  7. Re:Apple's iPhone is much less significant. on Predicting The Google Phone · · Score: 1

The only *REAL* problem with the iPhone is AT&T.

$399 is hardly the classic Apple price tag. Yeah sure there is the 2yr service agreement, but anyone buying an iPhone probably has budgeted that into their lives for a while now anyway.

For the innovative interface and the included function of the device, this has to be one of Apple's LEAST "over priced" products. People keep saying "It's just a phone." It's a wifi enabled multifunction device, and yes a proper SDK is still vaporware, but it's coming. Try buying a wifi PDA, wifi digital camera (ok it's crap), a wifi mp3 player, and a cellular phone with an interface an invalid could navigate, all for $399 (without rebates or other glitzy bullshit marketing promos).

Personally, I think something like that is what computers WILL be in 10 years or more. All the user ends up doing is docking it. If that's the case, you know Apple will be getting props with it's "antique iPhone", deserved or not. They're like Blizzard of the hardware world. They take obvious fucking ideas, cutting edge technology, and sell it in a form that anyone from nerd to grandma loves. Apple isn't perfect but at least they try (and this is only their first stab at it).

FWIW, I'm not even an Apple fanboi. I bought my first iPod last March (when my 512 flash one died and I only bought an iPod because of how familiar I was with the interface) and haven't touched their PC's outside a retail store at all this year. I'd say the iPhone is far more useful for more than a few people. The gPhone demos don't really do anything that the iPhone doesn't. Only time will tell.

Sadly the only response I seem to get is "Realize it's fucked and move on." The root of the problem isn't the politicians. It's the people. We've been pandered too and now people are realizing how shitty it is and are clueless about what to do, so we ignore it.

It's not average Joe Wal*Mart shopper either. It's the poor, the middle class and above. It's everywhere. From the college grads down to the guy pumping gas. When it comes down to it, we're putting our immediate desires for whatever level of comfort we feel we've earned ahead of our long term social success. We let our kids be sold short on their education, we let our local police act like stormtroopers, we've replaced true social responsibility with feel good Political Correctness. As long as someone isn't called a bad name, then we're aces! The expectation to conform is stronger now than it ever was.

It's the people that are letting this happen. It's sad not enough realize (even if enough do, they do little about it (myself included)) that history has shown ignoring this shit only makes it worse.

All shoving them in a cell does it screw them up and cost more money than it's worth (as far as actually deterring people from cracking systems). Putting violent people behind bars at least reduces their potential to inflict damage on the real world, which could be seen as a social benefit. I'm not so sure the same benefit exists for crackers. i rotate on call shift with the other IT guys. granted i won't goto a movie or something that would be boned by the intrusion, but i won't stop myself from going to a nice restaurant because of it and expect that i'll be reachable.

if this were a story about DRM everyone would be crying that the MAFIAA is "screwing over the responsible ones because of the bad acts of the few". if i'm on my phone at the store, i get off before standing in line, don't do it at the bank, don't do it at movies, if i'm at a restaurant i'll quickly goto a better place and call back.

there was another poster who got it right, establishments need to make it known to patrons if they allow phone use and enforce it. not pull some underhanded sneaky bullshit. that will piss customers off more.
