  2. ICANN was supposed to introduce competition! on VeriSign Buys .tv · · Score: 1

How has ICANN created any new competition in the namespace? VeriSign owns Network Solutions, Register.com, Registrars.com, GreatDomains, is a part of Afilias, and they now own .tv. By introducing new Top Level Domains (TLD's) how has ICANN produced any NEW competition?

Same old root, same old monopoly -- no new competition.

If ICANN really wanted to create new competition they should have approved ALL of the new TLD applications and let them compete for market share. Image Online Design has had their application for .web in the queue for 5+ years now! If you want REAL competion you need more than different registrars (all owned by VeriSign) you need a TLD that will compete AGAINST .com. This means an ALTERNATIVE to .com .... not just a new string owned by VeriSign.

By 'rebroadcasting'... I tend to think of things like RealPlayer, or that company in Canada that was broadcasting American television shows over the Net. To me...this does not mean that they are going after the file-trading apps (yet!). At this point it almost seems like their major concern is the "public rebroadcast" of their movies and shows.

You can still fire-up KaZaa and download DivX movies by the truckload. You just can't rebroadcast them on the Web using a streaming server/client!

So, while you're bitching about a 700 dollar PCMCIA sound card.... you're looking at high-end rugged, special-use computers. Um.... call me a dumbass, but if you can't afford a sound card what makes you think you're going to buy a Lunchboxcomputer?

Previously this kind of behaviour would have gotten their case dismissed from court quicker than you can say "keygen".

But, now that the USA Patriot act is in effect all this stuff in now admissible in court. Look out! First it's going to be blatent shit like Warez groups. Then, they'll start going for movie and MP3 traders. Maybe someday they'll try to stamp out free software.

Who knows... maybe the grand finale will be that in the future everyone who uses a computer has to have a license. Then, they can run around and arrest people who operate "unlicenced computers".

S Ssf RCscmprl zOg hr Srth Srinhj Adijr

You ever sat down and started typing away furiously on your keyboard only to look up a few seconds later and find that your fingers had shifted to the left by a key?

I just don't see this as being practical.

Now... if you combine this with some VR display (like the computers in "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within") that displays a 'virtual keyboard' underneath your fingers --- maybe it could work.
