  2. Leftover Corporate Paraphernalia on America's Worst Christmas Parties · · Score: 2, Interesting

Our office Christmas party is typically a potluck lunch in the conference room on a Friday afternoon. The feast consists of meatballs, crappy beer, and way too many pumpkin pies. Each year management offers up a handful of door prizes to keep people from leaving early. This generally consists of pens, tote bags, day planners, and other items all proudly sporting the corporate logo. They sometimes throw in a $25 Starbucks gift card for good measure.

A few years back I made the mistake of bringing my wife to the party. One of the prizes that year was a company calendar. During the drawing our boss quipped that it was a calendar from the previous year. Well, my wife won, and turns out it *was* a leftover from the previous year. The office admin promised to order a replacement, but of course it never came. My wife left the calendar on the conference room table in protest and vowed to never attend another company event.

This year was the same meatball spectacular but families weren't invited. Wait, I just thought of my New Year's Resolution!

    Happy Holidays Everyone! :-)

"This film is a sequel in name only to Valley of the Dolls (1967). An all-girl rock band goes to Hollywood to make it big. There they find success, but luckily for us, they sink into a cesspool of decadence. This film has a sleeping woman performing on a gun which is in her mouth. It has women posing as men. It has lesbian sex scenes. It is also written by Roger Ebert, who had become friends with Russ Meyer after writing favorable reviews of several of his films. "

It's often more about the journey than the destination. The goal here isn't just to get an answer for the submitter, but to start a discussion, exchange ideas, and possibly introduce 'systems engineering' to people who haven't heard of it. The fact that it means different things everywhere is even more reason to get people talking about it.

Very true. I spent a month getting my 0.16 box stable and I still run into new quirks on occasion. If I try to start a recording while watching live TV -- frontend crashes. If I leave live TV paused for more than 5 minutes -- frontend crashes.

Apparently the record button bug is a known issue in 0.16, but the developers didn't think it was serious enough to warrant a minor follow-up release. The fix? Skip the RPMs and debs and start running the latest from CVS.

I've always wanted a small device to carry on trips for easy e-mail/web access without having to drag a laptop, clunky batteries, and a large power supply around. Ideally something with built-in ethernet, modem, and possibly WiFi. A small keyboard, even the thumb type, would be better than dealing with handwriting recognition or a screen-based hunt and pick keyboard.

Any suggestions? I gave up looking years ago. I tried a Palm IIIx with a foldable keyboard and modem, but soon realized they couldn't connect at the same time. I'd settle for a cheap used Libretto if I could find one cheap enough.
