Don't knock cubicles, man. I admit, I did have problems at first adjusting to cubicle life. But after a few years the urge to flee fades completely. Also, I have grown accustomed to the feelings of comfort and security that having my own designated cube to sit in provides me. It's nice knowing exactly where you're going to be for the 8+ hours you will be working. My life is better for the regimentation provided by cubicles.

Now if you will excuse me, it's 1:30 p.m. and time for my afternoon urination.

Back in my day, onions were called "stink blossoms" and were used by young gentlemen to court their lady friends (the smell was thought to ward off unhealthy humours). And we didn't have no fancy ee-lec-tronic mp3 players to listen to our music as we walked. No, we had to strap a hand-crank phonograph to our chests if we wanted to have portable music, and we had to change the wax cylinders every time we wanted to listen to a new song.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to dance the Charleston when you have over a hundred pounds of musical gear and recordings about your person? We looked so comical that the ladies of the time would simply laugh at us and turn up their noses. It was so difficult to get a lady interested in you that the entire human race was in danger! Fortunately, the complete lack of prophylactics helped to ensure both a new generation of human beings and of STD's.

Errrm... There's really no point to this other than the fact that I'm really tired and my caffeine just wore off. Sorry, please move along.

Leveling in non-standard areas is one of the great reasons to have a static party. My static avoided the standard spots like the plague. We were one of the first parties to try beetles at the anthill in Altepa (which has since become a "standard" spot, at least on my server). Absolutely no competition, anywhere up to chain 7 on IT beetles (LOVE the distortion chains with Blizzard MB!) and no risk of getting grief from other parties.

Still, on the odd occasion we needed a fill-in member for the party, we often had a hard time convincing them that Altepa was the place to go. Once they got there, however, all complaints ceased :)

Yeah, the fact that you HAVE to party in FFXI in order to get decent xp is a little annoying (and the main reason why I switched from level 62 RDM to BST, at least for the time being), but it makes a certain amount of sense in the game. If you're in a good party, it gets really fun. You can focus on your job and the xp just rolls in. The part that I absolutely hate is the crap shoot involved in trying to find a group... even as a RDM I'm sometimes seeking for a while, and a lot of times the party I get invited to just sucks. It's really too bad that my static party disintigrated, that was the best time I ever had leveling.

And it's mostly from our own government! At the rate we're going, in another 10,000 years, Mars will be covered with our obsolete scientific equipment, which often contains highly toxic chemicals! Just another example of how we simply have to destroy every environment we come across.

The Sony HDD thing really did do a lot to piss off a lot of Square fans... The only thing preventing the launch of FFXI in the US was that damned hard drive, which Sony kept delaying. Considering that getting Square on board in the early days was such a huge boost to the original Playstation's success, you'd think that Sony would be a little more thoughtful of the fans that gave them that success, and mindful of what happens when a content developer with a huge following gets annoyed enough to jump platforms (like Square did with Nintendo... over hardware issues, amongst other things, IIRC).

And now, their "new and improved" PS2 (sorry, PStwo, or as I like to call it, PoS Too) doesn't even support the damned drive. If you play FFXI on the PS2, you'd better pray your old console never dies, or you're out of luck.

I'm not sure that these changes that SE are rolling out are only due to the WoW release, although that may have had some influence. The gilsellers have only really been an issue for the last few months, that I've noticed. Yes, they've been there longer then that, but they've been getting increasingly more disruptive and harder to ignore.

It was only about four months ago that I really started to hear people complain about them. I imagine it would take about that long for SE to think of, code, and test a solution to the problem. Their previous top priority (and rightly so, in my opinion) was the latest expansion to add new content. Fixing exploits and getting rid of cheaters is nice, adding new and exciting content is even better :)

But it's difficult to say what really happened. When you have that many people together, in an emotionally charged environment, small things can trigger large incidents.

I've personally seen this happen before, during Critical Mass (an event where a large number of bicyclists essentially take over the streets). The police were keeping an eye on the situation, and 99% of the participants were well-behaved. Then a few people broke the law (ran a red light) and suddenly the police began chasing people down, yanking them off their bikes (which were tossed onto a flatbed truck) and arresting a few who protested the unfair treatment.

At this particular protest, there may have been a few hotheads in the front (there usually are) who decided to push the police. Then the police (who were probably just waiting for an excuse anyway) treated the whole crowd as potentially hostile, instead of just the agitators. Did the police over-react? I'd say yes. But I wasn't at that protest, so I can't say for sure. My advice is, if you are holding a protest, always have someone who is some distance away film the entire event. Heck, have several, from different vantage points. That way, if the police aren't justified in their actions, you have the proof right there, and proper steps can be taken.

Close to where I live, there was a tanning parlor where the owner had installed hidden "security cameras" (yeah, right) to spy on the nekkid women while they tanned. When an outraged customer who noticed the camera went to the police, she was told that they couldn't do anything, since the owner had the right to install surveillance on his property, and he even had a sign on the front door (along with a noticeable security camera, watching the register) stating that there were security cameras on-site. That tanning business is closed, though. Word got out about what was going on, and he lost too much business to keep open. So, the theaters can do pretty much whatever they want as far as surveillance, but if they make it too uncomfortable for people, they'll end up closing down. Which is a sad thing, since its the studio pushing this, not the theaters. The studio's actions could drive away the theater's business.

That entirely depends on your viewpoint... if you want a captain who is very capable and will most likely get you out of any dangerous situation, go with Picard. If you want a "party" captain (bring on the green alien chicks!) go with Kirk. Up to you, really. Kirk is much more likely to throw a ship-wide kegger than Picard, but Picard is a little less likely to make you wear a red shirt, beam you down to an unknown alien world and send you off to investigate behind that big pile of rocks while the officers all chat a safe distance away.
