Biodisel is a bad solution to the oil problems in america. Why? Because if 50% of cars on the road today had biodeisel, then the price would skyrocket. Why? Although McD's produces a ton of greaseburgers, there simply won't be enough used oil to produce enough fuel for everyone. Wish I had the link to the stats... I'll google around and give the link.
Actually, I like the choice of chefs... There's a chef to love (Batali), a chef to hate (Flay), and a chef that just floors you on how he can make any ingredients into something amazing (Puck).
My only complaint to that was the floor reporter is a complete idiot. He had no idea what was going on, and didn't even seem to pay attention. There was more than one occasion that AB answered his own questions (on stuff like "what went into that blender?" Isn't that the whole point of the floor announcers job???).
Oh, and that salt episode was pretty good. He finally explains his obsession with salt:-)
You are thinking of two things... a cook makes a meal (much like in Otters reply), a chef makes new dishes. Alton is NOT a chef, and he makes sure that he's pretty clear in his shows and books that he is NOT a chef. He shows how to cook something and gives you the scientific insight to know what is going on while doing it. This insight COULD give someone enough knowledge to make his/her own dishes (which some artistic thinking as well), but the insight, itself, is science, not art.
Alton, himself, never calls himself a chef. In fact, he isn't trying to make you into one. He just perfects simplier dishes... and encourages people, especially geeks, to "play with their food" and understand whats going on when you do!
A true physicist may not like "Bill Nye" or "Mr.Wizard" because they do silly experiments with children, but it encourages people to delve more into science even more... Alton is much like the Mr Wizard of cooking... encouraging 'us kids' to cook and understand what's going on when we do it. And just like how Mr.Wizard didn't teach you how to make a nuclear reacture our of kitchen supplies, AB doesn't teach you how to perfect a $500 cavier/froi gras dish.
You hate AB, but anyone that DOES watch the show will easily put AB's infamous "French Chef" voice on when reading your entry.;-)
I have an OT question. Does Rob sit at the slashdot headquarters on Wednesday and say "It compiles... must be ok to push straight to production!" And then spend all day Thursday trying to fix all the mistakes that simple user testing would have found in a heartbeat? Do you have unit tests? Do you think the users enjoy playing tester Thursdays?
Seriously, there should be AT LEAST a development server, integration server, and staging server before hitting the production server. Its pathetic how unprofessional this 'popular' site is.
Now, to remain on topic, games like Civ3 and stuff teach history to a point, but specifics still need to be taught through books and lectures.
Sorry, but starcraft players do not play Doom3 (in general)
They do if they are professional developers
You sir, are the asshole
Hey, I didn't get nasty until someone insulted me and my job.
RTS games (like StarCraft) are always lower specced than their FPS counterparts. You can get a good 3 years of worth out of a PC with RTS games.
Honestly, if you look at the newer FPS, like WC3, you'll notice they are getting more and more graphics intensive. Sure, not to Doom3 specs, but, as I said before, pro gamers will be more profitable with FPS than RTS. You simply get more variety in FPS's.
Geez, I hope it has nothing to do with making purchasing decisions for your company if you think you have to throw a significant portion of a 6-figure salary at staying competitive in StarCraft.
Yeah, I'd be wasting money, you are absolutely right. Keep that old P2 running starcraft, and stay competitive...
...for the next two years its still in competition. Now while the intelligent gamers were upgrading to play games like Doom3 professionally, you are stuck with superb skills in starcraft, a five year old machine, and 2 years behind your competition.
Yeah yeah, I knew it when I read it (no need to get hostile... sorry for ruining your idea for being a professional gamer)... but its only starcraft cause that game is still wildly popular in SK. In the US, its still a played game, but the audience would prefer to see Quake3 (And soon Doom3) tournaments. I guess CS would be popular for a while, but the top games are what is played around here.
You're better off becoming a professional musician or pro athelete than a pro gamer.
Sure, the TOP GAMERS make over 200k a year (BTW - being a pro gamer also means you need to buy bleeding edge technology, so that 200k isn't much after you subtract your monthly computer upgrade budget), but most hardly make any... not to mention that you not only have to be fabulous with one game, but with at least one new game ever year or so. If you take a break, or have an off year or two, you are in debt.
Seriously. If the 'big gaming company' took more risks (hell, they are big enough to take risks) on innovative games instead of working on sequels to games or the latest shooter, the gaming industry would be more exciting.
Instead, we are fed the same old games.
But can you blame them? Works in hollywood like a charm.
The reason I play football games is so I can be the Steelers, not teamA with a bunch of unknowns. In fact, I can start a Madden game, and immediately know the strengths and weaknesses of my own team, along with my opponent, because I watch real football. I know players by name, who to double team, when the best time to blitz, etc... If you don't have that, you are creating a game with a HUUUGE learning curve. That will kill any competitor game.
EA is trying to go for the monopoly in the gaming industry and is probably cornered the gaming market for PC games. Nintendo and Sony have some power in the consoles, but this is a reach to take hold of the sports part of the consoles.
Total War (there's Shogun, Medieval, and soon Roman) gives you control over battalians, much like a field general, but once they engage, you have to sit and watch what happens. Some retreat, and you can't order them back, some will get too much adrenaline and keep attacking, even if you ask them to fall back, and it isn't total death... eventually the losers will start running, and, unless you have a great deal of horses, they usually escape. Truely a fantastic RTS. Definately worth trying.
but that's where your highest-moderated questions led
No, that's where the highest-moderated questions you sent him led. There was a good variety of questions, some a little harsher than others, but I would have enjoyed reading his response to some of them. Granted, there is a lot of score:5's in the 'question' article, but I think you could have done a bit better on the variety of questions asked.
Like TitanAE? Animated movies for adults ONLY appeal to the anime geek, and its not enough business to recoup the costs of making it. The only way to make a profit is to make a kids movie with adult jokes and stuff to appeal to the parents. Pixar knows this formula, and uses it perfectly.
Honestly, the only reason OSNews has anything on it, is because Eugena is rabid about BeOS. She'll never let it go.
... slashdot, check...
... patent office, check...
... FCC, check...
... TV? Well, we have foxnews and soon-to-be AlGores Democratic-fest channel.... check
So... who's left to troll?
Which is why you get your grease at dunkin donuts or tim hortons. Mmmmm.... donuts.... EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE! ;-)

...mind hooking me up with that 'free hardware'? I don't need a subscription to your software yet, just the free hardware, thanks.

OK, I already said this once...

That's your snobby 'chef side' talking.

Not testing before making production changes, or jailing P2P users??
Only thing worse than a spammer is someone who pushes untested code to a production server. Wonder how much time they'll give someone like that?

This may be coming up because of Orkut's Terms of Service Conspiracy Theories that keep popping up (orkut is owned by google).

Fallout had the idea... and a MUD... a simple text based game... implements a similar (yet much less robust) feature, and its a slashdot article?
/. worthy.
MUDs are old and only have a cult following. A new MUD feature is really not

of course you have to install all of it in the bathroom... to truely game on 'the throne'! ;-)

Here's hoping the "Bruce Willis/Armageddon" jokes don't start up. They are almost as old as making jokes about windows crashing.
