You can't tell this in pictures but in 'real life' it seems to float. It reminds me of mercury actually, in a sense. The Apple logo inside, especially, floats within it. But it's useless. Despite repeated phone calls, Comcast and Earthlink still say service in my area is "a year or two out". This is pathetic, truly.

They say it's "too expensive" to branch out into new areas -- but surely it's less expensive then not reaching new customers! I wish there were a solution. Europe's way ahead in wireless technology, too.

Anyway, the thing you love best about FF, I hate the most. My whole problem with FF is that they DO keep everything basically the same, and these "interesting twists" simply aren't enough to keep me playing for another six sequels.

They ARE sequels, contrary to what you say. The game engines are very much related, if not the same, the graphics are the same (though improving based ont he console), and the gameplay is very similar. Changing up characters and the plot doesn't make it a new, unique game, when you feel like despite such changes, you're sitll playing the same game.

Nevertheless, I do have respect for Square.. because despite the fact I no longer like the game at all, they are extremely successful and should continue to be. Just cause ONE of their customers (me) so far has defected doesn't really matter. :-)

Being able to hook up my PS2 (which I just bought and love) to a multiplayer version of Sega NFL 2K2. Network playoffs! Awesome! WarCraft III for PS2! ;-)

Still.. one problem remains. I can't get cable modem service where I live! So i suppose it's all for nothing. I doubt these games would play all that great over some 56K hookup, and I do NOT put up with lag. It ruins the experience.

In fact, the new Office for Mac OS X is, in my opinion, much BETTER than the Windows version.

Networking has been faster, too, and that's important to us. You'd never believe it, but it's cheaper too. No more calling for technical support or having someone on duty to fix problems with our systems. You just don't need it with a Mac because the hardware and software is so well integrated.

The machines themselves have been CHEAPER for us. $1199 iMacs as clients and G4s to handle some of the heavier loads. It's worked great.

And by the way... that 22" Apple flat screen is not only beautiful for working with, but it impresses customers too. I know it seems like a detail, but people have gotten the impression we're an upscale successful business because they see those screens and comment on them.

I'm biased toward Macs because I've had great experiences with them in newspapers and graphic designs and web design.. and now I'm having success in the field of Unix, too.

Again, my judgement isn't clouded, I simply pointed out a situation that involved a very stupid mistake where they bought Wintel boxes. The point wasn't so much the machines but rather the error made, to clarify.

I'm sure you're not overpaid if you're working 70 hours a week. You're a most humbly welcomed exception to the experiences I've had...

  21. The Way IT Works on A Strategic Comparison of Windows Vs. Unix · · Score: 2

What we *really* need is a study of how many overpaid IT managers there are in existance, and study how much money you could save if you used people of logic and intelligence instead.

    For example:

At a not-to-be-named newspaper in the northeast (where I may or may not work ;) -- IT managers work with the budget guys to buy 1.5x more than they need. Why? Because they know that if they don't, managers will say the following year (when perhaps something new really IS needed) -- "Well, you didn't need that last year, so we won't put it in the budget."

The rest of the excise equipment is "borrowed" for months by employees. Titanium PowerBooks are the most frequent to go (though i can't blame anyone for that ;)

Another IT example, this one bearing solely on the responsibility of the IT staff.

An IT manager at a sorta-major company grew up around Windows, and is very anti-Mac. So, when IT was given the power to decide what computers to buy this year, he went after Windows PCs.... for a graphics/web content company. The result? Employees who refuse to use the Windows systems, and instead use year-old Mac systems instead. When the employees wanted OS X installed, IT went ballistic because they'd "spent so much money" on new Windows and had planned to adopt XP early over a period of time.

You'd be surprised how easily and often this stuff happens. I'm not saying it's common, but I've heard so many stories -- of which those two I am personally related, unfortunately.

    So, Windows or Unix?

How about whichever you want -- but do it efficiently and effectively. If Unix continues to receive support (esp. if Mac OS X continues to receive support -- and OS X Server), Windows and OS X will be very very similar feature-wise. And price-wise, too I'm sure (don't give the "Macs are 2x more expensive!"-routine. My $1299 iBook beats the heck out of a $1600 Dell laptop.. that is ugly, too).

Inevitably, it may very well to cleaning out some management and saving money that way. EFFICIENT Corporate America.

  23. The Only Way? on Municipal Networks as Alternative to Commercial Broadband? · · Score: 4, Interesting

This might be the only way to get broadband out there faster. The way it is today, service providers are stuck in a corner. They know the demand is out there for broadband. People DO want it, for the most part. They also know that broadband (DSL, for example), has certain requirements like distance which can hinder performance.

So if I live too far from the main DSL switch building, too bad for me! Also, broadband is dependent on the physical characteristics of a customer zone. If I live in an area with old cable networks and nasty phone lines... that just adds to list of what must be upgraded.

So the service providers must be content for now in offering to the few. (I live in a very snazzy community with a lot of money. All of them would buy broadband, yet nobody can get it. So even with guaranteed customers (and hundreds of them), it still might not be profitable!)

Having municipal networks would really bring broadband out. I'm all for it. If we let the markets do it themselves, it'll take years. Not that municipal networks would suddenly spring up overnight, but they would guarantee more broadband (significantly so) and would guarantee a standard and central office from which others could branch themselves.

Having government doing stuff private businesses normally do can have very good effects in certain situations...
