Obviously, when you're a monopoly and you want people to believe in your company you're going to say, "We know all of our shortcomings and our only goal is fixing them".
However, if you're the _underdog_, you're NOT going to put the focus on your flaws. But, if you're the only bully on the block and everyone hates you for it, you're going to play the symphathy role: "My parents beat me into beating you".
Yeah right.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
1) generate a PGP hash of 2048 bits or some other unhackable / unique bytes
2) print it out as a unique identifier on the vote receipt
3) [ someone help me out here ] - obfuscate the difference between the two so that the receipt can't be used to determine how you voted
4) "WE THE PEOPLE" PROFIT! From a clear, clean, auditable, [virtually] indisputable election process.
Ok, so it may be a pipe dream right now; but something HAS to make sure that accountability is accounted for (hah!) in higher politics [in the USA and other similar democratic-republics].
Uhm, after posting his [unobscured] email address on the Slashdot Frontpage, I tend to think that we might want to find the guy a new email addy first...
I'm switching because I'm tired of working at a thankless job, being paid insufficiently, being expected to be available 24 hours a day, and living in constant fear that my job will be sent to Asia.
My experience has proven the same, but I figured I'd give the poster the benefit of the doubt in hopes that I could expand upon/tie into the Goldmine software that we've already sunken cost into (version 5.x). We've decided _not_ to upgrade to the latest version of the software because we can't integrate with it easily and it's not cross-plaform. None-the-less, I figured I'd query for more info until we complete our transition to the replacement in the hopes that we can easily export our data...
(Note: I'm burning Moderator access to this story to post this.)
We use goldmine where I work. I've found it to be pretty proprietary (and expensive). Do you have any scripts/code or other info that could help us integrate w/ it? I didn't know that the DB was db3; so I'll have to look into that some more. Short of putting the DB on a linux PDC, I haven't been able to do anything useful integration wise. If you have any tips that are NON-PLATFORM (ie Windows) specific, I'd really appreciate a follow-up comment (as I'm sure many other's would).
Also, I'm not quite sure how you'd use it as a Helpdesk/General request system. It seems to be pretty feature locked/specific.
Won't happen. How many motherboards are manufactured in the US? I actually can't think of one off the top of my head, except for USsomething... err, nevermind. Anyway, with China, et al. realizing the world economy and the fact that reliance on the US isn't in their best interest, there will ALWAYS be a world market for flashable/modifiable/non-DRM enabled mainboards/cpu's.
I pray to god that I'm right about this. Because if I'm not, god help us all.
For example, I run linux in my car and this will make a huge impact on how long I have to sit without tunes.
Some of the things that I've done to expedite the boot process is: -build a kernel that's modular -load audio module, start playing a tune -start X -move 90% of my boot scripts into my.bash_profile -load remaining modules from the.bash_profile
In this way, I'm presented with audio and the interface right away. The non-essential things like gpsd, kismet, etc. get loaded _after_ the initial UI is presented to the user.
The only issue I have with "grammar nazi's" is that grammar, much like computer security, isn't a fixed result - it's an evolving entity. As such, you guys should lighten up. Grammar changes. With the advent of the internet, you can expect an even more rapid "turn over" of language (all languages for that matter) as the "hip" language becomes more readily accepted as normal speech/words. If you need an example, go to dictionary.com and punch in some 'slang that you hear in today's rap songs (or find on the web in 'blogs).
Odds are taht you'll fnid taht these days ain't actually _IS_ a wrod.
So basically as inflation continues to raise prices in general, the Sherman act will continue to become more and more irrelevant.
Shouldn't we[Americans] do something about this NOW, before our country/the world becomes mega-corporation-ville? I'm thinking percentage rather than fixed dollar amount.
Afterall, it's all about mergers and acquisitions in the business world.
Because the "RIAA" isn't a WE in the true sense. It's a bunch of I's posing as a "we". Each I in this case (Sony, Universal, et al) has/have their own interests in how they think, "digial music" should be licensed to the end user; and many are persuing it independently. The RIAA is simply a hedge fund for these companies. It's a tiny peice of their respective corporate pies. However, these peices have added up to a significantly well financed monster. It starts with our basic civil liberties and consumer rights. Once those are gone, we're done (the world economy as a whole; not just the US).
