would it not be better, even for children, to really, deeply know that all mistakes will travel with them throughout their lives. The idea being that if people can not escape past errors then they will tend not to make errors.

  12. It's A False Argument! on Louisiana, Intelligent Design, and Science Classes · · Score: 2, Interesting

Obviously there was nothing or is nothing to stop the Lord from using evolution as a tool in creating this universe. What the illiterate right wind desires is to teach that the Bible is an absolute source. And that is absurd. I am a Christian and value the Bible as much as anyone can. However the under educated simply don't get it. They lack language skills. The Holy Bible is an inspired work. It is certainly at the very top of literature. That does not mean that it is a perfect work. Leonardo was inspired but if he had it to do over again ever painting that he created would be a bit different. Dwayne Wade is inspired when he plays his best basketball. Inspired does not equal perfect.
So we are left with some right wing Christians who wish to disguise an argument about the absolute perfection of the Word taking an idiotic position. On the other side of the argument we have a science community that is all too aware that given an inch the ignorant will leap to gain a mile and therefore the notion that God would by definition have the ability to design and use evolution must be avoided, in their minds, at all costs.
And make no mistake. The miserable right has a few loonies who can break out with violent acts over these nonsense type of arguments.

Perhaps I am now misinformed but as I understand it liability for content never exists unless some censorship takes place on a network. Therefore it would seem to me that the very last thing one would ever want to do is look at any form of content flowing through a network.
But I can not see failure to hand over a password being a crime. It may well have wreaked havoc with a system but that was not Terry's problem nor if he was dismissed did he have any obligation to hand over anything to a former employer. The fact that the employer did not have more than one way to access and control that network had nothing to do with Terry. The city was sloppy and negligent.

  22. That Damned Duh Factor on Blogetery Shutdown Due To al-Qaeda Info · · Score: 1

There are a thousand ways to say it but our government is simply wasting effort and money with this bomb nonsense. Anyone who ever took a decent chemistry courses or even courses in other sciences surely knows how to make bombs. If they are such mental midgets that all science education somehow missed them then going to a library and studying a bit of chemistry would teach them all that they would need to know.
And it gets even funnier. I watched a TV show last night on Secrets of the CIA. One of the items was the making of bomb fuses in occupied areas. They were talking fuses designed to go off hours or even days after the bomb was set and they did not use clocks.
Frankly I can not fathom any reason for not letting information about bomb building being in books or on the net. One huge issue in chemistry is that a student may very well make a fairly potent explosive by accident. It actually happens and real injuries take place even though the samples made by accident are usually very small. They very way that you teach a student how not to create explosives auto instructs them on just how to build explosives. You can't create a safe lab environment without some training in how not to blow up the lab.
So save our tax money and chase a more worthwhile goal. And while doing so keep in mind that if we are ever occupied by a foreign enemy making bombs is a really handy skill for large numbers of the population to be able to implement.

Florida has an answer to appeals trials. One is required to post the sum awarded by the lower court as well as a hefty fee to appear before an appeal court. Since it takes three or four years to get to trial as a rule the lost interest on the money as well as the build up of ongoing legal fees generally rules out any hope of an appeal trial giving relief. Then just to put the frosting on the cake the superior court often rules that the case must be kicked down to the first level and decided from scratch all over again. Then it takes another year to get back to court and get a ruling and there is no guarantee that the case will not be appealed a second time. This turns into a case lasting for fifteen years with expenses so great that the person fighting the uphill side of the battle will drown before it is over.
