I think you hit the nail on the head here. The answer is simple, its not the government, its the parents. How can we hold the government and teachers 100% liable for the education of our children if we as parents do not get involved on a daily basis with our children's lives and education? I personally believe this lack of involvement is the catalyst for a series of other disturbing issues.

My wife is a teacher at a middle school, while lack of funding is an issue, the lack of interest displayed by a lot of parents is just down right scary. Seriously, if mommy and daddy don't care why should the child?

With a lack of involvement, and doing things such as using the TV and video games as a baby sitter, its no wonder why the test scores of kids here in the US are so poor when compared internationally.

From my observations, there are way too many kids who are extremely disrespectful to their parent, and will do anything to get there way. The parents of such kids, will do just about anything for the kids, and really just want to be their "friend". I call BS! Be a parent! If a kid mouths off to you don't hesitate to tan his hide! Now, I am not an advocate of "beating" kids, but I do support controlled and metered punishment. Spanking can and should be given when appropriate.

I better get off my soapbox now.

I used to work for a software firm that wrote software for the property and caualty insurance industry. The practice of charging price 'A' to one customer and price 'B' to another is not necessarily discriminitory. Its more of a way to get your product into the hands of users who can't necessarily afford it.

For example. The company I worked for based the price to charge a client (insurance company) on their direct written premium (DWP). A small company could have a low DWP and be charged less than a company that was larger, and whose DWP was higher than the small company. It could also be flipped around the small company could have a higher DWP than the larger one. This may be because the larger company bought a smaller one to get into the insurance market and the smaller company has a better sales force or is highly specialized. Regardless, the price was based on DWP.

So maybe one company gets charged $1000 and the other $10,000. This isn't discriminatory because its what the company could afford. Its a win-win situation. The company got some money for its software even at $1000 and we have a nice addition to our user base. The real win is that the customer is now a user of that software and not someone elses. With this particular type of software being so expensive its likely that the new customer will not change vendors in quite a few years. (A lot of deals were in the millions along with a few years of implementation)

Microsoft is attempting something similar here albeit on a smaller scale. Sure they may not get a real financial return on their software that they sold to the Kenyan school for $100 bux. But the REAL return is that the kids in the Kenyan school are learning on MICROSOFT products and will know how to use those products and not the products of a Microsoft competitor and once a person gets familiar with something, its much harder for them to change to something that does the exact samething, even if it is cheaper or just plain free.

Don't get me wrong I am not trying to defend Microsoft by any stretch, but I can see what they are doing and its nothing more than what a lot of companies currently do to get users/customers.

They are merely attempting to price products appropriately to the region in which they are selling.

This "Wasp" however, was more along the lines of the old Dick Tracy trashcan flyers. "That's Incredible" even had footage of the vehicle in flight as demonstrated by Army personel. The intent was for rapid removal of injured from the battle field and for recon...mostly recon as I remember.

The details as I recall them are that the pilot stood in this large "trash can" like thing that had room for two personel (standing/limping). It could fly at tree top level at about 60 to 70mph. It was stated that the vehicle used the jet engine from a cruise missle.

The video they showed on the show showed the vehicle lifting vertically, sliding left, right and backwards as well as cruising at treetop level very quickly.

I thought that it was the coolest thing I had seen way back then. Does anyone else happen to remember this?

Our solution was to not only limit our hours but pick specific days of the week to play and stick to them. This really has worked out well as the wives are kinda enough to leave us all alone on the designated nights and the rest of the week, we spend time with family and doing other things. Of course we keep it to only two nights a week, but we typically play from 8pm to about 11-11:30pm.

As a side benefit it also helps us from getting bored and burned out on any particular game.

I know that there may be oodles and oodles of Word and Excel docs out there and it would be nice if all applications played nice together. But if thats not going to happen then maybe its just time to move on to something else.
