But flash does more work than VLC! For instance, if you right-click on your VLC window, do you get an "About Adobe Flash Player XX..." option? Didn't think so. You'd be surprised how many CPU cycles that little bugger eats up.
Are other institutions facing the same price hike, or is this targeted specifically at the UC system (which has so much money to burn...)? I'm assuming the UC's aren't the only schools to license NPG journals.
Or Americans, since any (Real) American should be able to tell you that a 12-gauge shotgun is bigger than a 20-gauge shotgun. Point being, we use units which are inverse of intuitive, and don't seem to have a problem with them.
I say this as an American who thinks the gauge system is weird, the mileage system only slightly less weird, and guns rather silly...
Just posting with that title so that all others will be modded redundant. True, it makes this offtopic, but that's a price I'm willing to pay to keep the memes at bay...
You can run other swfs by download the page source, js/smokescreen.0.1.3-min.js and said flash file. Assuming you're running a web server (this is Slashdot...everyone runs Apache, right?), just change
var url = 'swf/sbemail45.swf'
to
var url = 'AYB.swf
and point your browser to the modified page. And yes, AYB at least attempts to work...a little choppy, though.
Except that what they ("hollywood") do isn't illegal. Granted it's only not illegal because they've lobbied for it. I agree with your sentiment of course, but I'm not sure the blame should be put on those who take advantage of the copyright system -- it should be put on those that run the copyright system.
Of course, someone's now going to come along and show me that what hollywood does is, in fact, illegal, but oh well.
Furthermore, if it were truly "smelling" light, then wouldn't it be able to smell objects obscured from vision (this being a contradiction, barring pathological situations)? As the saying goes, I smell a rat...
This seems like a wonderful idea. My handheld GPS has one of these -- it can function with a backlight in the dark just fine, but turn the backlight off, take it outside, and it's a perfectly readable, color display which draws hardly any power.
Take it you didn't read TFA?
Nope.
Or just trying to be the first to jump on the Bobby Tables meme...
Yup.
...without actually understanding what it means?
It means you shouldn't name your kid with SQL in his name?
Bobby Tables strikes again.
Will finally be able to translate from ASL!
Yeah, yeah, you're probably thinking, "you insensitive clod, I'm from _____." Or making up some clever joke about age/sex/location...

If so, looks like Gary McKinnon has really, really bad timing.
I only use the Pac-Man page.
Now I have AC/DC stuck in my head. Thanks.

For the customers you have the appropriate product is in trouble indeed grateful, bon appétit do so as follows: anti-virus support, thank you.
Translation issues aside, they do 'fess up honestly:
Cause
The lack of production management, computer virus has been contaminated with the camera.

-1 Pedantic, but methane itself is odorless.
I, for one welco...ah, screw it.
...understand how arithmetic in computers differs from that in mathematics...
That's a good question. I mean, computers don't have fingers, so how exactly can they do arithmetic?
There's an app for that.
I know, I know, -1 Troll, -1 Flamebait...
Damn slashdot didn't display the original post. Apologies.
Mod this AC up. Channels through which child pornography passes are almost certainly outside the reach of simple monitoring of Google searches.
I think you forgot to check the "Post Anonymously" button...
Actually...you probably were expecting this!

News: Pedestrian Follows Google Map, Gets Run Over, Sues
To self: Ah, probably one of my fellow Americans being stupid.
The Toronto Star reports...
Holy cow, the Canucks are as dumb as us?
...that a Utah woman is suing Google...
I see. Carry on.
but it got rejected.

ifconfig eth0 | grep bytes # probably not as accurate, especially if there's any LAN-only traffic on the interface...
