1. A company who is willing to discuss or negotiate a major component of their biggest annual release (not to mention, a revenue-protection feature I'm certain their Board was quite happy about) with consumers is not likely to ban and punish all those who try to discuss it openly on their forums. They have already shown unwillingness to hear 'the other side' of the argument; hence, ~800 people chose the nuclear option to have their opinions heard and publicly vetted.
2. This is the democratization of commerce in the digital age. It's no different than standing outside of EB waving signs, or trying to get a letter printed in the newspaper. Unless people are lying or misleading in the Amazon posts, which doesn't appear to be the case, they truly and honestly deserve to give the software, in its entirety, all the way from the color of the box to the install process to the background music, as many stars as they see fit. Sure, it blows up Amazon's rating system, but they allow people to rate products without having a linked purchase. Back to my point, they aren't lying: they are trying to reflect the reality, from their perspective, of their opinion of the product.
EA knows damn well DRM isn't popular; they also know that their demographic are a bunch of tech-savvy folks who aren't likely to take it well when something they would like to drop their money on has arrived at the store with reduced functionality, and their primary method of discussion has been eliminated (i.e., shutting down DRM threads on the EA forums). IMHO, they asked for it.
Not necessarily...living in Vegas, you see a lot of these types of deals going down sometimes only weeks before they are on the ground, sometimes big, multi-million dollar deals like Bette Midler and Cher and Michael Jackson, not to mention the ultra-lounges that pop up and down here like whack-a-mole (see this weeks announcement of Jay-Z's club at the Palazzo closing that hasn't even been open 9 months...that's typical Vegas). That's the result of the kind of sick money these places have. They've known about this shutdown for a few months now and have been discussing in the local paper; the Michael Jackson rumor has been bouncing around town for a couple of years now since he moved his family here, so every time a big space or a theater opens up (Celine Dion theater at Ceasar's, Spamalot theater at the Wynn, etc) everyone thinks he's going to move in. The Hilton said quite a while ago they don't know for sure, but the space will likely go back to being slot floor.
Jack Nicholson won't be around to kill your parents for much longer. Being a brooding, dark-hearted, multi-billionaire superhero would be much harder if your mom called you every Sunday afternoon to chat.
very true...it irritates me when people grandstand "well I ride a bike everywhere...what's your excuse". Well, I live in Las Vegas, the North American capitol for pedestrian fatalities. Cars here aren't just transportation: they are armor.
Example: a clip from today's newspaper about a proposed bike path. The "bicylists' advocate" does come off as a bit arrogant, but note the driver's responses in the comment area below. Many are advocating outright violence against bikes because they get in the way.

If you dig deep enough in the wikileak chain, I think they originally said something about "ball-gag the intern", but you know how the intertubes twist everything all up...
how inaccurate can they be? Well, given that Google had "misplaced" Tibet and found a section of the Himilayas had moved several hundred miles, it depends on your definition of accuracy vs. the PRC's definition, I suppose.

Concur...I use Dreamweaver to come up with my static content and site layout, but then I break the html file apart into objects to be called by PHP, all manually coded and maintained. Dreamweaver is as bad as Frontpage at mangling what should be simple tasks; it can't even be trusted with style sheets.
My first thought was "30 Rock"...that's basically a shill for NBC and SNL, but IMHO a very decent sit-com. It's not just self-depracating, but they do actually mention GEs other ventures on the show, if only in jest; but that's the point, right? NBC can make fun of GE all they want as long as you remember that they make sitcoms AND toaster ovens. And lightbulbs. And jet engines. And financial services.
Ever been to a store that didn't take cards? Is accepting Cash Only illegal? Nope. Can I be shut down or fined if I don't accept checks for groceries? Uh uh. What if I don't want my delivery drivers to take cash for C.O.D.s? Fine...let 'em. It's not illegal. Are there online companies who don't take cards? You bet...not successful ones, to be sure, but I've seen and shopped at places with web sites that only take checks or money orders. They could mandate Flooz if they wanted to. This is only slightly different, in that your broker, essentially, is mandating the payment types you can accept.
So maybe a better analogy would be a flea market owned by Muslims...they believe debt is sin so don't allow credit cards to be used on their property. Don't like it? They'll tell you to find somewhere else to sell your fleas: Allah does not want you here. Illegal? I doubt it.
Or if you lease kiosk space in a mall: it's not unusual for mall owners to not only mandate payment types, but also that you use their card processor so they can get volume discounts. Anti-trust? Pa-shaw. It's the price you pay for working with a broker.
Thankfully, there is an RSS feed so you know in real-time if the Earth has been destroyed:

But, what if the end of the world affects my DSL? Is there an option for SMS?

I respectfully disagree on a couple of fronts:

Same here: it's my daughter's bday on the 22nd, and we just so happen to be in Disneyland that day, so we're seeing it there.
Happy b-day, btw

Flash movie? Crap...another plugin to install...
Better comic books than SNL spin-offs...

Crap, I wasted all of my mod points on some stupid Linux discussion yesterday...cryin' shame, that.
