Major offtopic reply coming up... Mods, it's just a reply to a reply I got.

Well, I said it's sad that they're willing to give sex to someone they met online for just a few minutes. And I'm not talking about poor people... the cases I saw on the news in Korea are highschool girls that have families that are from lower middle class to middle class or higher (and by 'class' I mean the wealth they'd have by distribution of income). Sorry I don't have any sources to quote. Many of these girls have money but want more. Don't get me wrong, I really disapprove of the men that initiate these things... they should get sentenced to jail or something.

The reason I think it's "sad someone's willing to give away sex" is because I don't see sex as something casual. It's not like eating, if you know what I mean. I'm not trying to mock you or anything, but have you ever heard of delayed gratification? Personally, for me, that's a big difference between animals and people. We can delay our immediate needs, animals can't. You don't follow your instincts and go anywhere and have sex with whatever you want. If I'd follow my instincts all the time I'd be sleeping, eating, having sex and not doing anything else at all. I'd be sleeping this very moment instead of replying to you.

After the sexual revolution in the 60s and all, people give the argument that we're also animals, that it's scientifically proven that we want to have sex, etc. Then let's all act like animals. But we don't, because we have a mind that has a conscience, and somehow many people think that there's a lot more to sex than just the physical part. It creates a big pain inside someone when he/she knows that his/her partner slept with someone else. Now, why would that be? Why should we feel jealous/angry/anxious at all? Why not just go around sleep with everyone and be happy all the time? When you take it seriously, sex isn't just something you do with anyone.

I might sound like a religious-abstinance nut, but hey, I'm only 21. I just feel these things are common sense that should be taught to kids before they have their sexual life begin.

  8. Re:South Korea on Comparing Internet Cafe Rates Worldwide · · Score: 3, Informative

Internet cafes in South Korea have been around for a long time and their prices vary. Prices are different because they give you different choices of service. I don't know what it's like at the moment but I lived there till 2002. Usually it would be about $.75 an hour(or 1000 won) and prices wouldn't rise because there were so many internet cafes that competition was tight. I remember in some places you could do an all-nighter for about $5 (2002), or in some other places you paid about $10 and you got 12+ hours and the employee would make you a nice bowl of ramen to enjoy while chatting.

The internet cafes became what's called a 'pc bang' or a 'game bang' ('bang' means room in korea; i.e. game room). The computers in many pc bangs have good specifications in order to stay on top of the competition. I love the concept because it is so easy to arrange a night out with your friends for fragging or leveling up than doing a lan party. If one pc bang was full you just had to cross the street and go to the next one (there where many where I lived in Seoul).

Often times members of different clans of any game (Quake, CS, Rainbow six, Diablo 2, Starcraft, you name it) arrange meetings in some pc bang and rent out a whole place to have a showdown. I attended one CS game session for a clan (not that I was that good) and it was a very friendly atmosphere and it was exciting to meet the guys (and chicks) you only knew the nicknames of on CS. But that's another story.

Unfortunately, the pc bang can be used and is being used for grownups who chat with young highschool girls and 'pick' them up. I think it's terrible that there are people taking advantage of younger girls and luring them with money. It's sad to me that someone's willing to give away sex to some guy they meet for a few minutes online. But that's a moral story.

Anyways, the pc bang is truly a place of social interaction or a place where you can be left alone to do your own thing. I hope this gave some insight.

And, once you're in college, for G's sake, gain all the abilities you can. It's all about using your time wisely. You may be 'bright', but if you get bored with something in a few weeks and you don't finish it, does it mean you're wise? It means you just can't deal with life. Those who can't deal with life (not wise, impatient, gay, whatever reason) just sit around and bitch about it. Life is supposed to be happy. So even if you're doing something you don't like, the smart (though not easy) thing to do is to make it fun. Sounds like a freaking teacher or something. But, at least it works for me (Nietzsche would wanna kill me with his slave morality shit theory; don't believe that crap).

The world is not fair and that's how it is. Now, you can deal with it the smart way or the rebellious way. The smart way is, well, the smart way. It may not always work, but there's a bigger chance of succeeding. Some people think it's stupid 'cus it looks like you're sucking up to people and just following. But before you listen to their bitching, ask them what do they suggest you do. Ask them to give you a concrete 5-year-plan of something for you to do the next half decade. If they provide you with a plan; check it out, and think about it and if you like it, do it. But if they can't give you a 5 year plan, then it's deja moo (feeling you heard this bullshit before). You have to think pragmatically. For example, think 'What works?' Arguing and being a jerk? Or submitting and being nice to my boss / teacher / whatever-authority-figure? Do what works. The boss will have work for you for the next 5 years, it may be boring, but it's work that will pay you. You can work and that will be your foundation to find a better job. You have to start somewhere. See what I mean?

I don't have any sources, this is just what I think. It's up to you, but I think the best thing is to invest in gaining new abilities... and believe it or not, you can do that in college.