I can't help but think that if society wishes to continue in it's current form, a MAJOR socioeconomic revolution will inevitably have to happen.
[to my Fellow Americans] Do you remember that stupid sign in your school history classroom: "Those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it."?
It doesn't seem to sound so stupid these days does it? If you haven't seen "1984" - WATCH IT, and be VERY AFRAID.
We'll be arriving at the boiling point any time now folks. Either sit back and enjoy the ride, or stand up and make your feelings known (regardless of your stance).
Sorry for the rant, but I find myself more pissed off and scared to death everyday.
Where does he find time to do all that geek stuff and STILL manage to have time to put the entire contents of his minivan including:
* Small Broom/Dustpan (I probably should get a carvac)
* Febreze Spray
* Downy Wrinkle Remover
* Glade Neutra-Aire (five people, two days, 90 degrees, do the math).
on the web?
Maybe they shoulda just kept this story until April 1...
When saving/creating a file, I've put myself in the habit of using as many keywords in the filename as are relevant to the file. So for example, when I save a chat session that a friend and I had I name the file along the lines of: chat_w_friendname_re_cars_boating_SCO_sucks_d inner.txt
Then, a simple "locate" command just helps me find the files I need.
In this way, I don't have to worry about where I put the files necessarily; just that I use a consistent keywording system.
I've decided to redirect all web visitors from the sco.com domain to some arbitrary porn website.
Hopefully, this will prevent them from finding my online linux business/website and targeting me with an invoice. If EVERYONE did the same, or something similar we could really put a world of hurt on sco's internet domain.
Well, the investors that are still in SCO are the ones that are probably on crack. They need to get with the rest of the world and short SCO stock before they lose their arses...
Then they can buy back their proceeds and go buy some crack.
(note: shorting a stock is selling it before you buy it - its a way to make money when a stock tanks)
They might have a trump card in their back pocket that we won't find out about until it goes to court. I highly doubt that SCO's attorneys are stupid (errr , that's a conclusion I'll leave to the reader). They're probably intentionally leaking certain things and visibly disclosing others to leverage their little lawsuit.
However, based on the information that we have thus far, I tend to think that SCO's claims are baseless.
So is this what happened to Midori? It offered a tremendous amount of promise, but it just never got updated (circa 2001) - egh! Does anyone know of a Midori equivalent that's actually recent (and not LFS)?
It looks like Midori shut their mouth for one reason or another after Transmeta took over.
It would be trivial to modify the robots.txt file or even set your webserver to redirect microsoft "bots" (assuming they come from that domain or similar) or provide them with bogus pages (redirect them to a friends webpage with completely unrelated content). The result would be a major pain in the ass for their algorithm. Plus it would only work on a grand scale (many people doing it).
Granted, you may lose some ranking with _their_ search engine, but why would you want to be indexed on that crummy engine anyway? The way I see it, if a luser from msn.com can't find my content, I don't need them.
Now, if I were a corporate entity, it would be different.
So this is an easy way to trump the competition by doing the whole bigger-number-pissing-match thing.
I would've thought it was because Judge Nepolitano is a spitting image of the Chief Wigam on the Simpsons.

I'm a geek and I love FSU Seminole football. Of course, I partially attribute it to the brainwashing that took place during orientation.

I'm thinking that an ultra high velocity explosion (in a contained environment) could create a very POWERFUL replacement for the combustion engine.
Neat possibilites.

I bet the government of Munich won't experience this problem with their excellent approach to linux migration (VMware).
Then the user would construct the proper command line to run the program and WHAM! Just like that, his system is infected.
You mean the idiot users environment is infected. Most linux users know that running as the root user is a MAJOR GAPING SECURITY HOLE.
In your example, that user might have a problem (maybe lose files, or whatever), but the system would not be infected as you claim.
