Can anyone recommend some good books on it - more overview stuff?
I'm serious - I'd like to read something good on it. I understand the basics - voice sent over IP, but want to read about whatever other abilities it has that makes it so damn complex. It seems pretty simple to me.
I guess a lot of the complexity comes from tying it into the POTS, but in my simple mind, a headset on a PC and some H.323/T.120/whatever spec it is software would take care of it on the client end.
Though it seems a lot of the stuff seems to be special network gear to tie it into the current POTS headsets. To me, someone could make a killing by just making a server with a PRI connector or two and client software. Sell headsets for $20 and profit.
These vaporware announcements must stop. Already since Linus announced this I have noticed a drop-off in downloads of the 2.4 kernel.
These anti-competitive practices need to be stopped. A kernel-lead developer such as Linus should have to compete on the same level as everyone else for his kernel to get used.:)

I dunno...an emp burst right in the middle of one of the competitons - takes out all of them at once.
Of course it doesn't help that not all of our hardware supports 802.1x..to much legacy equipment (though it's being replaced as funds allow).
I suppose that some sort of VPN would be another way - anything that forces the user to authenticate vs trusting that who they were last week (MAC) is the same as this week.
We are a school going through the same question - should we setup 802.1x on everything or should we just put a firewall in place that you have to register you NIC with to do anything?
For the FW solution, it is possible to falsify a MAC, but not something your average user would do (though VMWare makes it trivial).
For the 802.1x solution, you have the issues of different cards, drivers, implentations, and then the question of people who wanna run Linux, *BSD, etc... can't just cut them/me off:)
It's the "sue everyone" mentality. You never know when you might be able to get money out of them.
Upset that you got fired for downloading porn at work - well, sue the company for the internet connection, the isp that served the porn, the photographer that took the picture, and the "model".
Bet the farm on some software you didn't test? Why take responsibility for not doing your job. Go on a witch hunt instead.
My brother-in-law was travelling in Europe. He was talking to someone in a bar in Belgium about his travels and how he was getting ready to go find a room for the night. The guy gave him the keys to his flat to use for the night since he was going to be elsewhere.
My brother-in-law asked if he was sure becasue he didn't even know him. The guy said something about "if I was in America people would do the same right."
I agree...he seems to be bragging that he has a 19" rack in the basement. Other than that - so what. He ran some cables and found that your normal house builder doesn't give a rats ass about doing coax decently.
What's next? a THG 10 page article on patch cords with the final resolution being to just buy the ones at the store.
I seem to remember in some bio of Tolien that I read once that he did start a sequal to LotR - I thought it was called "The Return of the Shadow".
I could be wrong - it's been about 15 years since I read those bios. If he did, chances are it's in some Christopher Tolkien book somewhere. And even if it's just a paragraph, they just need to get someone who writes Stephen King movies based on his books - they usually only have about that much in common:)
Of course, they can still do The Hobbit, The Simarillion, Lost Tales, etc...:) Of course, technically they'd all be prequels.
That would be Dennis McKiernan. (or something like that) Iron Tower/Silver Call books. However, in his defense, he does claim that he did write them that way - something to match Tolkien's epic style/story - however, there are WAY to many similarities and does almost have a one-to-one mapping - including a race that are short peopel who, while living in their isolated world, make the difference.
Anyway, if you like Tolkien and wanna read something (very) similar, they aren't that bad.
I wanted to do something similar, but the other direction.
I wanted to have mics around the house in lots of the rooms. I want to be able to walk into the bedrom and say "lights on" and have the computer turn the lights in that room on - I don't wanna have to say "master bedroom lights on".
I really am not sure how this would be done. I'm guessing there would need to be some sort of intermediate box that would pass the audio through, and at the same time be able to indicate to the computer which input it received a signal (or the strongest signal) on.
Because my neighboor owns an x-box. There is no way he could/would mod-chip it. However, if there was something he could download from the net and burn on a CD-R, he'd probably do it.
A hardware mod is something that MS knows will happen, but probably in a very small number of the sold boxes. A software hack that the average joe could use - well, then it'd get more widespread
One of the nice things about Sonar is the (with the addon) ability to take a midi track made up of soundfonts and render it to a wav for a final mix.
That seems to be about the only major thing I would consider missing (the VST plugin "almost-support" was a surprise. Wonder if they could get DirectX plugin support via wine or something as well.)
This isn't the first time that the popular vote did not agree with the electoral college. Remember - us normal average citizens are too dumb to elect someone directly (see: Florida) so we have this other body to do so on our behalf.
I dunno...I'll be out and about and will see a sign some where like "saves you 20%" and the first thing that pops in my head is "In soviet russia 20% saves you" or something.
Wow...I'd almost forgotten about that - the old Amazon Used Book service. It helped me track down a few things. Made it a lot easier than having to pop around to tons of used book stores, some which were a pain to deal with for various reasons (annoying owners, no ac, etc...)
There is probably a reason that the bottom dropped out in the mid 90s. I know that's when I left. Both DC and Marvel were going nuts. Every other issue had some special cover. Every story line was a cross-over event that you couldn't follow without buying into 12 titles. Every other page was a splash page - one big ass graphic.
The problem is they stopped the story telling in favor of gimmicks. Even now, while the art is amazing in the current books, you still have tons of pages that are half taken up with one image "for effect", and it seems every female is a victoria secret model.
I'll admit I have a lot of the old (nigh unobtainable) X-men commics in cbr/cbz format (ie. scanned pages in a rar/zip) and read them with CDisplay. I don't mind reading them on the monitor - why? Because the stories are good. The only thing I've bought recently was the latest Frank Miller Dark Knight Strikes Again...a good self-containted story spread over a few issues - just like the older comics were.
Of course, just like music, you don't have to buy the mainstream stuff. And just like music - just because it's indie doesn't automatically mean that it is good. Some of it is, a lot is crap. Cerebus is probably the only thing that is REALLY worth following:)
So if they think that comics on the web will save the industry, they'll need to correct the underlying problems first. They'll probably wanna charge for this, so they need to stop making you need to follow tons of titles for one story. Can you imagine if they had the ability to use flash or something to make an issue - tits would be flying around like crazy and splash screens would scroll for five minutes.
Until they fix the greed they are fucked and will continue to spiral down.

