  6. Re:Get you're Karma on The Darker Side of Computer Recycling · · Score: 2, Informative

Tech TV ran a great program on this some time ago.

    Check it out here.

A co-worker of mine has a friend in China, and it is something that he really takes seriously. He actually wrote an article in our IT newsletter a few months ago, talking about the waste that we dump into Asia. All sorts of countries are doing this. Companies are paying to dump this junk off to the cheapest landfill. It is sick. It is something that we need to take seriously. Large ships take this stuff to Asia every day.

I also read that there are start-up companies that are trying to take this stuff and dismantle it properly. Recycling this stuff, and appropriately preventing serious toxic hazards.

The first way to start is simple... Don't throw this stuff into the trash. Landfills are becoming full of this stuff. Donate working computer stuff, or try to find a suitable recycling facility. It is important to realize that this can be done with all electronics.

  7. I used to do this too... on Helping Your Ex-Employer? · · Score: 2, Insightful

You got yourself in a bad spot now... Your ex-employer is soon going to start exploiting you, calling you for everything, and won't expect to pay you, however they for some reason will try to make you feel like you "owe" it to them... Basically, you're going to start being treated like an employee that doesn't get paid. Sound fun to you?

However, if you do demand money, I can guarantee they'll *not* pay you for as long as possible, or they'll try and give you "installments", where they make the first installment, and then never give you the rest. Knowing that you're unemployed and don't really have money for a lawyer, what do they care? Want to go to the labor board? Yeah, you'll get your check for $200 in a year or two (after they don't show up to any of the hearings). I've been burned far too many times by my ex-employer, and due to it I really don't trust anybody anymore, ESPECIALLY employers. Is this a bad thing though? No, I consider it me protecting myself.

How do you feel about the lack of rights that smokers now have? That a company reserved the right to not hire someone because they are a smoker. How about Christian companies that will only hire Christians? I've seen plenty of these, and as far as I've been told, it's perfectly legal. If we're going to have discrimination laws, we're going to have to make them not be able to discriminate against ANYTHING. The way you dress, smell, perform, or anything. I mean, why not?

What about those of us who encode at higher bitrates, like 160, 192 and 256+? Sound pretty damn close to a CD to me. Good enough that well... I might not feel a need to buy the album. Usually that's only the case if I probably was never going to buy it in the first place, and I do often buy albums I've heard from mp3 first, but that's primarily because I collect CD's, and would have bought it anyway. What they're worried about here isn't a bunch of kids downloading full high quality albums because well.. People doing this probably won't buy the albums, and they know this. I think what they're worried about is casual users - That 40 something mom downloading the random Michael Bolton song, a Smoky Robinson song, and then maybe a few Paula Abdul's or whatever. Well, that's about $50 they lost... Well, in their heads at least. The truth in the matter is that mom probably wouldn't have ever bought those in the first place, cause mom doesn't really give 2 shits about music, or CD's.

I see their side, but their side is retarded. Then again, most business people (especially CEO's) are fucking idiots. They're no different.
