There are plenty of local linux user groups that do similar things in the States, but not on as grand a scale of course.

For example, there is the Colorado Linux Users & Enthusiasts group here that did an installfest a few months ago.

Do a bit of searching and see if you can find one in your area.

This is commonly called a KVM (Keyboard-Video-Mouse). When I was a student at CSM they installed this kind of system in all the labs in the new tech building. The teacher's ability to control all the student's desktop machines (or spy on them) should be incentive enough to prevent them from doing malicious/unproductive things.

Of course, I never got to take a class using one of these labs, but I did get to play with the systems when they were first installed at any rate.

Well to be fair, you probably wouldn't consider doing something like this for high-volume deployment (ie corporate/enterprise level). Chances are, they already have some kind of Cisco or other big box in place anyways.

However, for SOHO applications, this could save people thousands of dollars (especially small-to-medium businesses).

If you can find a way to mount the linux partition where your grub.conf is loaded, then you could do this. But afaik, there is no ext2/ext3 filesystem driver for windows.

You'll have to reboot into linux, edit grub.conf (usually under /boot), and then reboot again to see the change take effect.

Ok, so perhaps openSSL was a bad example, but perhaps a for-profit OSS outfit like RedHat could suffer a similar fate.

I doubt that this case will get very far though, MS's lawyers, armed with the EULA will put the smack down I'm sure.

  17. Precedent? on Microsoft Sued for Defective Software · · Score: 3, Insightful

Although the zealots will be amused by this story, this could set a dangerous precedent for other similar vulnerabilities (especially unintentional ones). What happens, for example, when some group of people (in this case, a country) decides to sue the openSSL group for a flaw in their encryption that allowed credit card numbers to be stolen?

I'm glad to see that someone is trying to hold MS liable for their mistakes, but this is the wrong way to go about it.

  18. Re:Can it record? on 60G Nomad Zen vs. The iPod · · Score: 1

Right. The strength of the old Jukeboxes is the ability to run a linein straight from the mixer, and record for hours on end (on the 20G model, that amounts to about 28hours as raw wav or 200 hours as 192kbit mp3).

If the only thing that the Zen can record is FM signals, then I'm not interested. Why they would remove the feature of being able to do line-in recording is beyond me.

  19. Can it record? on 60G Nomad Zen vs. The iPod · · Score: 3, Insightful

The selling point for me is if it can record like the Jukebox 2/3. This is key when you want to record your dj sets at clubs or parties (which I have done many times using the older Jukebox models).