Or am I really oversimplifying it?
Not only do I not like seafood, but looking at underwater life just turns my stomach.
The fish don't bother me, but the crabs and other oddball forms are just too weird. Everything is either spiny or gooey.
Blech!!!

There are some things in this world, no matter how outrageous they may seem that could turn out to be fact.
:)
But c'mon - at least be realisitic - using Duke Nukem Forever and finish in the same sentance?
My four year old pointed to the screen and laughed at that

Something to read up on this weekend.
The WEP doesn't really concern me too much - though it is a nice bonus :)
:)
We provide SSL/TLS access to web/ftp/email for our services. To me, it is up to the end user to make sure they are encrypted when need be.
BUT - if we can get it as a bonus, I'll be glad to have it

I love my MS Natural keyboard for the fact that my wrists don't hurt nearly as much.
But I really love the old keyboards with their feel. I really wish someone would make a combo one - old technology meets new design.

Tell your friend to counter with the Shake, SoftImage, Maya - not free, but on Linux...guess only serious software works on Linux.

1) perhaps the viewer will equate coke with addictions and avoid it so they don't also get addicted.
2) perhaps the viewer will get fed up with episodes based around Joey's coke addiction.
3) perhaps the viewer likes all but that one particular character on the show and sees that character likes coke so avoids it.
4) perhaps the actor goes out and kills someone, etc... and the product tie-in is mentioned in all the papers.
Then again, you can have some of the same problems with commercials - T-Mobile makes me think of C-Zeta Jones pregnant and smoking.
