    Social isolation and physical confinement played a part as well.

    I don't believe any successful European settlement of North America began with a base as small as twenty. I expect alcohol would become a problem. I expect suicide would become a problem.

    However, anything that promotes the use of computer science and technology to students who are crap at languages (like I was) cannot be that bad.

    The UK has somewhat different customs in this area (and possibly different laws). I recall reading a comment a few months ago from someone in the UK talking about how many more cars get through a green light in the UK than the US because the UK drivers are all ready to start moving as soon as the light is green, rather than waiting for the car in front of them to move before taking their foot off the brake. It is perhaps unwise, but if that's the habit, it's more understandable.

    No, it's because in the US the light sequence is Red -> Green, in the UK it's Red -> Red+Yellow -> Green so the drivers are reacting faster and skewing the stats.

    In fact most are moving on the Red+Yellow part of the sequence.

    Why would suicide be illegal? Where I live it isn't. How could be someone prohibited from suicide save livelong incarceration in a padded cell?

    I'm pretty sure Russia also has their own PRISM.

    I expect Snowden knows that and probably has a PPT slide on it.

    There's no way he (or Wikileaks) would make that information public - because of his asylum request. Plus if he did Russia would put him on a plane to the US.

  19. Out in the 'burbs of SOCAL I get 12MB from Cox. It's good enough for what I use it for, I don't stream live video. I do a lot of web presentations with not many problems.

    What pisses me off is the general throttling for torrent and NZB/NNTP downloads. About 200k.

    MythTV is a great concept but for a single point of getting HD material TiVo is the best, MythTV seems hard to configure (and I'm technical-ish). It's not for mainstream use.

    TiVo just works. Expensive, yes, but I am happy I got what I paid for. I am on my third box now (since 2000).

    People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.
