I am gonna have to call bullshit here.

A recent example: In order to get the newest Electric Sheep screensaver to work with the newest Ubuntu I had to forcibly update about 6 different dependencies (a couple of which were dependencies of a dependency) which took 2 hours. I'm not a Linux expert, but by reading and being able to understand what I was reading, it got done and I could probably do it much more quickly next time.

Since ES is such a cool screensaver, I put it on my Windows install (you know that one we keep for games. I read the articles in Playboy too.) I simply download the executable, run it, less than 5 mins, viola. And no corrupt registry and nearly no fear of breaking my system (anything's possible).

I haven't had any problems with their "brittle" registry using Win2k or XP

Typical home users aren't going to want to hear "To install this you have to download, configure and install package A thru F just to be up to date for the software you really want to run. But be careful, cuz one of those packages could F your shit up good."

I know people that can hardly grasp the concept of "double click to install". Whether they should be using a PC is for a diff. debate.

Apple has them both beat in terms of useability, but in many ways Windows can easily make Linux look like the guy who is still only an assistant manager at a Dairy Queen after 7 years.

From what I heard, the reason they added it in the 70's was because DC couldn't trademark just the bat. This didn't sit well with Alex Ross when he was working on a Bat project (his words from an old Wizard interview I believe), so he left it off and over time the regular monthly comics dropped it. It was, however, left out in a few other key releases, namely the latter half of "The Dark Knight Returns" series.

And as a grown adult it's up to you to censor your own life.

Requiring licensing for booze is pretty universal. The difference between how that works and how mandating ISPs creating filtering software is that usually a liqour store is a single entity inside that one state. I don't know of many national chain liqour stores, do you?

This is more akin to telling a company based on the east coast that a west coast state is requiring them to abide by certain rules based upon the customs of that western state.

Secondly, verifying a persons age in order for them to buy liqour at a physical location is far more economical than requiring a national ISP to spend alot of time and manpower on software for one state out of 50.

But think about it for a second, what's the easiest way for parents to make sure their kids aren't surfing nudey sites? The parent actually goes into the room where the kid is surfing and checks or requiring ISPs all over the country (I would imagine Earthlink and AOL have some customers in Utah) to create the software you mention and educate all their Utah suscribers?

And the argument that "But I can be sure it will be blocked at the neighbor kids house too!" doesn't work here unless you know that kids parents installed the software as well. Useful tip, your kids are gonna see some boobies if they REALLY want to. Either online or by stuffing a Playboy under their mattress.

Even then, they live like bachelor slobs in Condos, not even a real house.

I'm not trying to defend the sloven, but measuring a person simply on the basis of whether or not they own a house is pretty narrow minded. I know a person that lives in a condo because it's close to their work and they rarely use their car which means they consume less gas. They are not, however, slobs.

I know a thousand people who drive from the burbs each day in their SUVs and even their Hondas and fill up one to two times a week just going to/fro work.

I mean holy shit, spending 4 hours a day playing video games is something a high-schooler does.

What else should they be doing each night? Watching TV? Reading /.? Going to the bar? Come on give me -- er -- *them* some options. I really don't want kids right now (I'm 25), I am over the drinkin' all the time thing, I read alot and get outside and do other "nerdy" shit, but yeah I play video/PC games a couple hours a day usually. It's not that hard to do.

Unless you spend each night volunteering at a homeless shelter and being a Big Brother, I don't know what hobbies you could be involved in that are any more altruistic. Although from the way it sounds, the homeless and troubled/needy kids might be below you.
