We have a president who was elected under questionable circumstances, an illegal war in Iraq, terrorists hiding all over our country, a dollar whose value is in freefall, an education system crippled by so-called "affirmative" action, and all you people can talk about is some guy with a flight simulator ?
Jesus Christ, for God's sake you people need to GET SOME PRIORITIES!!!
Very interesting. I am a nominally white English guy, but I tan very easily and do not look particularly "American". When I was in Miami, nearly everyone I met would attempt to speak to me in Spanish. It was a bit unnerving, like I had changed races and nobody told me, like some sort of wierd dream.
However, I experienced little "racism" of this kind. Perhaps thats because I was driving a rented Ferrari F355 F1. But then again, perhaps I fitted a different "profile", i.e. someone who has "connections"! LOL.
Point is, its very rarely about race per-se, and very often about power/money.
It means that until now noone has had the guts to risk a legal confrontation to free themselves from the requirements the GPL imposes
That would be one interpretation. Another interpretation would be that since it carries no legal weight whatsoever, why waste money on lawyers to find out what we already know, i.e. that the GPL in its current form is UNENFORCABLE.
The GPL has no real valid legal meaning until it has been tested in a court of law. I think the fact that no GPL violation case has ever made it into a courtroom speaks volumes!
I see comments where posters win arguments by virtue of their low "uid". My uid is around the 170000 area, is this sufficiently low to win an argument ? As more users join this site, will my uid gain more credibility ? I am keen to find out.
Whether it be an exclusive premium luxury vehicle such as a BMW or a Mercedes, or a fine Champagne, such as a Dom Perignon, there is always someone prepared to pay for quality. I find it rather amusing that we Americans are so value concious. In Europe they think nothing of paying a premium for good design. Why is there such an objection to good design in the USA ?
Then I will go back to paying cash. Seriously though, without the backing of big corporations, Linux will never achieve what Microsoft has done.
Their marketing machine drives their technical development. This is simply capitalism. Microsoft are in a very dominant position. This is unlikely to change any time soon.
Eventually Microsoft will lose the plot. All large corporations eventually do. Think about it. The stakes are very high. The barrier to entry in the OS market is steep, but not insurmountable, and the rewards are very very rich.
All it would take is for a big player (say IBM) to buy a commercial grade OS (say BeOS) add some productivity tools, and device drivers, and give it away.
Eventually everyone would migrate to the competing OS. Currently there's no incentive because the free replacement (Linux) is inferior in the very areas that the consumer cares about. Open Source will not fix this problem any time soon.
I cannot understand why everyone gets so enflamed about a stupid browser.
We have explorer, why do the Linux hackers spend time duplicating everything ? Its a waste of resources they should concentrate on improving Linux (like adding.NET support for example) instead of simply replication something that is already available from Microsoft for free.
Oh I forgot. Micro$oft is the devil and its n0t k3\/\/1 or 1337 to use their software. Even if 70% of slashdots' readership are hypocritical IE users.
Will it be open source or free software or is this just another piece of commercial software trying to get a free ride on the back of the Linux revolution ?
Will there be a FreeBSD version ? Will it work in compatibility mode ?
Does linux support the popular flight controller joysticks like the thrustmaster flight pro III that are essential for serious flight simulation ?
Finally, isn't it a bit irresponsible to go releasing this flight simulation program for free on a free OS platform after the events of September 11th ? Shouldn't we be making it more difficult to learn how to fly, not easier ?
Why don't Hemos and Commander Taco simply delete this post ? It adds little to the discussion, it is obscene in 186 countries, and it insults the readers and the owners of this site.
The Controversial website adequacy.org has a strict "no trolling" policy, where the editors simply delete posts which do not add to the discussion. Why don't slashdot implement this ? Otherwise we will be forced to read obscene bullshit like the post I am replying to.
Come on, doesn't this prove that moderation doesn't work ? Surely this post cannot be allowed to stand. Come on, Taco & Hemos - delete it. You know it makes sense. Don't let the crapflooders have their fun. I can tell you they WILL go away once you take away their toy.
Failing that, at least IP ban the offender permanently.
How many applications out there run on this platform ? And why on earth didn't they install a Microsoft OS ? Microsoft has made leaps and bounds in scalability recently.
After all, who needs anonymity ? Only those with something to hide, such as criminals, hackers and terrorists will be affected. Surely the CIA and FBI are not interested in us 'normal' folks ?
Thanks for pointing it out. The problem was I tried to remember it from the top of my head (which was up my ass at the time). its a fucking JPG not a gif !!! OOOps
I know I just fed a troll, but I couldn't just not respond to this fool.
And thus you pepetuate the very thing you are against. If people stop responding to trolls, the trolls will give up.
What's hard for me to understand is how any retaliation would work. There are a billion or so muslims in the world. Its impractical and ethically wrong to kill them all.
And although everyone says its Bin laden, how do we know for sure it wasn't one of those lunatic militias from the USA ?
That is an interesting proposition. To destroy the kaaba would send a very strong message to Muslims, since a pilgramage there (a hajj) is one prerequisite of their religion (the so called pillars of Islam)
Nuking the kaaba would prove that their God does not exist, or at the very least, if he does exist that does not approve of the way the Ummah (Muslim supra nation) has been carrying on lately.
It is unlikely that the USA will do this officially (it would upset too many people), but it is possible that a rouge US terrorist might take it upon themselves to do it.
It is much more of a gray area than that. In much the same way as New York Irish-Americans funded IRA terrorism against civillian targets in London, Muslims around the world fund the antics of Bin-Ladin and his fellow travellers.
To suggest that these actions are not supported by a large number of Muslims is disingenious. A lot of non-terrorist Muslims do think that America is a Kaffir nation and the Great Satan.
And, as the IRA have proved in Ireland, unfortunately terrorism works.
There is a certain amount of violent imagery in the koran which is difficult to reconcile with the claim that Islam is a peaceful religion.
48: 13. And if any believe not in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared, for those who reject Allah, a Blazing Fire!
And so on and so on. Its not to say that the Bible isn't just as bad. If anything these terrorist acts are a very good reason to be atheist.

Are we really so keen on our beige boxes ?
I disagree. The API is needlessly complex. And don't get me started on "message maps" what a useless piece of crap.

I am surprised that Jon is not familiar with the site. I think he would enjoy it, it is definately his style...

Its also impossible to troll there, so you get a better signal/noise ratio than here at slashdot.
Meanwhile, with geekazoid out of action, where else is there ? Not Kuro5Wank surely ?
Refuse to pay the Gates tax.
Could this be because slashdot has been taken over by a bunch of F***ING A**HOLE WAN**R S**THEAD CENSORS ?
Yes, I think it could.
Thank you

Minor correction:
I believe what you meant to say was Remove your small shit encrusted head from your ass first, anonymous shitbag.
Link it properly, or don't bother.
There is a well known HOWTO on this very subject.
Although, it has to be said that these days a 'Troll' moderation is simply a sign that you went against the slashdot 'groupthink'.
You might want to try another site adequacy.org which welcomes trolls of all kinds with open arms
Squeak is probably the most comprehensive internet-aware Object Oriented development system currently freely available.
The best part is, it uses Smalltalk - the best OO language ever designed.
And thus you pepetuate the very thing you are against. If people stop responding to trolls, the trolls will give up.

It looks like the crusades all over again.

Are you really so jaded by life that everything no matter how horrific must be treated as a joke ?
You need to take a long look at yourself in the mirror and see if you like what you see.