I'd say the best education for a kid would be that which prepares him/her for the future. I'd prefer to see them poor and happy than filthy rich and with enough trauma for not having had a NORMAL CHILDHOOD.

The elder generation of Korea went through real 'poverty'. I'm not talking the kind of poverty you see in the US... I'm talking of scrape-the-bark-of-trees-for-food poor. They learned from history that they do not want to be poor and they don't want their kids to be poor either. They learned that their country doesn't have natural resources to rely on and the only resource they have is/are(?) people. So, to stand as a nation they have to educate their people. Why do they study so much? Well, they have to study hard because there's so many people in a small country that it's hard to get a job even with a college degree.

But, what you say may be true indeed. Many people lose their childhoods just studying and going to academic institutions. Yet, I ask you, who defines a 'normal' childhood anyway?

There's a saying... "What was hard to endure is sweet to recall." And, although I made it seem like hell on earth, school life is not really that bad/intolerable. Being in school all day doesn't mean studying 24hrs a day. I can remember many fun moments with my friends... like the thrill of escaping out of class at 6pm, laughing our heads off at jokes done by our teachers, getting caught and hit for cheating with my friends, gambling in class till the teachers came, etc. One time, a friend of mine got hit so hard he couldn't take anymore blows. Guess what happened? A friend of his got up and volunteered to get hit the rest of the blows... now, you tell me how many people would do that? That's something you'd only see in movies. The emotions you go through in school are really astounding sometimes. Of course, it's up to each person to interpret a situation with a positive or a negative heart.

I'll just make one more point. The bonding between schoolmates in Korea is actually quite amazing. Some people mistake the Koreans and put homosexual attributions to their relationships (men and women), because they seem to be so close to each other. But in reality, there is no sexual attraction. It has nothing to do with some perverted sexual intention. If girls hold hands, it's just because they're good friends. If a guy massages another's neck it's because the other guy was tired.

It's just that all the hardships they went through together can make them very good friends. Maybe I'm getting sort of defensive here... I hope you don't think I'm trying to say they're better or something.

I say that's BS. I went to high school in the 70s; it was incredibly lax.

I went to one of the top engineering universities in the US and graduated in the top 1%. There were plenty of others like me there who did well despite not having been subjected to a fascist K-12 regime.

I want to applaud you for your creativity and your development of skills even when put in a lax system. But let me tell you that that's not the case for everyone. Many people in the US are losing their teenage years doing shit when they should be using the scholastic system of the state for their education and skills. I blame the lax education system of the US, extreme individualism of students, lack of respect towards teachers, lack of understanding of the importance of education from the parents' part, and (this one is personal) the people that argue all the time with the teacher (I say STFU and learn, then talk).

For example, the math they teach in Korean highscools surpasses that which is taught in US highschools by far. The fact that there are highschool students struggling with the mathematic problems in the SATs is a sad reality. I lived in Korea for 9 years and I sucked at math (btw, I still suck at it)... I probably got some of the lowest scores in my class. Still the SAT math was very easy for me. My classmates in Korea saw the SAT's math part and couldn't believe that this was the level of math required in the US to enter college.

If you take the average GPA of a student from the US and that from one from Asia (I'm getting too general here), the US student might have a higher score. But you have to be aware that the content learned in Asian highschools is extremely advanced. The competition in their system is just mindblowing. Competition is necessary to screen who can make it to the best universities, who can make it to a university in the city(i.e. Tokyo, Seoul), and who has to go to the crappy outer universities.

I'll take the example of Korea one more time... Students go to school from 7am to 9pm during weekdays(some schools till 11pm). Many students have to go to academic institutions to study more after they get out of school at night. Many get back home after 12am to wake up 6 hours later. On Saturdays many have to stay in school till 6pm. Some schools even make students come on Sundays. Most highschools make students go to school during the vacations. It doesn't matter if it's raining, snowing, hailing(?), or even if they're in war... a student's duty is to go to school to get educated. You might think this is an exaggeration; it's not. The average number of subjects a student has to take a year is over 12. They have to excel in all their subjects to make it to a good university. I don't want to talk much of the crap they have to go through in class... but just to list a few things that happened while I went to school; teachers hit students, they can use sticks (hockey sticks, pool sticks, brooms) or simply punch you, punishments are crazy, you'll be sorry if you're a smoker and get caught smoking, no questions are asked in class, you're dead if you yawn in front of the teacher, you eat lunch in the classroom, you clean up your classroom... I could go on forever. All of this is done to 'discipline' students who 'don't know what's right'. The punishments and the hitting are slowly disappearing.

I'm not trying to say that the Korean or Asian way is better or that it is 'good'. And not everyone in the Asian schooling system turns out to be a genius. Many people simply can't endure the mental and physical whiplash imposed on them. But, I'm just trying to say that there's a whole different world out there getting their brains fried with education. So, if you want to compete in the future, you better get those kids of yours a *real* education.
