  1. That's just like your opinion...man. on Casual Play on 360 Live Arcade · · Score: 2, Insightful

Obviously both consoles have fun, short/small downloadable games for cheap prices. In the end, the article is more about personal preferences in games, than any sort of comparable quality. Especially since the 360 has an entire year head start over the Wii.

Personally, I'd rather play Super Mario world and Legend of Zelda than most of the games on Live Arcade. One of the reasons is that they're known quantities, whereas many of the Live ports have been very dubious in quality (anyone who made the mistake of getting Contra knows what I'm talking about here). Everything from Nintendo has been incredibly well emulated, with the added bonus of being able to have a "save state" that means you can pause the game, turn off the console and come back to play later. Man, I wish my NES and SNES had that years ago.

So while I'd come down on the side of the Wii in this debate, in the end it's totally personal preference on the games - just like it always is with this console debates.

  4. Convenience on Interview Looks at How and Why Wikipedia Works · · Score: 5, Insightful

Wikipedia works because it completely satisfies our need for getting information that's probably *mostly* accurate with little to no effort. 5. Mixed Signals on Duke Nukem Forever in Production · · Score: 1

The message from GeorgeB is a little confused in the interview. He talks about character models almost being done (almost?) and guns being "finished". That sure doesn't seem like things are terribly far along - you build the props for a movie before you start filming, right?

But then at the end, he mentions that they're putting together some gameplay and making sure the game feels right. In either case, it seems like a "wait and see" approach is the best way to go. After all, if it sucks after all these years, it's no skin off our noses, is it? And if it's awesome, the delays will be forgotten or labeled "worthwhile" just like Half-Life and Half-Life 2's.

Playing around in the world of Warcraft is absolutely amazing, due to the depth of story and rich world they've created. But I could never imagine buying and playing the game regularly unless they design a path or two you can take through the game to make it to the "end" without having to join up with a huge guild that schedules raids and grinds for gear.

Basically, I love multiplayer agmes and WoW is very good, but I can't stand playing a game on a schedule or organizing this massive efforts. Make some "end game" content that doesn't require a huge guild to complete, please. Some of us like company in the worlds we play in, but hate obligation.

When Firefly was still on the air, Fox played it Friday nights, about 8ish if I recall. Even though I liked the one or two episodes I caught, I missed most of the season because I was never at home Friday night to watch TV. Classic Fox - just like airing Futurama on Sundays after sports events that ALWAYS run over time. Bah.

Maybe it's just the marketing-speak, but this doesn't seem like a bugfix to me, just like the extra tracks and cars in PGR2 weren't a bugfix. This content adds all sorts of new stuff(enemies, weapons, etc), and a few enhancements to the actual gameplay (camera and gamespeed), but none of those things are bugs. At least, no more than leaving CTF out of MechAssault when it launched (and including it in a download over Live 6 months later) was a "bug".

So according to Wired's total (and their settlement estimate), the RIAA is looking at $10,500,000. That's pretty impressive for a bunch of copy-n-paste lawsuits. Any lawyers want to estimate the RIAA's legal costs for this campaign?

  11. Re:1595 on The RIAA Sues 482 More People · · Score: 2, Insightful

That's amazing. 1600 sued, out of the millions pirating. Most of those sued settled out of court. It'd be interesting to know what the settlement was, because I doubt the RIAA is getting enough from these "John Doe" pirates to cover their lawyer costs. That makes this even more of a blatant scare tactic than I originally thought. Thanks for the link.

  12. Overall total? on The RIAA Sues 482 More People · · Score: 5, Interesting

Does anyone know the number of people the RIAA has sued thus far? I'd be interested in a comparision between that number and the number of estimated pirates (the more accurate numbers, and the RIAA's numbers). I'm wondering if all of this litigation is a financially sound strategy for the RIAA.

  13. Re:Yeah me too, funny that... on Next-Gen Xbox To Lack Backwards Compatibility? · · Score: 1

The original Halo isn't actually playable via Xbox Live. So, unless you're running some sort of tunneling software (xconnect is one, I think), no one is playing the original Halo "online".

As for your point in that paragraph, I would doubt that MS would make Live an Xbox2 only service anytime soon, if ever. It should be possible to make Live work with both systems. As long as the games are different (ie, there is no backwards compatability), it'll just be like Live is now, with everyone on playing the game they like, and being able to see what their friends are playing.

What I'd realy like to know is how Live will work if the Xbox 2 IS backwards compatible. Running the same old games with new controllers and whatever other advantages/disadvantages the Xbox 2 will have over the Xbox 1 - over Live, against people still on an Xbox 1 - would be an interesting thing to see. It's not the same as someone with a newer computer playing a game versus someone with an older computer, but there might be some parallels.
