  1. Re:Yeah on The Laidoff Ninja · · Score: 1

I ran into a similar issue in the days before computers existed. We had an awful local recession with a really absurd lack of available jobs with numerous employers shutting down. Everywhere I applied I got the answer that I would not be hired as I had skills and would quit as soon as jobs opened back up again. Oddly those with zero skills were in better shape as there were jobs designed for them all over the local landscape.
After I had had enough suffering with patch work and get by situations I went and started my own company. Although I worked way too hard and way too many hours I actually earned a lot of money. That was right before the IRS tried to end my financial existence.
My advice is to start your own outfit and use a very, very good CPA constantly as you go. Having a good lawyer at hand also tends to help. My lawyers were more than a little bet useful as they managed to turn no pays into paying customers rather quickly.

  9. It's A Great Law on Arizona "Papers, Please" Law May Hit Tech Workers · · Score: 1

In order to be a nation every nation must control its borders. In the case of the US it is more than blatantly obvious that the majority of people in Mexico, Central and South America as well as numerous nations far away all would like to immigrate to the US. If we do not lock down our borders we risk being totally over run with immigrants. Pakistan and India alone would destroy us if we did not keep control of immigration.
I don't think it is a big deal at all for people to carry a wallet with either a driver's license or state ID which enables law enforcement to easily verify their status. And raiding businesses that hire illegal immigrants should result in the seizure of the businesses. If law enforcement does its job we will have no illegal immigrants at all in America.

It would be sort of nice if your own defense department created a grade B missile that was very cheap to make and use. After all a gifted fellow has hand built this type of missile very cheaply and that is what we really need. Unless a missile is carrying a nuclear device or something far more destructive than conventional explosives the band for the buck when delivered does not justify using the device.

  11. Fear on Why Making Money From Free Software Matters · · Score: 1

Yes, Open Source and free software do cross more lines than many people suspect. They also cross lines that the wrong people suspect. Oddly the same issue exists with Christianity in some areas. Communism vs. capitalism is a dangerous and non productive battle. Many powerful people do not separate communism from socialism in their thoughts. If Open Source is perceived as socialist then there is actually a certain danger attached. In South America there has been an ongoing slaughter of religious leaders as the powerful perceive Christianity as a danger to their wealth. Perhaps many people who support Open Source consider it more of a social justice action than having anything to do with socialism. But at the end of the day you can bet your last penny that governments take an intense and covert interest in Open Source to continuously assess whether or not it is a threat. And you can bet that big companies such as Microsoft push governments to restrict Open Source.
For my two cents I would like to see computing move further beyond the constraints of businesses and governments. I do not want every aspect of my existence welded to the almighty dollar or the rule of law.
